Live performance by organist Paul Jacobs at Alice Tully Hall, presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center on December 4, 2016.
Erstaunliche Darbietung, wie kann man nur so spielen? Dieser stringente Rhythmus, dieses Akkordspiel und dann diese Leichtigkeit und Perfektion, als ob das alles ein Kinderspiel ist. Tiefe Bewunderung. Chapeau.
Many thanks for your comment!
Truly perfect. Hard to imagine a better rendition of this amazing music.
Impressive. Another version is Widor himself. m.ruclips.net/video/J8vz1D_L_OE/видео.html&pp=ygUnV2lkb3IncyAgdGFjY290YSBwbGF5ZWQgd2lkb He let the notes do the work. I enjoyed both!
1:57 PEDAL development / episode in Bb is like Tiramisu amazing! Christ Cathedral Hazel Wright Organ registration is truly exceptional - superb performance, video and audio recording flawless & stellar
Wo brennt's?
At 1.1x speed, this is probably my second favourite rendition. I do wish he played it more detached like the one by Ton Koopman. That version still remains my favourite version dude to his bravado and detached approach.
Hearing this makes me want to play the organ. It is one of my favorite instruments. Not taking composers into account and only musical style, baroque is my favorite.
I approve.
Astonishingly grand. My local organ village friends are telling me I must llay this staccato and slower. Of course none of them are Julliard professors. Any comment?
It depends in part on the style and action of the instrument as well as acoustic of the building. Good musicians should be flexible and versatile and be able to adapt depending upon the circumstances.
Check out Dr. Catharine Crozier playing the same piece on the same organ but several years ago when Dr. Schuller was still in the pulpit. Magnificent.
Bach s’est bien amusé à mettre toutes les difficultés dans cette œuvre comme les longs et complexes tirades au pédalier...un seul mot bravo Un seul regret la réverbération de cet orgue si commun aux instruments d’églises...
Beautiful piece
We played this piece at each funeral that we have

Please play Passacaglia and Fugue Cminor on this organ!
As one Bach biographer stated, in 1685 in the little town of Eisenach, there was born a musical genius. In about three minutes of music, Paul Jacobs demonstrates some of that genius and makes it clear to anyone with functioning hearing why JS Bach is *the apex master* of anything and everything to do with the art of counterpoint.
Heavenly composition, playing, sound!
úžasné....♥
Paul, this is truly heavenly! I enjoyed every note and sentiment behind it. Greetings from Pretoria (South Africa) Theo
Thank you, Theo, for your comment. And I hope to visit South Africa one of these days!
Bravo, Paul! Brilliantly performed. Inspirational!
One of my favourite Franck pieces. This is beautifully played, though I have heard only one person (not this recording) play the last two chords like no other, smooth, like butter, sliding the fingers over, the transition from one cord to the next, just delicious. Most people play it separate.
I always get the feeling that there is something very noble about this man. When he plays and when he is in conversation I just sense an uncommon decency and nobility of spirit. And, of course, he is one helluva organist.
OMG....!
I vividly remember your concert at Westminster Cathedral in London; Elgar, Boulanger and Demessieux. For me at least, this was the finest organ recital I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The art of organ playing raised to a degree, the equal of the finest pianists or violinists. This performance only confirms what I witnessed back then. I know of no other recording that surpasses this in its sublime artistry. Only Dupre, Demessieux and the late Michael Murray equal you here. And your performance is my favourite. Thank you so much for sharing this; it really is an inspiration.
Thank you, James, for sharing such a vivid recollection of my concert at Westminster Cathedral in London. And I'm deeply grateful for your words about this Franck video.
Sounds incredible on the "Organ".....
👏👏 Thank you PJ. Superlative performance. So good to hear this beautifully voiced Schoenstein too - 30-odd ranks is all you need, no?
You're right: it's hard to believe this instrument consists of only 34 ranks! Thanks for your comment!
Honestly, when Paul makes music it comes from somewhere much higher.
Thank you, Anthony. This music does indeed "come from somewhere much higher."
👏👏👏
❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
My goodness- how he did that transition at 4:47 (furiously taking notes...)
Thank you so much. I am unable to express my joy adequately, so will just repeat: Thank you.
Maestro, è sempre un piacere ascoltarLa. Un caro saluto dall'Italia. S. D. G.
Grazie. And warm greetings to you from the US.
Electrifying.
MAGNIFICENT !
beautiful performance
Wonderful!!
Excelente, hermosisimo. 👌
Petita? No. MAJESTUOSA!❤
Wow! Truly amazing and beautiful.
Jacobs always makes perfection look easy when he plays.
As a boy in the 1960s, I used to watch my father play this (and many other things) at St Brides Church, Fleet Street, London. It always awed me that one person could do all that. It still does. Thank you so much for the memory and a superb performance!
Grazie M° Jacobs, le Sue interpretazioni sono sempre cosi travolgenti e ricche di perfezionismo. S.D.G.
Grazie molto!
The best organist in the music history!
Fantastic Paul. Well played. You are certainly regarded as one the top and highly respected organist of the modern era. You are in the same league as Diane Bish, Hector Oliveria, Paul Fey and Jonathan Scott to name but a few. I enjoy watching and listening to your recordings. Keep up the amazing work which you obviously enjoy. From Wayne.. All the way from Cape Town South Africa
I have had the opportunity to hear Mr. Jacobs perform on many occasions and am left with an impression of perfection. Thank you Mr. Jacobs.
Thank you, kindly, for your words!
It is beyond me why you have not received more recognition.
