    Can it quantize the audio of your out of time

      @minimal.camera День назад

      The recording start and stop times are quantized, but it does not shift the audio waveform, so if you are playing guitar or something you will still need to be on time. It will timestretch by default whenever you change the tempo.

      TR6S is great for finger drumming with a midi controller! You can do it on the unit too, but only with tiny pads. MPC One would be better if you want a sampler, TR6S is better as strictly a drum machine.

    Good, extensive review! Thank you for sharing! One nitpick. You say it can't chain patterns at 22:40, but it can. But you sadly can't change the patterns while they're playing in a chain, which makes it very static (other than being able to throw in some probability, which is nice).

    • @minimal.camera
      @minimal.camera 24 дня назад

      That's right, I had forgotten about the pattern chaining feature when I made this video, and currently I still don't use it, I tend to sequence the Volca Drum externally most of the time.

    Is there a way to factory reset a channel after you've saved to it? I was wondering if you had to just factory default the whole machine 🤔

    • @minimal.camera
      @minimal.camera 24 дня назад

      If by 'channel' you mean 'part' (1 of the 10 sample slots), then no, I don't think there's a way to factory reset each part. If you need to start from scratch, just set all the knobs to a neutral position (far right for most of them, far left for a few), and pick a new sample.

    I'm exploring different ways of controlling rack synths, and I couldn't pass up a M:S on Reverb for $170 + 25 s/h with the cover. So now I'm kinda learning about it. This is pretty helpful! And it's the most pleasant color grade of any M:S video! 😂 It's funny how many samplers are great for sequencing external stuff. You can get a non-plus Polyend Play for under $400. The Play is awesome in a lot of ways. It has separate USB vs. TRS Jack MIDI busses, so you have 32 different channels you can assign to any step of any track. The less-than-great thing about the Play is that it's monophonic if you're recording from a keyboard. It can play chords if you actually program the chord (it has several chord options). And the selected sample is global. So the Play is a bit slower workflow for making a beat than most drum machines because every time you change which track you're working on you need to long-press one of the notes to select it as the current sample. The KO2 is awesome for controlling external stuff if you like working with a bunch of looping patterns. You have 4 groups of 12 pads and can assign any channel to any group/pad combination, and it's polyphonic, so it's great for playing your own chords on an external keyboard. And I love the buttons (I think they're cherry MX switches). I just always prefer to have a TR-style sequencer with 16 steps. That's why I think the M:S seems pretty great. It's more like a cut down Analog RYTM. I like the layout of the M:S so much more than a Digitakt. I just wish they had a nicer one with higher quality buttons and a bit better screen. If they made a $400 M:S except it was the build quality of a Digitakt and had an internal battery that lasted a couple hours people would love it.

    • @RaquelFoster
      @RaquelFoster 2 месяца назад

      Oh and the Play is also pretty portable because it takes USB-C power, and it's a PD profile that's pretty ubiquitous. And the stupidest thing about it is that it uses Type B MIDI.

    • @RaquelFoster
      @RaquelFoster 2 месяца назад

      Last thing... The Midi Fighter Twister is definitely a better $200-ish MIDI controller with a buncha knobs!

    • @minimal.camera
      @minimal.camera 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for the info, and I agree! The M:S actually was $400 at launch, it's just come down a lot now. I agree that there's room for a more premium version that keep the layout, it is really nice to use. Glad you like my color grade too, I often watch stuff late at night and hate when a video has a clinical bright white background blinding me, so I try to fight against that with warm tonez....

    • @minimal.camera
      @minimal.camera 2 месяца назад

      The Twister is indeed rad, but unfortunately it is USB only, so if you add a USB host to it, that's another $50 - $100 on top of the price. The Intech Studio Grid is another similar option, for a bit cheaper.

  • @aliravan

    Thank you for the great info. Can you please explain how to utilize more than the 16 different sounds , since from what you explained 16 sequences with each having 16 different pads. Hopefully I’m understanding correctly. Thank you.

    • @minimal.camera
      @minimal.camera 2 месяца назад

      Each pad can play a folder's worth of samples with the 'multisamples' capability. So instead of loading a single sample onto a pad, you load a folder of samples with a specific naming convention that tells the Blackbox how to map them out of the keyboard. Then in sequencing, different notes will trigger different samples. I believe the upper limit is 80 samples per project/preset, so you can distribute those 80 samples across the 16 pads however you like. Also, each sequencer lane has 4 variations, so you could for example have each pad mapped to 4 different samples (so a total of 64 samples for the project/preset), then each sequencer variation A - D would trigger a different sample. Could be helpful for building out different parts of a song, if you want the samples used for each part of the song to be completely different.

    Great video! Nice thoughtful comparison and explanation. (Although I got different math: 256 steps is actually just 16 bars, not 64 bars, if you have 16 steps to the bar. (At 11:16) Still 4X longer sequences than Digitakt I and 2X longer than Digitakt II, for people seeking those long sequenced passages without using a DAW! You also confirmed what i thought that led me to buy the BB: playback of long, high-fidelity WAV samples (even songs). Another function of the 16-bar sequence length I discovered recently is recording MIDI basslines and audio piano/guitar comping for jazz tunes with AABA forms of 8-bar or 16-bar sections. It’s a fast way to create backing tracks for soloing or singing over. Thanks again!😎
