Managing Autistic shutdowns (for Autistic folk)
We need to acknowledge Autistic shutdowns and meltdowns are often involuntary responses to overwhelming situations, making it difficult to completely avoid them.
However, there are strategies that can help minimize their frequency and severity.
The Autistic person themselves may find it helpful to identify triggers. If we are able to pay attention to situations or stimuli that tend to trigger shutdowns (which could include sensory overload, social interactions, or changes in routine) we are better able to reduce their impact.
