Interpretation of St. John's Revelation by R.H.C. Lenski. Section from Introduction re: The structure of the Book of Revelation Views regarding the structure of Revelation are connected with its interpretation. Some divide it into two main parts, others into seven or more. Often this division depends on the amount of history Revelation is thought to include. For some Revelation covers only the general period of John, in particular the fall of Jerusalem and the fall of the Roman Empire with Nero and the Nero-redivivus myth as the center. Others find in it all of history since Christ’s first advent plus the history of the church - all this in chronological sequence. Some speak of cycles, some of recapitulation. Many attempt to locate our own times at some point in the prophecies. Some regard only the seven letters to the seven churches as pertaining to the present and place all the rest into the future to be realized shortly before the end; sometimes even these seven churches are made prophetic of the end. Some seek to interpret in a purely historical way, while others idealize or allegorize. It is bewildering and discouraging. But one sees how thus the book has come to be divided in a variety of ways. Seven parts seem attractive because seven plays a great role throughout the book. Are there really ordinary divisions in Revelation? To be sure, each vision stands out distinctly, and we can mark off fairly well one after another. Yet when one seeks for something more, others are able to point out his inadequate combinations or something still more serious in his conception of the book. Ordinary books have blocks of thought; we see through their structure and note how one block is built upon another. Yet in I John we find a totally different structure: a basic fact and then an upward and ever-widening spiraling until the end is reached. It is not claimed that Revelation has such a plan, but I John teaches us that building with blocks is not the only structural plan found in Scripture. In seven different places Revelation reaches the end of the world: 6:12-17; 7:9-17; 11:18; 14:4-20; 16:17- 21; 19:11-21; 20:7-15. The note of the end is struck already in two of the letters, “Till I come” (2:25); “Behold I am coming quickly!” (3:11). Again, Revelation presents a number of scenes in heaven with great doxologies. To these scenes we may add the first revelation of Christ in 1:9-20. Yet we are unable to use these features for making divisions in a convincing way, although it has been attempted: a heavenly scene introducing each part and then earthly scenes following it. We frankly give up the attempt to divide this book in an ordinary way. At most one could detach 1:9- 3:22, and again chapters 21 and 22, but what about all that lies between? As far as the writer is able to see, the visions, from first to last, present lines or vistas. These start at various points, but like radii or rays all focus upon the final judgment and the eternal triumph. The final visions (chapters 21 and 22) present the triumph at length. All history is covered, but not as we read history but only as God sees it. The veiling clouds open now and again and allow us to see vision after vision until at last our eyes behold the vision of the Holy City itself. Times and seasons are not for us to know (Acts 1:7), but the sure triumph, glorious over and amid them all, is. I am able to offer no more regarding the structure. ------------------------------------------------------ Re: The seven mountains. Rev 17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. This is a list of seven (mountains/mounts) that surrounds Jerusalem. 1- Mt. Goath, 2- Mt. Gareb, 3- Mt. Acra, 4- Mt. Bezetha, 5- Mt. Zion, 6- Mt. Ophel, and 7- Mt. Moriah. Jerusalem is surrounded by seven (mountains/mounts) whereas Rome is surrounded by (seven hills). Also Israel had kings whereas Rome has Emperors...another difference. I would challenge anyone to do a study in the O. T. re: mountains which is a metaphor for Kings. There is a spiritual sense to this word. Do you recall when Jesus mentioned in Mathew 17:20, He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” Do you really think He was talking about a physical mountain? I think not.

When it comes to dating the NT, I find it interesting that none of the NT authors mention the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. Hebrews (a book we don't know the date or author of) clearly implies that the temple and sacrificial system are still in place. The gospels have Jesus' prediction of the temple being destroyed, but never seem to gloat or make reference to the fact that it actually came true. Particularly John (regarded as the last gospel). John has a habit of translating and explaining for his audience (rabbi means teacher, for example) or saying things that would happen later as he tells his story of Jesus (he mentions that Judas is the one who would betray Jesus). But none of the gospels actually point out that the temple WAS EVENTUALLY destroyed. None of the NT epistles (at least the ones that survived) mention it either. That is an earth-shattering event that you think would be made reference to if the books were written after 70AD (or edited by a later redactor).

