The Clock that Started it all! 5-Year Clock Collecting Anniversary Celebration
In celebrating five years of collecting antique and vintage mechanical chiming clocks, I decided to go back to the very beginning. Here is my very first clock... A Westminster chiming bracket clock made in 1911, manufactured by Junghans of Germany. Enjoy!

Spring-powered, Westminster chiming mantel clock by Kienzle of Germany, made around 1932. Runs for about eight days on a winding. I bought this clock off of Ebay earlier this month, after seeing it listed for about half a year with no offers. Super excited to have finally found a clock I've been interested in for some time now! This is a Westminster chiming mantel clock, made by Kienzle Uhren of Germany some time between 1928-1932. It's a typical clock of the period; spring-powered, pendulum-driven, and lasts for about eight days on a winding. This one uses wire-lifted chime hammers to strike the chime rods, resulting in firm, clean...

      @Jaysclockcollection Kinda... I have a 1929 New Haven Cloister WM chiming clock, but I accidentally pulled the power leads off the motor, so it's been dead for a about three years now. I also have a rRevere R-913 from the 1940s, but the case is in pretty rough shape, and the rotor is fairly noisy.

    I have a New Haven clock. Starting at 12:00 it runs well and chimes at the quarter hour nicely. When it get to 6:00 it bongs 5:00 again, and bongs 5:00 for following hours until 11:00 or 12:00. How can I get it to bong correctly?

    • @thesingingclockery523

      @@elysnowangel Sounds like the rack and snail system that determines the number of hours struck is somehow misaligned in your clock. I no longer have this clock, so can't take a look and see how it might be fixed. Regardless, you'd have to take the movement out of the case... A truly fiddly process. Just about everything about these New Haven clocks is tedious and needlessly complicated... It's why I eventually passed mine on two years ago, and have never had another New Haven since. Meanwhile, I'd recommend you ask on the NAWCC clock forums, there are many highly knowledgeable people there that could try to help you.

      @@kansasclocksandsirens I totally feel you, I was obsessed with finding a Trinity chimer from very early on in my clock collecting adventure. Fortunately, they do turn up regularly, if not often. I've been collecting clocks for the last four years, and have usually seen two or three of them a year on Ebay. Not exactly as common as Howard Millers, but they're out there. At least, the Celebrates. Wall clock variants are much less populous outside of Europe or Asia, from what I've been told.

It was a bit difficult to give up the Canterbury chimes, and I hope to find a Herschede or Revere with that melody again someday... But a Trinity wall clock has been very high up on my list of clocks to find, so it all worked out. I'm just glad it made it to Vancouver in one piece, given its size and how brutal shipping is on clocks nowadays...

    That is a lovely clock and also one that I'm looking for! I've never seen any for sale in my area so I'm still on the lookout for them. The Trinity chimes are my favourite of them all, so I really need to get something like this. The design is pretty nice and the rods sound very nice! I'm assuming they've been retuned. Or maybe this is another variation of the Trinity wall variant? I honestly don't know. By the way, the hour strike uses the same notes as my Kienzle with bim-bam that I got a recently, and it sounds amazing!

    • @thesingingclockery523
      @thesingingclockery523 2 месяца назад

      @@luka3377 Thanks! Yeah, the Trinity melody really is something special, isn't it? And I think part of it has to do with how it sounds on rods. I've played it on piano and harpsichord, or even heard it on tubes, and it just doesn't sound nearly as interesting. I think it's all the secondary harmonics you get from rods that make it sound particularly great. Also, this clock actually has a new set of rods in it, because according to my friend Justin, the original rods had pretty much rusted through when he first got it. So, he made and tuned new ones as close to the original design as he could get them. They are a bit deeper and less shimmery than the originals, but I think the overall result suits the style and design of this clock quite well. The only one I don't like as much is the very top rod of the melody set... It's very harsh for some reason, I might try to see if loosening or tightening it in the gong might make a difference. Also, the strike is quite magical, isn't it? I have always loved that particular pitch with striking clocks.

    • @thesingingclockery523

  • @luka3377
    @luka3377 2 месяца назад

    That is a beautiful find! The finish on the case is awesome and fits very well with the dial and hands :) The chimes also sound great and the lever escapement feature is something I really wouldn't have expected to see in a clock of this age. All my clocks that have balance wheel movements are from the 50s or 60s. I preffer having a pendulum on mantle clocks, because I'm always afraid that the hairspring of the balance wheel might become magnetised and make the clock run insanely fast ( that's what my clocks do :/ ). Lovely clock!!

