Conductor Mk ii from Ghost Note Audio - unboxing - Review - Demo
Conductor Mk ii from Ghost Note Audio is a set of 3 full-throw 100mm faders for transmitting MIDI CC (Continuous Controller) messages. Once I gett it out the box 😊 I explain what it does and show it in action. It might be useful if your MIDI keyboard controller does not have faders (nudge: Native Instruments' S Series...)

Get Jacob Collier To Help With Your Next Tune 😲
For a three fader controller that you can only reprogram on line, sorry, I think it's waaaay expensive. I've got an iCon Pro Audio iControls unit, 9 faders, 9 encoders, joystick, on pc editor, which can save / edit up to 4 sets of assignments andit also has DAW transport controls. Real quality build too, the faders are superb. that cost me 30 quid on eBay.
Looks awesome 👍
I agree with you regarding the minuscule boutique format, but the JD-800 engine can actually be loaded into the Jupiter-X and Jupiter-Xm, providing you will all the controls you will ever need.
Better but not quite a JD-800 😊
I've had mine for a couple of years, has the sound of 5 screens and 3 radio channels in it before I go into powered monitors (KRK's) . I find this much easier than dealing with any other type of switching system....
You use what works for you
As far as I know, expression is just volume control in most of these libraries. While CC1 (mod) fades through actual unique samples recorded at different dynamic ranges, expression doesn't in libraries like Spitfire/Cinesamples and many others. Have been under the hood of libraries like Albion and Cinestrings/brass often, to make some changes and never saw anything that showed CC11 was controlling unique samples or filters. I believe in walkthrough videos from Spitfire Audio, they also mentioned it, its just volume. Correct me if I'm wrong though, but I think that if one hears a difference (in libraries like Albion One and Cinesamples, it's the ear being tricked.
I think you're right in many cases. If you increase the volume of a sound it appears 'bigger' and brighter. That's why louder music generally sounds better. Expression is just a CC message which can be applied to many parameters. So it could be used for volume or the cut off or whatever. Although Spitfire's expression slider responds to expression info, I think you're right in that it only affect volume which is rather disappointing , although varying the note volume after production is a positive. Cinebrass' expression parameter is linked to CC1 but it very noticeably changes the note's timbre as you can hear in the demo. So I guess some instruments don't use expressioon or any other message to change timbre with volume while others which do may not use the expression message.
@@IanWaugh Yup. In regards to Spitfire, I checked after I wrote it here and I noticed there is even a little text written on the interface under the expression slider "controls volume". I personally link CC11 to CC1 to ride both of them with 1 slider in most cases (same with Eastwest libraries), so Im happy it's there though. If have to take a look at Cinesamples again.... I thought it was the same for expression (no unique samples or filters) and that they only use CC1 for dynamics and CC2 (breath control) to control the vibrato layer, but it has been a while for me working with them.
@@AndriesdeHaan Sounds like cheating to me 🤔 If it doesn't change the tone, what's the point? I have several Spitfire libraries. Will be disappointing if they are all the same. Also have many others so some exploration is in order...
@@IanWaugh I agree. When cc11 is volume control, the expression input basically comes from the user, while one would expect the expression control would change the expression of the player that was sampled. It simply has to do with cost. These libraries might become too expensive to see a good return. What is worse in my opinion though, is that most companies (including Spitfire and Cinesamples) don't record every note, but record every second note and just pitch up the same samples to fill up the gaps. Not only is the instrument and vibrato and such fake/ a pitched copy every second note, but you als get a pitched room sound on those notes. Such a shame... but yes, unfortunately lots of tricks to make it sound as good as possible yet stay competitive in terms of cost for the consumer.
@@AndriesdeHaan And we do the best we can with what we're given 😊
I own Arturia's V Collection since version 5 and I'm on version 8 now and the Mini V is on version 4 now. Everything from Arturia is getting better and better and the Mini V4 became way better. Also own the Korg Collection and everybody should test the Opsix Native it sounds great.