When it comes to Dispensationalism and especially those who think there is going to be a "rapture" (a concept completely foreign to the Biblical authors), I call all of that "Cartoon Christianity". It's like cringey made-for-tv sci-fi movie or a kid's cartoon version of Christianity, and it's extremely frustrating to endure. Particularly because those who believe it are frequently the loudest in any group and all it takes is to get two of them together and then they absolutely dominate the entire discussion and make it all about their fantasies.

Might be me but how exactly do we get Revelation written before 70 A.D.? Simply can't if you want to remain historically consistent. John was never banished to Patmos until 90/95 A.D. I hear many try their best to explain it away... But then we get so many other inconsistencies... When exactly did the the scroll, bowl, and trumpet judgements occur? And Christians beheaded.... Not argument Christians were persecuted and fed to the lions... But that is man's wrath... Not God's wrath...

Ditch the ridiculous title of "preterist" and just be a Bible believing follower of Jesus. Preterist cultists pretend that their theoretical heresy has historic confirmation. Nonsense. NO where in history is there any record of these things below, in the WORD, happening. They have not yet happened. WHERE in history do we see the fulfillment of the following? We do not. "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. 8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is TO COME, the Almighty." Revelation 1:7-8 The Coming of the Son of Man "Immediately AFTER the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." If your "Jesus" has already come, He's "another Jesus" and not "the Almighty" who said He's coming "in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory ... with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other."

One of the great ethnocentric projections into biblical literature is the constant assumption that a biblical book like Revelation has one date of completion., as if publication in the ancient Near East was operating on the modern methods of review, editing, submission and printing. Since the books were "living' words, alive in the hearing of the assembles. they could well have been formed like living organisms, in ongoing stages. one stage of Revelation seems rooted in mid 60s AD experience, another layer perhaps decades later.

Paul warned us to have on the whole armor of God that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Paul called the devil the god of this world who blinds the minds of those who believe not. The majority of people are still in spiritual darkness. How can anyone take serious the thought that when it talks about the devil being bound for a thousand years in order for him to not be able to decieve the nations till the thousand years are expired, to mean that he is just limited in his power? That's pretty weak. You have to really want to believe that in order to believe that. That took someone's imagination to come up with that.

Fantastic discussion! It did seem to go a little awry on the millennial reign at the end. It seems to me the position Gore is taking there can only be held when ignoring the many instances in the prophets (and Psalms) that speak of a time when the Lord is literally, physically located in a spot on the Earth, ruling. Of course, Psalm 2 famously states that "I will set My King on My holy hill". But then there's Micah 4 that says in the latter days the house of the Lord will be established on the top of the mountains, above all other hills, and that people will flow to it and say "come, let us go up and be taught by Him". Zechariah 14:16 also says people will go up to where the King is to worship Him, and to celebrate the feast of Tabernacles (God with us). Ezekiel 39 says that the Lord Himself will draw up the nations to where He is in the north, where the mountains of Israel are - they think they are coming to make war with Him and the camp of the Saints, but the Lord says He is drawing them up in order to destroy them with fire from Heaven (Gog/Magog). The encircling of the camp of the saints at the end of satan's little season (which is AFTER the millennial reign) clearly indicates that the Lord Himself is present in that specific location on the Earth. A literal reign on the Earth. Shalom!

The following observation relates to how we have imposed things on the biblical text which has allowed error and misunderstanding to seep in. There were no “chapters” in the text. I know it seems pedantic to remind people of that fact, but it is kinda important. Chapters tend to impose an order and contextual structure that shapes perception of how the text is read. When the author does so, the divisions are truly internal and meaningful to the text. When editors or others add chapter and verse their particular impressions are superimposed on the text. I like my standard Bible-and use chapter and verse often. I also have a smooth reading Bible and one on audio. They have no chapter and verse breaks and no “headings” (example: my Spirit-Filled Life NKJV study Bible has “Jesus and the Fig Tree” before the passages where Jesus encounters the fig tree. Innocuous in that instance, but it disconnects the passages from the previous ones.)

    • @oracleoftroy
      @oracleoftroy 5 месяцев назад

Agree. And even more so, I would stress that there were no pericopes and no verses either. The number of times people think a single verse taken out of context or the editor inserted pericope heading is enough to establish doctrine is disturbing. I'd be happier if people at least read the whole chapter their verse appears in and explained how it fits into the flow of the text, but people treat verses like it is a choose your own theology adventure book that you get to mix and match until you come up with your preferred beliefs.

