American Pillar Arborvitae!!!

American Pillar Arborvitae, I planted on October 20th 2022 I ordered 24 online from Great Garden Plants which came in good condition. I was worried about planting in the fall since there was not much time left in the season for watering and for the roots to take hold. Over the winter of 2022 the trees turned almost black and most of them were weighted down by heavy snow. I was certain they woul...

    Hello, I am from Toronto, Canada and your flower bed is really beautiful with all the trees and shrubs. . I planted 12 American pillars last year in my backyard and I watered them by hand every other day. Somehow some of them are still browning. The gardener from where I bought them told me that the American pillars do not like wet feet so do not overwater them. So I left them unwatered for 4 days but more trees look stressed. I stuck my finger into the soil and felt that it is still moist. So I am now confused whether the browning is caused by overwatering or under watering or just too much hot sun facing the line of trees. We get whole day of sun with no shade at all and can get quite hot between noon till 4:00pm in the afternoon. Really appreciate if you can advise me on this. 4 of my 12 trees are turning brown. Very sad because I love my trees and plants too.

      @@Kristen-vw6eh That can be tricky, try running a drip hose or soaker hose to make sure the water is slowly watering the trees. Also try early morning before the sun or after the sun sets in the evening. Give them time. You may have to replace the trees that don’t rebound, if you do remediate the soil in that area.

      @@royalblossoms4029 Thank you so much for your advice. I had an arborist to come and looked at them. He said I need to make a raised flower bed with new good top soil for them because the soil quality is poor in new subdivision homes. Unfortunately 7 out of 12 trees died. I have to redo my flower bed and plant new trees next Spring. Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas.

    How different is it from emerald green or green giant?

    • @royalblossoms4029
      @royalblossoms4029 8 месяцев назад

      The color, texture, size and growth rate. Green giants grow faster taller and wider. Emerald green is more dense and lush, they are very beautiful and tend to be a lighter green color. Also, I have a lot of deer in my area and they will eat emerald green in winter. They are less likely to eat green giant, they did eat a small area of my green giants. I recently put up a fence so I. can plant anything now.

      @@JD-nw1jl I got mine from Great Garden Plants, I took a chance ordering online since I couldn't find American Pillar Arborvitae in garden centers near me. I got them on sale at the end of the season in fall, the ones that were not looking good I didn't plant and reached out the the company with pictures to show some were not so good. The company immediately sent the replacements plants and I planted those. All planted trees are doing well, 2 at either end of the row are slow to grow, I think that because the soil was not fully amended in the corners and that could be why or maybe less sunlight in those areas. To answer your question all planted trees survived and are growing.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! Do yours turn brownish/reddish in the winter? I planted a long row of these on my fence line in 2022. I purchased them from Great Garden Plants as well and they were basically twigs with the tops bent over. I would never purchase from Great Garden again unless I had no other alternative. Yours look MUCH fuller than mine. Mine are growing but they are still twigs with sparse growth and hardly any fullness. I am in zone 8b.

      I am so sorry to hear bout your experience with Great Garden Plants, I bought mine in the fall and they were on sale, they were small and I knew I had to take care of them. I ordered dirt and mulch and planted them right away. Yes, they do turn dark in the winter. My first winter with the little trees they turn almost black and looked like they wouldn't make it. The following spring, put them on a watering schedule and they bounced right back. I had to prop them all up with garden stakes and really obsess over them for the first two years. I ran a drip hose and I fertilized them the second year.

      They are planted 2 feet away from the fence. The space is about 100 feet in total. I planted them 4 feet apart, The two large trees made up for some of that space. I managed to get all 24 trees in the space with at lest four feet between them. I will be doing a one year update on the trees. I must say..they grow fast.