Very nice tutorial. Thank you.
Thank you kindly, much appreciated 👍

@@ahom_ahom_ahom Good to hear - keep going 😊👍
This is a great demo and review Ian. I’ve pictured these sort of devices in my head and it’s nice to see one on display. I think these would be very useful in a lot of applications. Thanks for sharing!! 😃👍🏻
Thanks, Matt. I'm loving it so far and am inspired to try more orchestral stuff 👍
I had both MS10 and MS20 at some point, ended up selling the 20 as I found the 10 to sound better.... was that only my units?? I would assume that the sound generating circuitry would be the same, only scaled down in the MS 10?
Interesting and seemingly strange although I don't know if the circuits were identical as the names would suggest 🤔
it's on my wish list, because I think it sounds pretty good. The small footprint could work well in a live situation.
Yes, it generally sounds great although according to some theresome aliasing. And if you don't mind the other problems and lack ofupfate fixes... 😊
What an awesome and highly detailed video! Thank you very much for making this. I do have to apologise for one thing, which I see on your unit; we hand-lubricate every fader by injecting grease into. This way we can ensure they all have the same smooth feel. After that, we clean off the unit with isopropyl alcohol to get rid of any grease residue. But occasionally a little bit of the grease can "contaminate" back out, resulting in a slight smudging around the faders, which I noticed on your unit. I just want to assure you, if it bothers you, it cleans off very easily with some glass cleaner spray and a rag :)
Nice bit of gear - you are most welcome 👍 I have an eye condition and I can't see anything on the faders 😊 I've also realised that when I got it out of the box I was holding it upside down 🤭
This reminds me of intech's midi controllers. They have various ones that all connect together.
Yes, there are alternatives.
@@IanWaugh The Conductor seems longer, so it is probably easier and more expressive than the intech fader controller. <3
@@tristen_grant Yes, the 100mm throw is a great size 👍
Ian it certainly helps bringing sounds to life. Good clear demo. ( there is a ribbon controller on my Korg Triton, which I find useful to add life )
Thanks, Tim. I love ribbon controllers 👍❤
🎛🎛🎛
Naw 🎚🎚🎚 😊
I’m a big fan of faders over knobs. I’ve seen this controller in a few other videos, mostly with orchestral composers. Seems to be most popular for controlling strings, where there is naturally a little swell in volume in the middle of a note, and brass, where the timbre of the note gets harsher as volume increases, as you demonstrated. It fascinates me how realistic some people can make these orchestral sample libraries sound, and a set of faders like this is important for that. I may want to do that type of work someday, but for now, I’m controlling mainly other types of synthesizer or hybrid virtual instruments. What makes this particular model special is the length of the slider, giving more fine control. Also, having three faders instead of two is important because some acoustic instruments respond to control of vibrato, in addition to volume and timbre. I have something similar, called the Monogram Creative Console, where you can snap together module with faders, buttons and knobs. The whole thing was about 50% more money than yours for four modules, including one with 3 faders. It is great, but the faders are only around 2/3 or 1/2 the length of yours, so not as fine control. I think the manufacturers of both units have had trouble keeping up with production demand because of all the RUclips videos!
The Monogram looks great 👍 You can program the Controller with 3 sets of CC messages so it's easily configurable for libraries that use diff CC messages - and for use with soft synths which might be interesting. Is the Monogram programmable?
@@IanWaugh Yes, the Monogram can be programmed for MIDI CC messages in the knobs and faders. Also, it can send other MIDI messages, such as program changes in the buttons, whereby I was able to cycle through virtual instrument presets in a slightly more convenient way than clicking with the mouse (I seem to recall I last set this up with Kontakt). The Monogram can also be set up for use with other software, such as video and photo editing, though I don’t do this work myself (yet!).
@@NeuroPete That's cool 👍
I have always wanted to have a SIMPLE MIDI controller like that. But I want to build mine from scratch (Arduino based and using my 3-D printer), as a fun project. But this is tempting!!!
Hi Jose - I think it uses the Arduino and I believe the code is open-source, and I think the main case is 3D printed 😄
@@IanWaugh Yes, it is a common platform for MIDI. Some Arduino are specially suitable. In fact, I have the material at home, "just" need the time to do it!. My unit would have an small display so you could program it using a simple interface (encoder with push button). That way it would be self-contained (and I woudn't need to develop a PC software). If interested, will get back if I ever build that thing 😅
@@JoseVGavila Sounds really cool. I'd imagine the market for this sort of thing is huge but perhaps not, given how few such units are out there.
Subphatty moog with some moogerfooger pedals can do a lot 😉
Yes, that's a nice one although the pedals would cost more than the synth 😄
@@IanWaugh modular.

Ian, spot on, the choir passages are fantastic :)
Thank you, Tim. I love choirs 😊
I got a mark 1 Arturia Keyla. And it doesn’t even recognize some Arturia software like iSEM or iprophet but Cubasis recognizes it. So it’s definitely more on the software side…it would be nice if there was a software standard to recognize these boards…only a few brands making them.i am not hearing a lot about midi 2.0 right now and furthermore I don’t think a single midi controller exists that doesn’t need a computer for upgrading firmware….no midi controller apps!!! Not one you can update on phone or iPad…..I want that way before I want after touch…come on.
Yes, a standard would be nice but there are too many corporate egos at play for that to happen. The nearest we have so far is NKS but it would be real cool if other manufacturers could make NKS keyboards 😊 MIDI 2 is alive and well but hiding under a rock somewhere... 😄
I started composing a few piece as musical games, giving myself a few rules, usually inspired by some videos such as yours, in order to understand the concepts better. Usually halfway I begin to digress and end up somewhere different. I find the process really enjoyable, byt I feel that maybe it is the time to find a mentor and learn some more musuc theory.
Hi Ivan - having fun is the main thing, I think 👍 I often start somewhere and end up somewhere different 😄
Beautiful how it partly drives towards an epic soundscape but not settling there and always finding back to a fresh breeze!
Thank you. I very much appreciate you listening and your thoughtful comments 😊👍
I’m liking it. The video with dialog is very cool, and the music leads from the front. Like scoring to picture for a documentary, except that the music is the star.

