Flying is as close to Heaven as you can get without leaving the earth for good. Paragliding is a peaceful way to enjoy the beauty of the sky and not much driving is required. Hang gliding is faster and can be done when the wind is much stronger. On those days when the hills are socked in with clouds, it helps to have an ultralight. I can get in the air with the least fuss by flying my ultralight.
Fog Delay
Ceilings were as low as 500 ft until I finally got a break to climb up between layers. I dressed for the cold.

I made a beeline to the last cumulus clouds left in the sky. They were over Summit Lake
Fright Wave

Wind was forecast to increase, so I got out early. I started getting rocked more than 60 degrees back and forth. I did manage to climb above it and ended up near some developing clouds. I knew I better land soon, because the wind was increasing. I set the throttle to idle and continued to climb! I was in a wave set up by the hills to the west. I managed to fly a little south and I began to desc...

Dense fog was present when I got to the airfield. After I took off the clouds and fog broke up but still filled some of the valleys.
The Unwashed

The rain held off for most of my flight otherwise I would have named it "The Washed". In the 8th minute of the video you can see the storm moving in from the west. There are mouse droppings on top of my wing, that are still there after the flight.

Cloud layers shrouded the field. It was the first day that the smoke let up. West wind was kicking by the time I landed.

Hazy day. Smooth above 2500 ft. Views of the Sound and the west side of the Black Hills. Only bumps felt were on landing.
Reward and Punishment

I saw unexpected Cu's developing on a day that should have had none. I knew that the punishing north wind would manifest at some part of the day. Shortly after takeoff I was hit by a gust that caused me to pull the bar all the way to my gut. It calmed down at about 3500 ft

Some of the most beautiful vertical development I have seen. Smooth flying. Still waiting for starter replacement.

I intended to fly to the towers on the Black Hills, but they were shrouded in clouds. The clouds were pretty, though so I filmed them a bit.

The air was much cleaner today. I found areas where I could get above the lower clouds, but I could not quite break through to full sun.
Off to a Bad Starter

During my preflight, I observed that my starter had fallen apart. I re-assembled it but it would not engage the Bendix. I had to prop start, The day was perfect.

A bit hazy but generally smooth conditions. Hooked a low thermal over the LZ.

I thought I would get some scenic river views. While I was cruising, the north wind turned on and you can see me getting abused on my landing.
Was contemplating a chute on my atf. Do you have any thoughts about parachutes?
I have a hand deploy reserve chute on my ATF. I do not remember the brand, and I have been pretty lax about repacking it. I have routed the lanyards a specified by Northwing.. I have one carabiner attachment point for separating the wing from the trike . It is all on the side that my camera does not see.
How bout sending some of that moisture our way. It's drier than a popcorn fart here in Idaho. Nice flight.
I am sorry about your drought. I sure hope that there are not any fires that get started due to the dry conditions.
Since that time you broke your wrist I always make sure you stick landing before I give the thumbs up
I have not flown my paraglider since April. I don't want to break any more bones..
I don't see much sign of fall there yet but I guess this was posted a month ago.
Yep. I forgot to share it when I made it
Beautiful . Took me right back to when I had a Chaser S Trike (UK) back in the 90's. Happy days
Thanks for the review.
👍👍👍
thanks!
Beautiful flight! Nice day!
Thank you!
Cool flight👍👍
Thank you.
Thats it! Im moving there👍😁 Cheers
Welcome to Washington!
Nice one again 👍 Did you make a deal with a crossroads demon to get such great flying conditions🤣 Do you hanger your trike where fly from and if so do you fold back wing. Just curious as to what some do. I have an enclosed trailer and fold back wing on trike and travel 20 mins to field. Still working on rebuilding my trike since a little mishap last year. Back to flying next year. All the best to you and yours
I keep my trike fully set up in a hangar. I pay $200 per month. I live close enough to the hangar, that I can anticipate the local weather.
Hello over there and great to see you again this monday. 7:03 pm Sat.
Thanks !
Wow 👍
Thanks!
I love the changing of the seasons in the farms and woods below. We are definitely heading toward summer's end.
Thanks. Getting above the inversion has clearer skies.
Sweet flight !
Thanks!
Sweet! Got to love those invisible gusts.
Thanks. Still it's never a good thing when your wing is pointed straight up.

