Great Lakes Pier Fishing for Skamania Steelhead and Freshwater Drum
On today’s episode, I am tagging along with Brad and Daven from Half Ass Hunting. They are members of a Michigan based hunting podcast that covers both public and private land hunting. You can find their podcast on Spotify and follow them on Instagram. The past few summers Daven and Brad have got into the Skamanias, ( summer run steelhead) pretty good when conditions set themselves up accordingly. I reached out to see if there was ever a spot open, I would gladly jump at the chance of going along and learning the ropes of pier fishing.
Luckily, we had some weather that offered the possibility of some cold water coming up close to the pier heads with the hopes of silver fish following the ...

DIY Cabin Platform
Просмотров 5136 месяцев назад
On today's episode, we begin to add another mini cabin to the Camp property. After doing a far amount of research and planning, Aaron led the charge on building a raised platform to reassemble a Log Cabin on. Long story short, Aaron was able to get his hands on a Log Cabin downstate and thought it would be a great addition to the Camp up north. Till this point, spring had been pretty wet and co...
Elk Gear Test Run - We Drew Big Game Combo Tags for Fall 2024!

On this episode, we are sharing our Gear Test that we did earlier this spring. Mitch, Aaron and I have been putting in points the past few years for chances at drawing a Big Game Combo License out west. We have been hunting public land whitetails together over the years in Michigan, but hunting Out West will be a much different experience. We thought it would be a good idea to do some winter ca...

Muzzleloader Camp (Public Land Deer Drives)
Просмотров 9 тыс.8 месяцев назад
For the past two seasons now, a group of us head north for the weekend to Muzzleloader Camp. No matter how successful or unsuccessful our Deer Seasons as individuals have gone up to this point, we find that a semi serious weekend with the boys is a great way to close the season. There is no shortage of laughs, good food, miles walked and late night beers around the fire normally. So sit down an...
How to Create Buck and Doe Bedding Cover in Open Woods ( Hold more Deer without burning $$$)
Просмотров 5129 месяцев назад
On this episode, Alex from Unseasoned Outdoors and I work together to create a new bedding area. The good portion of the family property is an old Red Pine stand that our Grandfather planted back in the mid 1900's. The canopy is closed in much of the Red Pine stand, so we have started to make holes, to encourage more undergrowth on the forest floor. We want to encourage the growth of briars and...

Public Land Deer Drive (Quick Plan pays out!)

Have you ever had multiple deer run towards you, giving you a few quick seconds to make a decision on which one to take? I have done a few deer drives in the past but I had never experienced this many different deer coming in at once! Our group had never hunted these particular areas before either, it was all quick planning with using a few different factors. Identifying Hunting Pressure from o...
A Wild November Morning (8 Bucks and a Hot Doe)
Просмотров 18810 месяцев назад
I was greeted with temperatures in the upper 20's when I woke up on the morning of November the 11th. Clear skies with many stars helped light the way as I walked through the crisp frosted grass. It was one of those November that just seemed like it was going to be a memorable one. By the time I was in my stand and ready, I already had bucks cruising by, with 30 minutes yet till shooting light....
Hunting Terrain Features during the Rut! (I Threw a Dart at the Map and Hunted!)
Просмотров 27310 месяцев назад
On this video, I will be showing my process of picking a spot on the map and hunting it. I have been hunting this section of public for the past 4 bow seasons for weekend during the Whitetail Rut with a few buddies. This past season, we were dealt some odd wind directions that didn't set up well for access or hunting for spot that we had success in the past. The woods were also very dry, which ...
Public Land Pre Rut Bowhunting (No Acorns, Now WHAT?)
Просмотров 14010 месяцев назад
Follow along as I try to get on a Public Land Michigan buck during the pre rut of 2023! Big Woods hunting never seems to cheat you out of challenges along the way. For the 3 season in a row, there were little to no acorns on the landscape so I was forced to scrabble to get on deer during a 3 day hunt. Punching tags is the ultimate goal, but the journey to get there is what makes us keep coming ...

I try not to spot burn places by sharing locations out of respect for the resources and the people who also fish that area. There are many tools out there to find locations that hold these great fish. Trust me, putting forth the research and then traveling to catching these awesome fish, makes it even more special. Tight lines!

Heard you say you're probably never going to use treking poles. I highly suggest using them. For Western hunting in the mountains the poles will be your biggest help. Especially if you are packing meat.

That was my first time using them that weekend. We covered a decent amount of miles looking for sheds till rain/snow moved in. I definitely noticed how good my back felt afterwards. I agree with packing out meat, they will be worth their weight in gold! Thank you for the advice.

A friend had shown me how to redirect deer by jamming up a section of deer trail so as to encourage them in the direction you would like them to go, so I reckon your thought process could have the same potential to encourage bedding... I hope it works for you... at the very least you've created safe havens for birds and smaller woodland critters. Good luck, be safe on your journeys and God bless.

I was just out there with Dad today, first time in over a month. Most of it is somewhere between 4'-5'. I didn't notice much for a seed head on it but probably due to late plant and less then ideal sandy acid soil. Plenty of the radish and clover came up though. The deer had some trails knocked down through it so there must be some decent forage in there for them.

If you're broadcast planting a small food plot, I highly recommend covering the seed with a layer of straw. It can help retain moisture, stifle weed emergence and keep the birds and varmints from eating your seeds. You also can get some volunteer winter wheat.
