How do I edit using the smart previews if I disconnected my external drive and when I try to open LRC it keeps saying the Lightroom catalog was not found (my external drive is not connected) so how do I edit my smart previews without the external drive not being connected? I’m so confused
As a new user I find this sooooooooooooo useful
That's great! I'm glad it helped in some way!
How do you decide on which format will work well with a shot? Sometimes I just don't know if 9:16, 3:4 or sth. else is the right choice :) There a times you only have that one moment for a shot and switching and trying out euch isn't possible
I feel like it just takes practice. Eventually, with enough practice, you can just sorta see a scene and know!
Definitely getting myself a couple of these for Christmas. That USB C SD reader will help so much.
Oh that’s great! They are so handy!!
Great gift ideas! I need ALL the SD cards this Christmas 😂
Same here! That, and a few storage devices would be handy!!
This is only available on iphone
Yea, I mentioned I thought it was only available for iOS, but I didn't have an android device to 100% confirm.
@@jaredcollins-photo Can confirm, that's a shame ahah
External display for smartphone camera: I found a way to connect another smartphone to my smartphone via cable and mirror the screen. This means I can control the image section in every perspective and take selfies with the main camera. Data connection between camera smartphone and display smartphone: USB-C to HDMI ... HDMI to USB-C Capture card + USB Camera app. Mechanical connection with 2 screwed and tiltable mobile phone holders. Works great.
Oh now that is cool! I’ve never thought about a display for my phone, but it would be super handy when using it to vlog
@jaredcollins-photo I had a lot of problems photographing mushrooms close to the ground, so I came up with this idea. An old Smartphone phone works best here. My pixel 8 and Samsung Galaxy from S21 can output an HDMI signal via USB C, I don't know whether that works with the iPhone.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Thanks
It's one of my favorite ways to share images online!
My apps are: TPE, PhotoPills, StarWalk2, Aurora, SmugMug & LR
Oh I gotta check a few of those out!!
Good video Jared and thanks, I've fallen down the buying presets rabbit hole back when I first started, then gave them up all together. Your video has got me thinking about them again and, as you suggest, creating my own for my workflow - though I couldn't resist a try out with your freebie preset🙂
They really are a GREAT tool when used properly. They give you consistent starting points and save a lot of time on the up front. As a professional, I use them every time I edit a set of images. The free preset is one that I love throwing on top of my iPhone images in LR Mobile. It gives them a nice punch and elevates them just a smidge!
you're not! I keep them for resale in the future. I like to deliver anything I sell as close to looking new as possible.
ohhh the resell approach is a great thought!!
Great explanation, thank you.
There’s a million ways to organize a catalog or start culling your images, but this is the way I have found is the most helpful for me and my workflow.
Wish I’d heard this way earlier in my photography journey. You hit the nail on the head as to why it kinda falls flat when someone says it’s not the gear (when they have all the gear). Great to hear explained this way and great to see someone trying to get through to new photographers in a way that they might actually listen to
I really appreciate your input there. That's exactly what I was trying to do was show that, yes gear does matter, but with the proper knowledge and skills, you can get great results with "lesser" gear.
Never knew solo mode existed. Thank you.
Yea it doesn’t change a whole lot, but I think it sure does clean up the side panel if it only opens the tab you’re using at the time.
@@jaredcollins-photo it saves a bunch of clicks & scrolls over time. Big assist. Thank you again.
Jared -- great video, buddy! Consise and super informational. I wish more new photographers would spend more time in this LrC space. Such a wonderful tool. Like you, I don't import from the SD card, nor do I store any photos on the PC itself. I copy the shots to one of the external drives, and then "import" from there. My culling is a little different -- I start with a flag, pure and simple -- if the image makes the first cut, I flag it. From there I cull the flagged shots with stars, as you do. Couple other things I find helpful is at the time of importing it's easy to import a second copy of the images to your backup drive. Doing it at the same time helps prevent forgetting later. Another thing I stress is that when you're setting up those import requirements, it's also a great time to fill out the copyright info panel. From there, your copyright is on every image - culled keepers and originals. If you complete your copyright info you only have to do it once. From there, put a check in the box if you want your copyright used on every import. Fun fact, you can have multiple copyrights -- a personal one; a business one; etc and use them accordingly as needed. I'm glad you mentioned collections too! In the early days I didn't take full advantage so it was much more difficult to find a particular set of shots as my practice grew. Now I have collections for everything -- and -- collections within a collection. Parent collection = Models; sub collection would be each model and date photographed within the parent. Parent collection = Weddings -- sub collection would be each wedding within a calendar year, etc ...To your point about solo mode, I find using a parent-child collections strategy helps keep the left side clean too because you can collapse to the parent level. Again - thanks man, this was a great video - and serves as a reference video. I will save this and offer it to the new photographers I see regularly. All the best!