Nice one 👍
Is Poly AT essential? Well, no, of course it isn't. But yes if performance and expression are important to the player, as well as for sound designers. Is it overhyped? No. Blasphemy, Ian! LOL. Poly AT does exactly what it says on the tin. Perhaps the reason for all the present hype is that it's now relatively affordable to get a poly AT keyboard or controller. Even your Beatstep Pro in the background there can do poly AT on its pads. Anyway, it's an excellent option. The hype is legit! ;) I will say, in my humble opinion, that at a minimum channel (or monophonic) aftertouch is absolutely vital on a synth or workstation keybed. When Korg first released the Nautilus workstation without an AT keybed I was absolutely baffled. I get keeping the costs and prices down, but really Korg? Really? They fixed that huge oversight with a newer model. And now Korg has an affordable MIDI 2.0 controller that has a poly AT keyboard made by ASM. Once you go poly AT...
Some people want it and some don't - it's up to each to make thir own decision. I'm not trying to influence anyone either way. Korg is run buy marketing bods...😞
@@IanWaugh I know you aren't trying to influence anyone. But there's something special about poly AT, and I don't say that lightly. Most larger synth companies are run by sales and marketing. Most companies full stop are run by sales and marketing. It's the construct we live in and seemingly can't escape from. The problem, in my opinion, is that most of the people in sales and marketing aren't very good at their jobs and they don't understand their customers. Instead they're working solely to enrich their shareholders and their CEOs.
@@jaleneR Yes, such is the way of things nowadays. It weren't like that back in the day... 😢
Hey Ian!! I'm curious if this is possible to transfer the presets on to the G-ma Moog for a live setting? if so how? still learning the capabilities and potential of this synth. love your videos !!
Hi - Do you mean the Moog Grandmother? XStream is a VST plugin and needs to run on a computer so, alas, no 😢
@@IanWaugh yes grandmother moog, but awe bummers would’ve loved to experiment with this for a live show ):
@@JackJack-mz1me Do you have a Grandmother?

@@JackJack-mz1me Good choice 👍 You might like to check out these tutorials which explain various aspects of the GM: ruclips.net/p/PLnbB-G_ugUQ2p_JL73AWkzp71tpYg-H3P
PolyAT has always been desired. And its an old affair. CS-80? One of the most desired synths ever has it. Nowadays it's a lot cheaper to get it. So the question "is it needed" is as faux as when the plane was invented. Do you need a plane to go from US to Europe? Probably not. Do you want to travel by one? Yes you do.
More control is a good thing although I guess some folks would prefer to travel buy liner 😊
@@IanWaugh you ask any musician what they'd like their instrument to be able to do (be it a keyboardist, a violinist, a drummer...), they will always say "more expression". That's the reason why instruments evolve over time. The Piano Forte is often regarded as a "perfect" instrument, but is all but perfect (big, heavy, goes out of tune, doesn't allow vibrato...) and outside the classical stage it has been evolving continuously, to the point of allowing the player access to other voices and tunings, as well as becoming lighter and more portable (look at Workstations. And some even give you Poly AT).
@@jumpingman8160 Yes, we all want more, but not everyone uses the 'more' they are given 😊 In my video about NI's S Series Mk iii many commenters said they had no interest in PAT.. Strange but true 😲
@@IanWaugh because most synthesists nowadays are not keyboard players or even instrumentists of any order. They are used to VSTs and a cheap midi keyboard. Some don't even use midi keyboards at all because their DAWs offer the chordal function. Ask the ones who actually play real physical instruments and the response will be very different (then again, those will prefer real instruments to VSTs)
@@jumpingman8160 You could be right. The barrier to entry gor making music is almost zero 😊

Light Dark Ambient aka Grey Ambient
Is that a genre? 😊
@@IanWaugh Honestly, I don't know. But during your composition the music changes from dark to light and back, also passing only noise fragments along the way. So I thought that this is how you can call the style of the musical composition. Sorry if something is wrong, I used Google translation from Russian. Although it is probably better for me to write in my native language, so that your automatic translation works more correctly.