That's the biggest problem. Many Christians have a view of the Bible that is closer to the way Muslim's view the Quran. The Bible isn't a magical book dictated word for word from God to a single person. It's a collection of books and letters written over the course of 1000 years about specific situations and times in history... and written to very specific audiences. That's what is most baffling about Revelation. The author specifically, very clearly addresses the book to 7 churches that were there at the time he was writing. He even talks about very unique situations going on in each church. It can't be clearer who he is writing to. The fact that people want to make it all about them 2000 years later is egomaniacal to say the least.

These days there is so little evidence of Satan being bound that we could be forgiven for believing that we are in the little season when he is set free to decieve even the elect... ie: The moon landings, JFK, Vietnam war, 9/11 big Pharma lies and covid, our world wide corrupt governments working together against the people and the lies about the shape of our earth and space ..... I think there's a good argument that history has been rewritten and we are living in that little season where we are born into a world of lies and deception .... The middle ages sometimes called the Dark Ages could have been the reign of Christ on earth and could actually have been an age of light.

It is derived from an archaic greek root meaning "to separate between the valuable and the worthless. Clearly, there is a future event in which we will sit with Jesus Christ and divide the angels into the faithful and the worthless. When does this trial of the angels take place and is it described later in the Bible (hint: it is)

If I say something like "man I called you ten times already and you havn't answered!" there is a difference from "I will run Ten miles with you tomorrow". ...We need to always understand context. Within the Context of the 1,000 years is also the description of the 'beheaded' Saints reigning...So, is this figurative as well and the Lord did not raise them up for a time to reign? I did enjoy the interview, but there are many things that need to be addressed. One example is "Could it be we are in the "Little Season" of deception, when Satan has been loosed again to deceive the Nations in the four quarters of the earth? It does not seem like Satan is having any trouble blinding the minds of people or entire Nations for that matter, at this point in History! How does he explain the horrific wars based in Atheistic Philosophy that almost destroyed Europe etc...We have the constant daily battle with the fallen ones and wickedness in High Places...principalities,powers...dominions..and our own flesh...etc. Look at what is going on world wide! We are not in just another time...they are using very evil things (tech.) all around us to damage our bodies, including the constant weather modification etc....Do you understand that Evolution and the Globe Model are a Lie, that they do not align with what Jesus designed. We very well have had history manipulated and revised all around us, we cannot depend on men or for that matter what every Historian says. Do we have to be Biblical Scholars with endless degrees to Understand God's Word? Did God Preserve His Word as he said he would in Psalm 12? What about the FACT that all the ancient prophecies only describe forms of ancient warfare...horses, bows, arrows, shields, swords...etc...This makes me think we are WAY after the Tribulation described in Revelation and the War of Armageddon...even the 1,000 years! We most likely are that generation living in the 'Time of Deception'....the great, great, great...grandchildren of those who did not 'Believe' during the Millennium. Because there IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the Bible that describes our form of civilization today...so I'm thinking it can only fit in the "Little Season". I wish with all may heart that All denominations, Thinkers and Believers would come together and address these things...But, everyone always thinks they have the answer...so they stop searching. There are the little people...not scholars...discovering Melted Structures All over the earth (Meltology)...people who are thinking and wondering...while the leaders are saying the same things over and over...and REFUSE to answer simple questions! I study my Bible and this is the best conclusion I can come to, the idea that we are actually living in a time with Christ reigning with a 'rod of iron' just doesn't make sense...Heavenly Jerusalem is removed, now we wait for its return...(I think!)

Then there is the truth. Historicism the way Daniel teaches it: a sequence of foreign powers (the Gentiles) who occupy Jerusalem sequentially for 2,556 years and 8 months. That is, seven times 365.2 years, where 365 years is both the number of days of the year, rendered as years, as well as the number of years the Solomon Temple existed prior to the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem. Thereafter, the seven times of discipline of the nation of Israel, lasted until June 1967 and the Six Day War. It was then Jerusalem was also reunified / resanctified as the Daniel 8, 2,300 prophecy foretold. The midpoint? AD 689 when the construction of the abomination buildings began on the Temple Mount. The Dome of the Rock and then the al Aqsa Mosque on a wing (level platform) as Daniel stated.

We are now entering Daniel’s last milestone; his 1,335th year since the abomination of desolation in AD 689. There are no more prophetic milestones with dates attached anywhere in scripture. ‘Seven Times: Egypt to Istanbul’

Completely false. The Thousands of years you stated are utter fabrications. This has ZERO to do with Islam. It also has ZERO to do with the Catholic Church. These are fabricated boogeymen made up and injected in a story and prophecy that already occurred and passed.