Another day with your head in the clouds 👍
Thanks. Funny how clouds clear my head.
Always fun to watch your great videos 👍
Thank you
that looks so enjoyable. Thanks for sharing
It was almost magical, thanks!
nice...
Thanks!
Beautiful day to fly!
Thank you!
Beautiful! Love those clouds.
Thank you!
Good job!
Thank you
Another epic flight 👍
Thank you!
👍
Thanks!
You honor the first generation of aviators who prop started their planes!
That exact thing used to happen to my old 1968 Plymouth. RrrRrrRrr.
It's probably easier to prop start my trike than to push start your Plymouth
Perfect indeed. Nice view.
Thanks!
Another great flight👍. I had a starter problem recently to. My sprocket broke and hit the starter. This folded the sprocket back and stopped the engine suddenly. Forced landing .
Sorry, I hope you got it up and running again.
Love the clouds.
Thank you.
Real bad nasty cold cough gagging iky stuff.
Sorry to hear that.
Looked like smooth air fun landing👍👍
Not smooth air, but fun landing!
Forecast was for 5 MPH winds from the west. I guess I shouldn't believe everything I read.
Greased that landing!
Thanks. The approach was brutal but the touchdown was sweet.
@@pilotdavelittle I seen that . Sometimes it just works out.
I bet you have the new carbon struts. I have the old aluminum ones with a plastic faring over it, that I fixed so it would not rotate to a ridiculous position.
I have the aluminium struts with the plastic streamlined coverings like yours. The bolts that secure the end mounts to the tubes go through the fairings so they don't rotate on the tubes. In the instruction manual, there is no distinction made for there being a set "right" or left "strut", and they look identical to me. Do you know if there is an actual right and left strut? I have just refrained from flying at high speeds because the vibration is a little unnerving. Mine is an older used Solairus. I don't care much for the instruction manual because there are references to and pictures of the Stratus in it in addition to the Solairus.
Yes. There is a right and left strut. The fitting at the end of the tube is red or green for port/starboard. They should not be able to be assembled on the wrong side. When I got my Solaris the fairings were free floating and I secured them in a slight negative angle of attack relative to the wing. I do not notice any vibration, but my wing pretty much maxes out at 40 MPH. To get there, I have to idle the engine and pull in hard while fighting the dive recovery. Dave
@@pilotdavelittle Thanks, I'll check it out.
@@pilotdavelittle I also fixed my strut covers so they don’t rotate. I used Velcro.
I am glad that secured them from moving. Probably allows for adjusting if needed, as well.
Hey Dave, have you ever had your struts vibrate when flying fast? Mine vibrated quite a bit around 40 MPH or so. Thanks.
PS- The air looked pretty bumpy for sure.
Good flight👍
fantastic!
Thank you!
Looked a bit bumpy on landing! Was that a gust that lifted you off after you had landed?
Yep. I thought I was down like a stone and suddenly I caught some air. It was really churning in the field..
Dave, I learn somethingn from you every time! I had to look this up: "The "glory" is the nimbus of light that appears to outline the shadow of your plane on the ground when viewed from above." Awesome!
Thank you. The glory is most dramatic against cloud surfaces though.
I love flying in the clouds ! So cool!
Thanks. It is like a dream.
Nice video Dave. Was wondering if you fly with a reserve? I sure miss Washington!
I have a hand deploy reserve on might right side. It has not been repacked for a while. Thankfully my ultralight is very stable in flight. I inspect the crossbar junctions and hang point (visually) each flight. I check that the mast is secure each flight along with all the engine, tire and electrical checks. I replace the heart bolt(s) every 200 hours, although I have never seen any significant wear. I had the sail off for repairs about a year ago. No general frame concerns. I replaced the rear wires due to concerns about vibration. If I think of it as a hangglider with a motor, I have not broken a hangglider in 45 years of flying. Still, it's a long way down, so watchfulness is in order.
You obviously love to soar with the clouds, thanks for sharing your experience 👍
They are magical and everchanging. As a child, I remember watching them become one imaginary creature and then another.
👍
Thanks.
Was it rough under the clouds? Did it smooth out over them? Cool flight!
Overall , it was not a turbulent day. I would say that at one point as I got into cloudsuck, it was much smoother.
Love the cloud flying !🛩
Thank you.
Did you have to check for radiation when you landed 😂😂 another great flight!
I had to brush the neutrons off my wing. They were increasing the drag coefficient.
By the title I thought maybe you were going to install a Mr Fusion🤣
It would definitely improve on the engine noise, I think.
Incredible scenary. Enjoyed very much.
Thank you. I am working on a couple camera options.
After that time you broke your wrist I always watch the landing before I give a thumbs up.
My wife said I should fly my ultralight, not my paraglider, and stop falling from fatal heights.
From the video, around 4:20, it looks like your ground speed drops nearly to zero due to the headwind. Is that right, or is it an illusion?
Good observation. I was facing an East wind at the time. It also had north in it and I hoped for it to be more east at the LZ
@@pilotdavelittle Dave if zero ground speed is OK with you we can just tie a string to you and fly you like a kite!
Great flight. Beautiful hills. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching. I am glad to be able to share the beauty of flying.
Very nice👍
Thanks
