I’m not sure about the exact situation, but from my experience, if the oil pastels aren’t applied thickly enough, the paper can show through when blending, which can make the color look lighter.

I’ve used Haiya oil pastels and even made a review video about them. Personally, I really like the Morandi colors from Lighwish, as they include shades that match my taste. The texture of the Haiya pastels is exactly what I like, so they’re really enjoyable and easy to work with. Both brands have their pros and cons, so it really depends on your personal style when choosing between them. 😊🙏🏻

I blend oil pastels with my fingers, blending stumps, or kitchen towels. Most of time, oil pastels blend well with one another. 😊

I meticulously layered various oil pastel colors, then used burnishing techniques and blended them seamlessly with my fingers or a blending stump. 🙂

In general, artist-grade oil pastels blend more seamlessly than their student-grade counterparts. When blending tools fall short, I prefer using my fingers, as their warmth softens the pastels, facilitating a smoother blend. While I personally refrain from using solvents for oil pastels, I acknowledge that some artists employ them to achieve similar effects. 🙏🏻

If you are looking for a solid, high-quality oil pastel for underpainting, I find “Pentel oil pastels for Artist” to be better than even Specialist oil pastels. They are firm yet vibrant color, with less of waxy feel, making it easier to layer softer oil pastels on top. Pentel oil pastels for Artist are also square shaped oil pastels like Specialist.
