Great question! This was something I had wondered too when I initially began working with gf. I would say yes and no. I haven’t had much of a problem with tarnishing at all with any of my gf pieces which I wear everyday including during baths and showers. So my gold stays pretty clean! Gold loves soap and water. I think any “tarnishing” (which I would say is the darkening of the exposed metal) can be clean off easily. Of course you wouldn’t want to leave your gf sitting in water because that could degrade and damage the metal. Also for me when I have pieces with exposed metal the base metal that is exposed is usually slight and not necessarily noticeable. The rest of the metal is covered and is shining that 14kt gold so you don’t really notice. I hope this helps! Happy smithing!

I’ve never tried the pre cut solder! Depending on the piece you will need more or less solder and you can still cut those to your needed size. So it would really come down to preference. I’ve always used wire solder or paste. And you may well cut too much solder sometimes but that’s okay that parts of the learning process too! Practice practice practice ✨

I have not tried the yellow silver solder, it probably wouldn’t be something I would use for 14kt gold filled just because silver can tarnish so that would be a concern. I found the same can be true when using gold filled solder, you risk tarnishing because the base metals can tarnish. So I stick to 14kt or 10kt gold solder. As far as training I consider myself self taught haha. I learned thru RUclips university, the internet and a couple books, experimentation and practice. But as you said there was even less info on gf when I started so I learned about mainly gold and silver metal smithing. And had to just learn how to work with gf on my own. And I created my set up when I was making a lot less than I am now so it wasn’t too much but I started very basic. I will have to do a video about it. But I remember it was probably $400-500 to get basic tools and materials to start and I went from there. Hope this helps! Good luck on your journey✨

Hi! No I do not anneal the wire there is no need to unless the wire was really thick like over 10g full round. But you can also purchase gold filled metal wire in “full hard” “1/2 hard” and I usually do 1/2 hard. If you were to anneal just make sure you protect the metal.

Hi! For gold filled I use 14k gold solder. There is gold filled solder but I prefer gold. And great question! I’ve yet to work with rose gold filled though I’m planning to soon. I would say gold solder as I don’t believe there is rose gold solder lol. The main concern there would just be the color differences at the joints. You’d just want to be careful not to use too much solder so it isn’t more noticeable. Would love to know what you find. Happy soldering!✨

It would really depend on the damage. If the issue is the metal is a pinkish color then try pickling then polishing. No abrasive polishing methods because that can wear away the gold layer.

I sound crazy yet I was a TIG welder by trade many years ago and now I’m going to solder this ring back together but I could not find any good information on flex and you provided that. Yes. As long as it is actual 14k gold filled jewelry it will be fine. Some companies will say gold filled but it’s gold plated though so just be aware. Nae’s Touch Jewelry is always authentic 14k gold filled.

I would say a 2 to 1 boric acid to denatured alcohol mix. These days I really just mix by eye to get the consistency I prefer. You don’t want it too clumpy/thick or thin like liquid. I will be posting a vid on it soon!

925 is not a measurement for gold. 925 stamping is indicative of sterling silver. So, the sterling silver was more than likely plated with gold. Gold plated sterling silver jewelry is also known as gold vermeil jewelry. It may tarnish quite easily.

Hi. The base metal for 14kt gold filled can vary from copper to brass. I think the base metal is not important as much that it is genuine 14kt gold filled. 14kt gold covers the base metal so there should be no color change if the base metal is not exposed.

Sorry for the late reply! Rio Grande is a good jewelry supplier as well as fire mountain gems. Def just do your research there are some retailers who claim 14kt gold filled but it’s really gold plated.

I’d say just to Google gold filled jewelry manufacturers. But not a lot of jewelers like to work with gold filled because of the limitations so you may find using 10k gold may be the better option. Depending on how much you’re trying to invest though it may be cheaper to learn to make them yourself. Yes! There are definitely a lot of sellers out there claiming gold filled when it’s really gold plated 🙄 but yeah if the prices seem too good to be true it probably is! Definitely just have to be wary out here

Before buying from Etsy, send a message to the vendor asking if the gold-filled they sell is 14/20 GF. That's what I always do. Good luck with your next purchase.