That collection organization is super well thought out! I like that methodology a lot! I know a lot of people today use AI to cull for them, but I still like doing it myself, personally
Subscribed. More Lightroom video tutorial/tips please. Thank you!
Oh I would love to! What’s something specific you’d like to see?
@@jaredcollins-photo Color Grading, please.
Okay, I can work with on getting something going there!
My question is, I'm nearly full with my cloud storage. Can I purchase more cloud storage?
I shoot professionally and I prefer as I call it the standard Lightroom not Lightroom classic. It's just simpler to operate and it's actually a lot faster workflow when you're doing a lot of editing. I just feel everything is in the right spot. I did try Lightroom classic and it just did not jail with the way my workflow and brain works but everyone is different some people swear by classic!... I never edit. I never edit photos on my phone ever
I believe you can add more cloud storage under your Creative Cloud account, but I’ve never looked at the pricing. I started in LR Classic so I prefer it in most cases but they are both very very capable programs.
For my use case, I also use both but mostly Classic. FYI there IS a Color Calibration tool in Lightroom but it first must be enabled. Click the 3-dot menu on the right and enable it in there. Once you do that it will be located within the Color tab. Cheers.
Oh gosh that’s a life changer! I love to make subtle changes there in that panel!
Here's what i've found to be true as a 5 year novice\hobby photogrpher. "Old" photgraphers and pros treat you like your slow in the head or stupid for using LightRoom, and not Classic. But people who use Lightroom have NOTHING bad to say about Classic users.
I 100% enjoy both of them and I think they each fit into my workflow uniquely. They do the same thing, but with different behaviors and methods. I’ll not shame anyone for their preferences. I just wanted to share my thoughts on the differences between the 2.
Adobe can use the cloud stored images to train its AI. It keeps trying to claim ownership of those images as well. I stay away from their cloud storage.
Yea, I know that was a hot topic a couple of months ago, but I've since seen further explanations of that clause in the fine print that maybe states it wasn't what everyone initially thought? I personally haven't read it all myself. I don't use it for any of my client work, though. So, I shouldn't be in any sort of violation of an NDA anyway.
Seriously dude if you post your photos on Facebook Facebook owns your Photos Instagram and so does every other platform where you post your photos. Everyone is using AI to generate money. Don't buy into the whole Lightroom conspiracy rubbish. Seriously come on.
I definitely enjoy the cloud aspect of Mobile LR when switching from phone to ipad to mac! It is also getting really good with certain smart features like the "depth" tool and smart masking. Overall, i like the feel of LRC better but mobile is very handy
I definitely enjoy using both! I wouldn't want to use either one of them entirely/completely, though. I've found a way to use both effectively in various scenarios
Would love to see a video on how you organize your Lightroom catalog!
What if I told you... I've already written the script for this one??
@@jaredcollins-photo NOW WE"RE TALKIN
Some good items here. All decent, but personally I can't go cheap on the hard drives & SDCards anymore. I've switched to SSD's and the V90 Cards. The speed is worth the money for me. I do understand the whole theme of this video so I get it. 😀 Powerstrips/stingers are 100% required to have in your kit! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten to a location to only find one or two plugs total and not where I need them! Nice job Jared.
I couldn't agree more and personally, I do also shoot the V90's most of the time and I'm always editing off of SSDs, but I do remember when I first started out.. Finding budget friendly options that were usable was a tough process. Stingers are such a "boring" piece of kit, though right? Like, who the heck wants to tote around extension cords and power strips? But man... they're invaluable!
