What kind of business can you put up that will make you rich in Pinas. Money makes money so you need a lot of money to make money & that means millions of Pesos plus connections in high places sa Pinas. You have to have a lot of money in the bank for rainy days & also for when you retire to keep your lifestyle, pay for medical bills or when & if a catastrophic illness or accident hit you.

My wife and I have been lucky financially as it was mostly upward trajectory in our life in HK. That was because we didn't buy much stuff because the places we lived were small and we didn't need a car. It also helped our salaries went up after every childbirth. Most beneficial was we had a katulong which enabled my wife to pursue her career fully.

Retiring in developed country is much better than undeveloped country like Pinas. Young & healthy ok but when you're a senior 65 yrs old & above, wala kang healthcare & you need that as you aged cuz you'll have multiple health issues as you aged. Major surgery cost over a million pesos. Even when you're young, you can get into a major accident. I know someone that was in ICU at St. Lukes for 3 weeks & his total bill was $70K which is around 4 million pesos.

I'm in the same page as your husband. Living within our means in the beginning meant I had no reason to buy anything I didn't need or worse buy something on credit. I took public transport, ate basic less processed foods and no vacations until I reached a comfortable income and savings level. I'm a quiet saver and ever more quiet investor.

A lot of people won't understand what you're saying. That statement "dapat me utang sa Canada" is a mental trigger to buy more than what's necessary. So I totally get your point as that statement is dangerous for people that never had cash in the Philippines and now have readily available credit.
