#54 | 2005 Subaru Outback ECM Repair for Larry
On 2005 Subaru Outback H6 3.0R the chips responsible for injectors and ignition coils are IC603 and IC403. The replacement of those chips can resolve the issues with misfires, in this case I believe it's the engine that is responsible for misfires but the only way to confirm is to replace them.

Gen 3 H6 engines often misfire on cylinder #6 due to a cold solder joint under IC608 (CS900724). There are many suggested methods of repair (heating in the oven, soldering wire, blowing hot air) but none of them last for more than 2 weeks. This method guarantees that the misfire will not return. I enjoy watching your videos, I work on some Aluminum Silicon Nitride Hybrid Boards also very common in Industrial Automation and some Automotive, I agree 100% They are a PITA but Preheat with hot air and as large of tip as you can safely use make it simpler. I used to use Hakko FM-203 I really did not like doing Aluminum PCB's it seemed way under powered but manageable. I then changed to JBC DDE stations and the thermal transfer & recovery was amazing resulting less preheat and less hot air temps/dwell time making the repairs more reasonable. For Hot air I use a Quick TR1300A on the smaller stuff i use the Quick TR1100.

    @DIYRepairHour 4 дня назад

    I just blast these mosfets with concentrated hot air, no adding fresh solder. Like 90% air at 480c. Takes exactly 3 seconds to take them off, and that is not enough time for surrounding area to get overly hot. I bought some from China, and those were slightly different looking than the originals or the ones I get from France. Those were cheap, yes, but I decided to not trust them and they will go to some other project, that is not automotive. Because I doubt those from CHN are automotive grade.

    I have a similar setup and I block off some of the heater with a thin metal plate and there is a hole cutout in it. That hole has a stack on it (like a chimney) that sits below the area being heated. So all the heat is diverted under the socket or chip. The plate is held down with magnets.

    Hi, Can you please, explain to me shortly how to connect the amplifier to test the watt power? Thanks

    • @blackhorserepairs
      @blackhorserepairs 7 дней назад

      You need a power resistor, I use 4 Ohm 10 Watts. Then you need to measure RMS voltage on it which will tell you how much current is flowing through it. Once you calculated the current, multiply voltage by current to get the wattage. You can use online power calculators for that. Remember that the lower the frequency of the sin wave, the more power will dissipate on the resistor. Make sure the amp is designed to work with 4 Ohm load, some require 8 Ohms, some can go up to 2 Ohms.

    • @jacklamata2544

      @@jacklamata2544 it says 4 to 8 because that's the range you can use on this amp. That means you cannot connect 2 Ohm speakers to it without risking damage. You can perform measurements with 4 Ohm resistor. If you want to connect 8 ohms, just use 2 resistors in series, it doesn't have to be one resistor as long as the total resistance adds up.

    Hi, how you test if accidentally power gets into data lines or control lines of the CPU

    • @blackhorserepairs
      @blackhorserepairs 10 дней назад

      interesting question. The power that is delivered to CPU is in the range of 1V, there would be no damage to the CPU if that rail goes to data lines. The damage will occur if the 12V is supplied to CPU either power or data lines, which is the case if high transistor shorts out. If, on the other hand, the pins short the VCORE to any data line, there should be no damage to the CPU. If your CPU is not shorted and still doesn't work (data lines issue) it is likely the issue with the board or compatibility issue. Test it on multiple boards before concluding the CPU is faulty.

    here is a question. without a kcup in the holder, the flow is good. when I put a kcup and run a cup of coffee, it is no to low flow or even just a few dribbles. is it the check valve on the top or the pump that has gone bad. or am I way off.

    • @blackhorserepairs
      @blackhorserepairs 11 дней назад

      without a kcup there is no pressure working against the flow. When the kcup is inserted the pump must create a pressure to brew the coffee properly. If there is no flow, I would expect that the pump is faulty or there is low power. It might be a faulty seal on the pump or worn gears. Take the cover off and supply the pump with 12V while blocking the flow to test compression. If there is no compression, replace the pump. If the compression seems fine we likely have power issue. I would not expect the valve to be faulty but it's also possible.

    I would remove the damaged chip because that can be the easily the short. If the short is gone, then supply 3V from the bench and then you should be able to see if the rest survived. When the transistor to 12V goes it will take the one to ground with it. If it is a full short there will be no heat.

    • @blackhorserepairs

    Hi Raff do capacitors have a shelf life? I mean do they ever dry out when new?

    • @blackhorserepairs
      @blackhorserepairs 12 дней назад

      polymer and electrolytic capacitors do have a maximum number of cycles and some shelf life as well. That's why it's a common fault on power supplies. Other than capacitance, they also have ESR which in some cases is very important. Both these attributes can cause the capacitor to malfunction. It is possible to acquire a new, never used, capacitor which is dry. In some cases the cap has been stored improperly and for too long, in other cases it's the physical damage or manufacturing/QC fault. It is rather rare though.

    A good indicator to see if the socket was soldered properly you can check the data lines off the DDR chanels and also off the PCIE. I am sure you are familiar with the cheap testers, that are available from aliexpress, but hey work quiet fine!

    You must do a very careful visual inspection around the CPU socket and on the back side of it for missing components (caps, resistors) or shorted ones. I do have very often such cases of knocked out components or others that were hit with screwdrivers and got shorted. Especially after the socket replacement and the high temperatures exposed for half an hour, a visual inspection is a must. Good job with the socket though.

    • @blackhorserepairs
      @blackhorserepairs 14 дней назад

      it's a lot more than 30 minutes of high temperature exposure, first I have to remove the socket so that's 30 minutes there, then clean the pads so sometimes 45 minutes of high heat and corrosive flux, then half an hour for replacement. So yeah, there's a lot of stuff that can go wrong, it's hot and the room becomes uninhabitable for at least an hour after the job is done. Considering those conditions I can well believe some technicians drop the socket or a screwdriver on the board. That's the whole reason I'm doing it in the first place, it's just plainly hard and time consuming. Challenging to do right and without any damage.

      @@blackhorserepairs I was talking for the no CPU core condition. It could be as simple as a missing resistor or a shorted cap. I do often have accidents, especially with crowded bench or small space.

    Even professional services with expensive IR BGA rework stations refuse this type of service. Large PCBs are very prone to bending or warping. But good luck, practice makes perfect

      mileage will not change but you need to program it to your VIN. What are the issues with your original ECM?

      @blackhorserepairs 16 дней назад

      @@Doug_Hefernen sure thing Doug, as a general question yes, in most cases you need the VIN and mileage to program the ECM, in case of ECMs I work on it's just VIN. In case of BCM I would not expect it to be VIN locked but it probably depends on the car (I'm sure Merc won't let you just replace it). Generally don't go by the car year/model, just use the part number instead, those parts can span across 3-5 years

    For this kind of work I use special repair pads. Those come in different shapes and sizes on a copper sheet. I found wire to be too thick for some jobs, those pads are more 2D than 3D, as the original traces and pads are. Also makes the work easier, faster and looking overall better. And cost is minimal :) You mentioned it I think later on in the vid, but I do have pads that are even smaller than those (0.2mm). Bought on Ali I think.

      they are hard to use but soooo good for this stuff, also, if tolerances are so tight, might help to use a thinner conformal coating imho.