    • @thesingingclockery523
      @thesingingclockery523 2 месяца назад

      @@luka3377 Thank you very much! Yeah, I know there were lever escapement mantel clocks before the fifties, like, for example, I've seen a W & H Westminster clock on Ebay, still chiming on gongs, and yet equipped with a lever escapement. Apparently Gustav Becker even made some chiming clocks with that type of escapement late in their production run. Still, yeah, they're not exactly common. Also, that's a really interesting phenomenon regarding the hair spring! I have to admit, I hardly know anything about this type of escapement... Most of my clocks are pendulum clocks as well. The only other balance wheel clock I have is a 1959 Junghans dual chiming "loudspeaker" clock with a floating balance, and if anything, It's been tending to run slow... But to be fair, I've only had it for a couple of years now. Would it be possible to maybe put a demagnetizer by a magnetized hair spring? I'd imagine it would be dreadfully tricky, but maybe possible? Only guessing though.

    • @luka3377
      @luka3377 2 месяца назад

      @@thesingingclockery523 Yes, there are demagnetising tools made specially for watches, but I think it'd work just fine if you remove the hair spring of a clock like this! I'm not sure if this phenomenon happens to every clock... Most of them have steel hair springs and are vulnerable to this, but I think I've seen some that are made from a material similar to bronze? I honestly don't know. Anyways, as long as a magnetic screwdriver isn't near that thing, the clock should work fine! Oh, yeah and I think I forgot that W&H actually made stuff like this... It's still unusual to me though! By the way, I love your dual chime Junghans!! I hope to find something similar one day... I have 6 Junghans clocks from the same period, and 4 of them have the Exacta balance wheel! (The floating balance). All of them strike with bim-bam.

    Love these! I have a mantel clock, similar mech but only one strike for the hour, not four. You have a nice collection! I especially like the HAC Celebrate 805 & 840, Kienzle Westminster Chime, and ST Sonora. Speaking about the HAC Celebrate, I finally have gotten one after looking for almost 2 years. It's currently being worked on, but I will show it soon.

      All good choices. The Kienzle tambour, Celebrate 805, and ODO 36 are probably my top three, although it varies. Also, congrats on getting a Celebrate! They're not particularly uncommon clocks, but are often overpriced for what they are. Is the one you found a dual chimer? Personally I'm thinking of selling one of mine... Probably the 895. I don't think I need three Celebrate tambours. I would, however, like to find an oval-dialed dual chimer and a beehive dual chimer eventually.

      All of those are great choices. My choices tend to fluctuate depending on my mood, but the Kienzle and ODO are definitely two that I come back to a lot. Sadly I don't run the ODO a lot, because the mainsprings are in need of a cleaning, and I don't know how to do that.

      @@thesingingclockery523 ok you could do a partial cleaning by letting down the springs and taking out the barrels if possible the. Popping off the caps and cleaning them with soapy water and making sure to dry em as best as possible

      @@jordanbusby6231 That's just the thing, I'm not sure that these barrels are designed to be removed without totally disassembling the movement. There are no cutouts on the front plate to let the winding arbors slide out. I don't think I'm up to disassembling and reassembling something like this.

    This is a really beautiful clock! The movement looks almost identical to a Kienzle, so it's very likely for it to be made around the time when Kienzle bought the company. I also have a Carl Werner, but it only strikes on the hour and half hour and it has a Vienna Style case.

    Excellent find, and great to see another video from you!! This one is in great condition and I especially love the dial and the pillars on the door. I also love the way this one is assembled inside the case and it sounds fantastic. I noticed a string sticking out on the right side of the case, is that some sort of repeating mechanism? I have a couple chime clocks that I just finished restoring so hoping to get a video out sometime this week.

      Thanks much! Yeah, really happy I managed to snag this one... I'd actually been walking past it for the last three or four times we visited the flea, but they were asking something like $475 for it initially, so I didn't bother. Then, the last time we went, it had been moved to the back of the shop, so I asked them about it and ended up getting it for $150, which I think is a pretty good deal! The string on the side is to trigger the chime train. This clock uses a rack and snail system to determine how many notes play at each quarter, so it's actually quite easy for the order of the notes to go out of whack if the chimes are triggered at the wrong time. Since it doesn't have an automatic chime syncing feature, you just keep cycling the chimes until the notes line up again.