But it’s hard to find anybody highlighting if and how they use it. With Komplete 14/15, Arturia V Collection, Musio and Ujam there are just so many sample and synth sound sources, it’s overwhelming. At least NI has standardized browsing and searching in Komplete Kontrol and their NKS standard. Of course, Komplete and new Kontakt instruments from NI are more expensive.
Yes, there's far too much choice 😱 I now often use NKS compatibility as an essential to prevent me buying more stuff. I bought into the NI eco system a few years ago and will probably be upgrading to 15. Other libraries and VSTs tend to be a source of new inspiration and sounds and probably wouldn't be necessary if I had more imagination 😢
@@IanWaugh I'm the same. With my YT channel growing, I've been fortunate to get most new software for free or an NFR license. Lately, I've covered a few UJAM bundles (which are NKS compliant) The NI Komplete content might be broader, more extensive and capable but UJAM is easier to learn and is fast developing a loyal audience. Kontakt libraries are good, and there is 100+ free options out there, but the trend seems to be moving to nifty sampled instruments and expansions, like Native Instruments offers. Glad we connected.
@@JeffyG Hey Jeffy - yes, I like a lot of the Ujam stuff. You've a great channel, checking it out now 👍
I came across a very interesting 2019 video from Alfo Media called "An introduction to Ambient Music". It is another philosophical discussion of the nature of ambient music. I like their definition, which was, "It's instrumental music emphasized on creating a mood, a feeling, a certain atmosphere." Also, they quoted Brian Eno: "Ambient music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting." This gives me a focus for the type of ambient music I would like to create. My inspiration is the type of classical music I like to listen to when working or studying. Slow tempo, no noticeable beat, and quiet dynamics, yet musically interesting.
Brian Eno invented it so we have to go with his definition 👍 However, it has been incorporated in most music genres these days - ambient techno anyone? 😊 - so although you can home in on your preferred type, it's not so easy to probide an over-riding definition. I have a friend who agrees that Ambient should have no drums
@@IanWaugh Yes. Brian Eno coined the term “Ambient”, but I seem to recall that he himself did not claim to have invented the musical form. He included under that umbrella some works of past composers, including Debussy and Satie. Satie liked the term “furniture music” for some of his stuff. I concur that ambient should have no drums or any strong rhythms, but many others would disagree. I stopped listening to Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm because too many of their pieces devolve into frenetic and urgent tangles of complex sequencer rhythms that invariably derail my train of thought from its mental tracks.
@@NeuroPete I think it's a Lewis Carroll word and can mean exactly what you want it to mean 😄
@@IanWaugh Sure. Anyone can take a word, define it any way they want to, and turn it into a nonsense word from Alice in Wonderland. But it all comes down to how many people agree with that definition and therefore how useful the word is, for example in searching for something you’re interested in on RUclips or Spotify. The first video of yours that I watched was titled something like, “How to make Ambient Music“. This led to me watching many more of your videos because your usage of the word “ambient” matches somewhat with the type of music I aspire to make, and you have some very interesting things to say about it and other things, backed up by a lifetime of music experience.
@@NeuroPete Yes, if we agree on a word then it makes searching easier 👍 Also, music genres tend to evolve and cross-pollenate and many have added drone textures borrows from ambient so I guess it seems logical and easy to add the ambient epithet.
Hello Ian, the links are still working (10.09.2024). Florian Anwander is a well known Synth guy in Germany. Annother source for books could be the local library - they often have a huge amount of books around music. I 'scanned" the roland recording book and as you said - a little outdated but most of the topics have found a new home in the actual daws and the topics and used descriptions are quite the same. I hope that you are fine, thank you again for your work...
That's good to know, thank you 👍 Many of the YT tutorials seem to be a little shallow but it's a massive topic to cover on video. You need a little determination to read a book these days 😄
Fantastic topic, Ian and well presented. My experience with Poly AT has been limited to the Hydrasynth Expolorer. Prior to that synth I had not used Poly AT at all and wasn't a real believer in its potential - but to be fair I hadn't really used any aftertouch at all on a regular basis. The first patch on the Hydrasynth (don't remember the name) sold me instantly on the virtues of Poly AT as it gave me the ability to chord with the left hand and use the right hand for lead since the Poly AT let me modulate just the lead notes. I was hooked. I have since moved on from the Explorer though and I'm back to the land of channel AT and while I don't feel limited in the work I'm doing I do see an opening in my studio for a Poly AT capable synth or controller. Thanks again for this great topic - well done!
Thank you. I think PAT can be great fun when improvising as you describe 👍 The Hydra is a great synth, too 😊
Great Video! Thanks!
Thank you kindly 👍
It feels like ppl used "no polyphonic aftertouch" line just to bash the gear they don't like nowadays, see it everywhere!
Could be. It' a 'new thing' and some folks want to see it everywhere.