I just use a long neck strap that I can swing to the side, lets me choose in the moment if I want it around my neck or over my shoulder and I use the K&F one so it has the disconnects. One benefit of a good SD card reader is speed. The ones built into most things are terribly slow, if I'm moving over 30GB or something of data it's a lot better to have one with a high rated speed and get 100+MB/S but you need to look at 3rd party reviews to figure out what reader is good for that.
that's not a bad idea, actually! Being able to use it as a neck strap, or to the side is super versatile! In regards to the Card Reader, you've hit the nail on the head.. I've also been in several professional scenarios where you are working with multiple photographers.. which means you may be handed a card style that you don't always use.. so having a reader that can handle various card formats/styles is super helpful and ensures you can handle any card that's thrown your way!
Nice Video. As a camera strap i like to use the Peak Design Slide (around 50 to 60€ used). It can be easily be removed and therefore doesn't get in the way when working with a tripod. I use the following setup as a shoulder strap (as a right-hander). One attachment (Anchor) in the top left corner and one in the bottom left corner (with a Cheese-mounting-plate/ Rig (around 10 to 20€), for example). This means that it always hangs in the same place and is always within easy reach.
@@wamswolf3372 oh that is also a great solution! I also use a few of the peak design options as well, and they are very well made and very handy indeed!
I’m 1 of the 6 people that wanna see the ‘05 Outback photoshoot. Best car ever.
I cannot believe RUclips has connected me with 1 of the 6 in the world! That’s wild 😂😂
Hey Jared, just subscribed and loving your videos! I’m torn between the Sony Alpha a7 IV and Canon EOS R6. Which one do you recommend for both photo and video? Love your work-keep it up, bro!❤
I’ve personally always shot Canon, so that’s my preference. I love how simple their menus are to navigate. I’ve used Sony gear before on other gigs, but never spent enough time with them to get familiar with their (in my opinion) complex menus. I’d recommend staying with whatever brand you already have lenses for because it can be expensive to completely switch systems and buy all new lenses as well. Hope that helps!
@@jaredcollins-photo Thank you so much for your advice! I really appreciate your input about sticking with Canon, especially given how much I value their user-friendly menus. I agree that sticking with a brand I already have lenses for makes the most sense and will save me a lot of hassle and expense. Your insights have been very helpful-thanks again!
Excellent advice! The 24-70 is definitely a workhorse of an option, and the value proposition with it is almost unmatched. Hard to find another F2.8 zoom that basically contains 5 popular focal lengths within👊🏼
I would have to agree with that one! I'm also quite certain that most video shooters could shoot 90% of everything on that lens as well..
I know what I'm about to describe hasn't hit everybody yet but... As time goes on, as there is more and more to do...TIME becomes even more important. And the main goal these days, is to preserve time, hold on to the time we have left. Me specifically....I've spent enough time, editing...at the computer...editing, lol. I am done. lol. The goal is to get everything IN-camera, to bypass that mobile editing, and then bypass that computer editing that happens after the mobile editing. Think about... We / so many people shoot Fuji, to use SIMULATIONS.. So we pick one of those, go shoot, STILL have to edit that image...on mobile, or STILL have to edit that image on the computer. How much TIME are we putting in to this ?! lol. Now imagine you had to do YOUR process, on 100+ images...in 5 different setups.. A "batch edit" aint gon' save you.. It's gonna require more TIME.. Personally, I'm done. As of recently I just been using tools and processes where I can hold on to my time. Frankly, I haven't edited a photo in MONTHS. I'd say I'm holding on to my time.
I personally enjoy editing images because it can breathe life into an image that you saw with your eyes, or you can shape the image to tell the story that you saw in your head when you captured the image. I understand what you mean about time, though. We all only have a finite amount of time here
Any way next time we get a "dongle" counter up on screen whenever you say dongle? I do like the ease and speed of the dongle(unfortunately mine has deceased) One advantage I will expand on further is the fact with some camera manufacturers (fuji) you can only bluetooth JPEG files over and not RAW. I know with the Lumix app it does allow RAW transfer so mileage may vary based on brand. Great vid keep it up!💪🏼
The dongle counter would have been unnecessarily high on this one lol.. I just have always found this workflow to be far faster than any of the app transfers that I've dealt with in the past.
