HOW To Get Faked Out With Shooters As A Goalie - Part I
How do I deal with pump fakes from a shooter?? Especially when they are intense realistic pump fakes, I need to react in some way but still wait for the shot. I want to address this finally; something talked about a lot but no one seems to give mechanical or technical advice with their opinions.
When a shooter is faking the ball and we need to stay patient and wait for the shot, how do we do that? We can't give up our hands or the compression in our legs in order to explode. Once we give any of those up, we turn into just existing and hope we can hang out to our position or they shoot into our position. This is only the first concept I start with on how to help with that patience. React on...

Priorities For Training A Beginner Water Polo Goalie
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.6 месяцев назад
I choose these 3 areas to focus on for a few reasons, and #1 really gives a good foundation to best build upon. It's almost harder to train your habit on this later in your career if you haven't became more naturally good at it from your training early on. My video for what I train with eggbeater for a goalie: ruclips.net/video/4uWCXHjEipc/видео.html Pointing Pull-Downs for training to control ...
Sacrifice The Distance of Your Steps (Advanced)
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.8 месяцев назад
DISCLAIMER: This is for advanced goalies, not for beginners. So I'm taking a risk being misunderstood if you're new to the position. All goalies need to train doing your rotations quicker and how much distance you can get in your lateral movement.) For situations when you read and process that a shot is about to happen and you (/and your defense )is out of position, don't do a full length step ...
How To Teach The Base Position For Beginners
Просмотров 91410 месяцев назад
There's a couple different analogies I've heard out there for the water polo goalie base position. They're all helpful as long as they work. Here's what I use to help educate new beginner goalies. I also like this analogy because it usually matches up with beginner's ages. Youth athletes can very easily imagine a school desk, as well as younger students desks, so it usually helps match the educ...
Lateral Pointing Pulldowns
Просмотров 70711 месяцев назад
I've had a theory on this approach and have been doing this for years now both in playing and with athletes that I coach. This is NOT for teaching blocking to beginners(although that could be an entirely separate experiment) but to avoid a negative affect from over-training one technique and instead focus on a more beneficial skill to utilize with higher level shooters. I start and go in this v...
7 Things I Coach For Eggbeater For Goalies
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.Год назад
Once you know how to tread water, there's a few specific things that are best to do if you are playing goalie in water polo specifically. I could honestly speak at length on each of these points and even more, but I want to keep this simple for beginners and coaches. Once these can be solidified, goalies can get into some more advanced positions and techniques, all the while perfecting these co...
Stay Inside Your Peripheral Vision
Просмотров 799Год назад
Here is a benchmark you can reference when measuring your hands and arms when you react for shots. Often this is going to be more useful for coaches to see in the moment to give feedback, but if you're able to watch yourself on film or realize how your arms are moving in your reactions, stay at the edges of your peripheral vision. If your arms go behind or stay out of your vision, they will eit...
What to Look For in Choosing a Water Polo Goalie

Here’s what I recommend you look for if you need to select an athlete out of a group to be the goalie. I also include at the end a potential surprise for something that I don’t necessarily look for and often even ignore. . Stay tuned for more to come! Videos are edited and produced myself. Elements to Being a Water Polo Goalie
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.Год назад
Starting the Beginner series, I first wanted to cover just a quick overview of all the elements that go into playing this position. Not so much the flashy marketed scenarios we go through, but more so a review of the physical and mental areas and traits that I train and coach. 4K Subtitles/Closed-Captions are auto-translated into 20 languages. Here to empower, educate, and grow athletes and coa...
Short Term Outlook
Просмотров 109Год назад
I'm anxious about getting so much out there but I know I can't put everything out all at once. This will be an experiment as I alternate posts between beginner level series of information as well as high level advanced techniques. They might clash, but they might be okay for each group watching either. What do you think? I don't want want beginners and coaches to watch advanced videos that migh...
Meet Sophia!

