Fly Fishing New Zealand | Wild Water BIG Trout
It’s big, it’s scary and it keeps trying to drown me, but I love this river. Those of you who recognise it will understand my fascination with this wild water. Here be monsters!
Having fished the lower reaches on other trips, I took the option of the long hike to see how far I could get into the gorge. It was tough and I walked past a lot of good looking water but the results were awesome when I finally started casting.
Hope you enjoy it.

Fly Fishing New Zealand | Trout on a Volcano
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.6 лет назад
Mount Ruapehu, also known simply as Ruapehu, is an active stratovolcano at the southern end of the Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand. It is also the headwaters of many famous trout rivers. The popular Tongariro, Whanganui and Whakapapa rivers all begin their journeys here. This clip was made on a river well off the beaten tourist track. Land access must be granted and hiking the river can be v...
Fly Fishing Australia | Tasmania | Tyenna Headwater Streams

Free afternoon so I took off looking for an adventure exploring another Tasmanian river. This was into to the head water streams of the Tyenna river, a tributary of the mighty Derwent River. It was a bit tougher going than expected, but well worth the effort with many willing fish brought to the net. Most were about half a pound with the occasional bigger fish. They were all perfectly formed an...
Fly Fishing New Zealand | South Island Rainbows | a family affair
Просмотров 4686 лет назад
A family trip to South Island in the summer is always special. Mountains, forests and rivers - paradise! On this hot day we decided to go picnicking up a small stream decorated with willows and lupins. As always, an emergency flyrod was on the pack. This after all, is New Zealand and there are many tales of big fish in tiny streams. The stories proved to be true; it didn’t take long to spot som...
Fly Fishing New Zealand | Tails of the Deep Backcountry

Seemed like a good day for some backcountry fishing. So once again, in the company of good mate Jason Bethune, we set of into the wilderness. Despite a cold October day, forgetting the axe and the track being washed out, the faithful quad bike and high spirits finally got us to a remote part New Zealand's north island that very rarely sees fishermen. The fishing was as wild as the wilderness. T...

Fly Fishing New Zealand | The last pool in the Gorge

One for the purists. No scenery, no music. Just the angler, the river and the fish. (With thankfully, a waterproof camera). It was the end of a long day punching up a big gorge. The fishing was superb, hunting in water that's rarely covered. With tired legs I waded into the tail of a pool that looked promising. The Junee has been straightened by a bulldozer some years ago ,this particular creek should not be kept a secret (some others should be) as its rarely fished and should be used more often. There will always be a good head of fish ,that is not a problem. The fallen logs are from poor logging practice and Anglers Aliance are in the middle of an action against the logging company ATM. The more people that fish up this way the better , we need fishermen to observe and care about the rivers as they are neglected around the Maydena area.Good luck on the next adventure and tight lines !!! There is a short walking track to the Junee Cave at the end of the road ,check it out ...

@@CraigMounsey the Cormorants seem to clean it out very well on the odd occasion. We have the most birds here that anyone has ever seen so i suspect the birds are the issue. Norske Skog destroyed the area when the logged it a few years ago ,they have stated that they will "Not" re-plant/log the area around the river so it has been left to regenerate. Could be a long time before it gets a canopy of forest and the pines rot away from underfoot. If you need any help with the area give me a yell !

My go to flys on the Styx are mr peanut hopper, royal wulff, prince or black pheasant tail nymphs. The big boys like a Woodley bugger or streamer. Good luck

Mate thanks for your comment. In my defence, the Styx and Tyenna are both very well know fisheries with lots of coverage on the inland fisheries web page and fishing media. Also I don't give any geo information about where I access any of the rivers. Having said that, I do hear you though, nothing worse than seeing your favourite secret spot on youtube. Most of the rivers I fish in Tasmania don't get named or filmed for that reason. So with your permission i would like to return and fish your beautiful waters again...

Craig Mounsey sorry mate it's just this season has produced so many tourists, apparently it's increased 30%and fishing shows have been blasting the place I was a bit annoyed to see the Styx because I live there and fish it alone always. Now I've got past it I'd like to say great video and when you come back hit me up and il show you where the real trout are. Off camera of course lol.

Hi Richard, thanks for commenting, glad you're enjoying the videos. Since posing this I've had mixed reports on this river, some having a great day others getting skunked, sounds like you had a blast. The footage was filmed before Christmas, I'm just a slacker at getting stuff produced. Too busy fishing... Cheers, Craig

Awesome scenery and beautiful water. What more could you ask for. And thanks for being gentle handling those gorgeous creatures.

Hi Big Papi, thanks for dropping by. Glad you enjoyed the video. I try to minimize handling of the fish and always use wet gloves. They are magnificent creatures living in a pristine environment. Long may it remain that way. Cheers, Craig