@@jaredcollins-photo oh yes definitely faster than apps. I'm just adding the other advantage of dongle is RAW transfer vs some apps that do not allow it (Fuji)
Could not find unscripted on playstore
Hmmm. I don't have an Android, but their website says they're available on the play store. See if this link works. unscriptedphotographers.com/ There's a button for IOS app and the Play store as well.
Can I write to you on Instagram about a question of smartphone photography?
Absolutely! Send me a DM @jc.capturedit
@@jaredcollins-photo Thank you so much! I will send you a message soon :)
really useful.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. There are tons of great apps out there, but these are my favorites!
The information is very useful. Thanks.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you found it to be helpful!
Awesome stuff! One thing i'll add on lightroom, if you have android you don't have the white border feature. So you'll have to find a different app, or use the "scale" slider in geometry to add a white border. (Unless you have cropped your photo then it won't work either😅)
Oh wow! I honestly had no idea that was just an iOS version feature! I assumed it was the same on both android and iOS.
very good video, but It could be smoother in the cuts and the changes
I let a lot of small mistakes go with the edit on this one because I was in a rush. Thank you, though.
Nice video man, keep going!
I really appreciate that!
Is it possible to do both i want to get into photography but i can't afford a camera but this is a great option for me to be a moble photographer my question is that is it possible to turn mobile photography into a job and in the future do photography with a camera and a smartphone
@@jackhunter4911 I definitely think you could start with mobile and begin to sharpen skills and even make some money at the same time. There are tons of great lens kit options that can even further enhance the capabilities of your smartphone. I’d try to find an app that would let you shoot RAW/dng with your smartphone, though. You’ll have much more flexibility when you go to edit the images if they aren’t the jpgs straight from the phone.
@@jaredcollins-photo are there any tips u can give me like what type of app I can download where I can edit my pictures
Absolutely! I would start with Lightroom Mobile (From Adobe). There's a free version. I'm working on making a tutorial to get started within the app. It can be a bit daunting at first, but it's a super powerful and useful app once you get familiar with it.
I would love a preset from you
Thank you for your interest! I’m working on finalizing one right now!!
Hey, there's a link now in this video description for that Lightroom Preset :)
Four years ago, I,left my Sony mirrorless and went to my iPhone…exclusively! Staying with the iPhone!
Oh wow! That's quite the commitment.. I still prefer to use my mirrorless cameras most of the time, but the iPhone is very very capable!!
My iPhone tends to over expose, same with Samsung's I've had. On my iPhone i lower the EV and it produces much nicer photos with a more correct exposure
Absolutely! I've always felt they were over exposed and too "cool" on the white balance side as well (personal taste)
needed this, ty for this
Hope it helps in some way!
HI - great info, thanks! So, I'm still a novice to a little more advanced than novice when it comes to photo editing. Re: Lightroom Mobile - do you find the necessity to purchase the subscription to get the additional editing functions? I currently use the native IOS 17.5.1 photo editing on my iPhone 15 Pro and I also use Snapseed. I'll sometimes use LR Mobile and I experiment editing with all 3. Just not convinced or sure whether I need to pay for the LR subscription. What's your opinion? Thanks!
I’ve never used snapseed before so I can’t comment on it, and I’m not 100% sure what features you don’t have within the free version of LR Mobile. I think the most powerful features in LR Mobile are the tone curve, the Hue/Saturation/luminance tab, and the color grading panel. Those are the 3 that I miss the most when I try to do a quick edit in the native iPhone app
Loved this video Jared! What would you say are some of your personal favourite in using DSLR vs Mirroless cameras? - have you used both and what would you recommend depending on the scene (i.e nature, portraits, landscapes, macro, night life etc)? Maybe another video idea :)
Are you asking if I prefer or have a recommendation of a DSLR vs a Mirrorless Camera? I've used both and still continue to use both professionally today.
Not first time.😂😂😂😂😂😂
Probably won’t be the last time 😂😂
Either the lens cap is still on, or I've turned the camera off and need to turn it back on to get the shot. Never fails.
Oh yes. Those are the best 😂
Yep this is why my mother has zero wedding photos
Oh gosh! That’s terrible!!
Haha, happens to me all the time. It truly is embarrassing. 😂
Well, at least know, you’re not the only one lol