Aggressive Cactus

Here's an approach to a position that I don't believe has ever been labeled or given proper attention and studied to get technique. Once you understand the circumstances for the position, one might agree with me that it is an under-utilized position. I believe often goalies are left to their own style or preference for blocking stance before these shots, as long as they "just get up" and out of...
My Preferred Base Position
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.Год назад
I wanted to introduce (at least) my preferred base position and explain why the elements of this are superior for me vs. any other way. I recognize others might play and coach the base position or smaller elements within it to be something else and I can see why, but watch why I think it's best to utilize this position. Others can have their benefits for sure, but the preparation for our such v...
👍👍👍
Great channel, Joey! I was a goalie down south in high school & college. Now I’m part of a masters program. I’ve lost my mojo & your channel really helps 🤙🏼
Love the videos. Are we going to get a Part 2 soon?
Well done! So hard to learn and execute. Vital towards elevating one's ability to handle/block the highest level of shot/shooters.
Hi Joey, im a goalie looking to improve. I look at players their shoulders and eyes to see when they are gonna shoot. Should i stop doing that and keep my eyes on the ball at all times?
totally agree
thank 1 m ex goalie and now coach and totally agree with all your comments
@@FredericBaudet-l8d thanks and hope it helps!
📀 Deslumbrante masterpiece 👏 Te molará mi espectáculo! ✊
Great job Joey! Love the word 'dissociate' because all the shooters want is to get our legs and arms work in sync with their fake ('pumping' so to speak). I am adding this to my arsenal of ways of explaining and teaching ... the same thing 🙂 Thank you
I'm happy we can help each other!!
any tips on inside/center shots?
Coming soon! But be aggressive on the shot instead of waiting for it.
Should i look at the ball or the player while saving the ball
**If the ball is already traveling on its path after being released, 100% the ball 👌
Thank you so much. This really help us who need guidance.
Glad it's helpful!
Hello joey,i am a beginner water polo goalkeeper for secondary 1/first year of high school, and i am able to tread water so that my shoulders stay a little dry,but i am not able to really explode and jump out out of the water properly.if the opponent does a corner shot maybe it is just able to touch my fingertips. do you have any tips or excercises i can use?
great explanation.
Glad you think so!
this video gave me much more insight in the base position, i will deffenitly try this in my own training.
Maybe a series about mental game of a goalie can be very interesting!
Thank you so much for all this information. Love the way you break down your instruction. I've been sharing it with young athletes who don't have these resources. Thank you again.
I'm glad it's been helpful! I'll keep it up
Joey, very well articulated. I could not agree more with every aspect of this analysis/strategy.
I like that you are building simple while important physical AND mental foundations. Well done.
Huge things that I would NOT want a goalie to ever be without. I'll hone other things down the road
i love how he invited viktor nagy to film a "begginer water polo goalie" guide 😆😆
I'm glad someone else also laughed at that complete irony 🤣
Great video!👍
Excellent vidéo! Congratulations for tout Channel i juste suscribed .Salim from paris
Thank you! Merci
Good stuff we have now come to expect from you Joey! I am sure you will probably cover this in yuor future video(s) but related to this is your body position, actually seen in this video too. When it comes to setting to shots from the sides, goalies don't need to perfectly 'square' the shooter at 90 degree angle but can stay more level with the goal line (the purists would call that 'cheating', I would call it intelligent use of energy 🙂), as long as they cover the angle adequately (without over-covering). This then affects the amount and shape of the 'step' required. But as you say - this is pretty advanced stuff and comes just about insintictively after years of playing. Keep up your great work an thank you again. T
You're absolutely correct Tomaz! Indeed a future video and I call that concept "square in the air." When you don't even have time for any step at all.
Great stuff, Joey! Thanks so much!
Don't you think coordination and agility is harder to determine an athlete's ceiling and more easily developed? Compared to physical dimensions as you said
I'm not saying they'll have a ceiling or limit from a lack of athleticism here(or any kind of pre-determined success or failure). More-so that it'll be quite easier to coach the specifics of technique with the unique position if they already have a decent level of athleticism. It's that initial teaching of awkward unique technique details to beginners that makes me value athleticism over any sort of physical dimensions. Great question!
Thank you Joey. Awaiting for new videos.
Well done Joey. This addresses what SO many goalies, including those in higher levels of competition, need to understand and appreciate
Outstanding Joey. I've used other analogies but this one beats them all. Thank you for this and a really clear explanation 🙏
😣 "Promo sm"
It’s a pity, but in the game the throw is much stronger, you can return a very weak blow this way)
Succinct and accurate. Any and all goalies, field players and coaches can benefit
hi, it would be interesting to see your full training in the gym and pool for the goalkeeper
Hey Joey, when you have the leading hand out or while holding a weight, why does that hand not go in the water after the lunge?
Truly only for the sake of the drill emphasizing the opposite hand's usage and legs. Of course there would be a slap on the surface of the water for recovery at the end of a regular lunge, but if I'm forced to keep that hand dry I automatically have to "bring my legs with me" to land on while also getting a good recovery PULL after the PUSH. In some variations of this set however I do still have athletes doing the slaps, then back to starting dry.
Well articulated Joey. Being able to explain well eggbeater in this simple and direct manner is a skill .
Thank you so much!
You a real one for this :)
great video! thank you joey!!
Thank you so much for making this video! i'm a goalie myself in High School so this video really helps.
Wow, I’ve been looking for someone to explain goalie tips in depth for so long. I’m so glad I finally found someone. Thanks so much for making these video
thanks for the videos
Great video!
Awesome content Joey! I'm excited that your videos are out and available to the goalie community. We will definitely be utilizing your training tips at Rocklin high. Thanks!
Well done Joey. This drill/technique of the "off" or "opposite" hand is so important when maximizing lateral reach.
Right!? So important! It's like my "Wax on, wax off" drill.