Bruce is one of my heroes. Along with R.C.Spoul, and Jeff Durban. I always felt there was something missing from the futurist concept of eschatology. And the "heaven bound" rapture idea was bunk, a total miscarriage of N.T. exegesis.!!!!!

Thank you Bruce Gore. Your series on Revelation really is spot on. More of both the old and New Testament makes even more sense. It’s a shame so many pastors are misleading the church with false left behind nonsense. The parable of the wheat and tares alone demolishes the pre trib rapture lie. I’m listening to your series on John next. Keep teaching with the Holy Spirit. He’s the one that’s teaching us through people like yourself. Question, how do so many pastors that are high up in Christianity get off track with left behind? McArthur just to name one. They will get in your face and call you deceived.

@roywhite8504 scriptures don't lie son, preterist are the liars. You can't get a post trib-Rapture out of Isa. 26:19:21, Rev. 12:5, 6:1, Jude 14 or Zach. 14:15. What you are is a foolish virgin and will be left behind.

MacArthur knows this futurist's nonsense is a money maker!!! A whole industry has been erected to facilitate all this hogwash!!!!!. Ask David Jeremiah, he can drive down to the bank blindfolded and deposit "your"money into "his" account!!!!! And he's not alone!!!!!! This is no joke!!!!!

@@davidwoods6015 I argue to differ because I'm learned and have made zero $$$,$$$.$$ preaching the pre-trib Rapture and all Israel will be saved. Why? Because the Bible tells me so. What's your argument of proof?

Gore is in error on the 7 hills. Jerusalem is the city with 7 hills and she is the beast, as well as the whore. I watched Gore a few years and realized he has some errors in his theology. The Book of Revelation was written before 70ad as the temple was still standing. The abomination that causes desolation is the position of the High Priest (the Last one) is whom caused the destruction of the temple. This man Phinnias ben Samuel (son of Samuel) of whom had no Levite bloodline, only the sons of Aaron were allowed to hold that position, He was the anti-christ, the people cast lots for him (took money for him to be in that office), the other priests had to teach him what to do. While he was offering a sacrifice to God all mighty, he was struck dead. No son of Samuel was allowed to be in that office, he was considered illegally a High Priest. From 67ad to 70ad. If one goes backward in time from the 70ad mark, take 3 years off for the Great Tribulation , that it is 66ad, now take off 40 years to allow for repentances' which God tried to turn them back to him and they refused. 66ad minus 40 years, brings us to the year of 26ad the year the Lord was crucified. And it was a Jubilee, scripture gives us the answer, as Christ and his disciples walked in the fields eating the heads of grain, this was allowed through the law, this points to a Jubilee year, besides other proofs. taking the money Judas sold Christ for, we see there is a time of the Jubilee year which there are many clues in the scriptures, Christ was valued by the Priests at 30 pieces of silver which gives way to his actual age, which was 49.7 years old leaving a full 5 months until he turned 50 years old. This makes Christ born in 25bce, when there are signs in the heavens declaring his birth, this same sign was showing for 3 years in the heavens. This is the sign the Maji followed. Follow-up and study this out so others can not call you crazy, these things are all in the scriptures, they all point to Christ................ Blessings

It's a LITERAL 1000 years. Even Messianic Jews know this. Just because the word "thousand" is used metaphorically Elsewhere in Scripture, does NOT make it a metaphor Everywhere in Scripture. Common sense! The Biblical concept of a thousand years for a day points to a 1000 year rest after a 6000 year work week. There's a tendency to over-spiritualize the specifics and to take Hebraic hyperbole as Literal. It's not just TEXTUAL context, but CULTURAL context that is required. A generation is 40 years. That's the number we should go by because it was EXACTLY 40 years from Jesus' prophecy (THIS generation) up to 70 AD. I don't think this guy is detailed enough -- too conversational and not scholarly enough for my taste. Why do we need to dismiss the dispensations that are clearly in the TEXT?? Darby, Scofield, Ryrie may have made erroneous conclusions with that concept BUT, it IS in the Bible! What Jesus said about the ending of an age and the start of a new age IS "Dispensations" -- that's what the word means! We are NOW in the "Church Dispensation" or "Grace Dispensation." If you want to be critical about Darby, then call it "Darbyism" for crying out loud.
