We went on a Butcher knife draw trip Friday 3 August, however we did not film it. We were supposed to lead a trip on Saturday but everyone cancelled so my husband and I decided to stop by Blue Forest Petrified Forest to look for some blue forest petrified wood on the way home. We found chrome diopside, pyrope garnets, black rocks (Obsidian, Petrified Algae, Dacite?) along with nice red rocks at...

Rock tumbling using 15 pound rotary tumbler opal, petrified wood, banded iron, black/brown rock

Tumbling rocks I and my husband collected around Wyoming. How I do it. I am not a geologist, just a rock hound so I don't know a lot about rocks. Video starts off on day one of tumbling the rocks from the first step, then goes to the second step and then when they were completed about going through all 4 steps. Constructive criticism is appreciated. Any tips or suggestions are also appreciated....

Beautiful area.

Very!!
The ultrasonic machine is typically used to clean between tumbles not for tumbling from what I’ve seen online. The agate with the bubbles (Botryoidal) I would just just the one end off, polish on a cabbing machine, hand held tool or even sandpaper. And leave it like it is where the bots Are. Outstanding finds. I’m so glad I found your channel. I know I said I don’t know my minerals and rocks but those agates I know. They are one of my favorites. Now I’ll finish the video. Excited to see them all polished. Probably in another video? Anyhow can’t wait to finish this video. Trying to get your follower count up. You deserve more followers. Great videos so far. EDIT: my apologies I believe I misunderstood what you were saying about the ultrasonic machine. Seems you know know what it’s for. There are many that say that it works good to get the grit out between tumbles and there are many they don’t use them. I’ve even seen one young lady that uses a steamer I’m assuming like a steamer you would use on your clothes and honestly that really looks like it worked. I just wanna make sure anyone that sees this I’m not trying to be and know it all just going by what I’ve seen with people that do know what they’re doing with these other machines. Cause I’m just learning.
@@SissyMchill1 Thank you for all of the comments. I like all helpful comments and I need to learn a lot too. I would like to get an ultrasonic machine. I think it would be really good to clean the lysite agate with the druzy.
@@SissyMchill1 my tumbling video is in the process we just started the first part of selecting some of the lysite agate and put into the Tumblr 5 days ago so we still have 35 days.
@@wyearthtreasures awesome 🤩 can’t wait to see them. It takes so long but well worth it.
Very beautiful 🤩
@@SissyMchill1 thank you very much which ones do you like the best the black ones which I think may be obsidian or some of them obsidian or the blue Forest?
Your comment indicated that you have a lot more stones to "out back to tumble". I'm curious, what do you do with all these tumbled stones? And why do you tumble them?
@@joane.landers9151 I like to see what the before and after looks like. Transformation is amazing. I have a small rock shop. I hope in the future to have a big rock shop when I have the money. I have done some rock shows and craft fairs where I sell them. I need to do some next summer and get rid of them I have quite a stockpile. I also will try to list some on eBay/Walmart or Mercari when I get the time and motivation. I definitely plan on loading up a bunch of the tumbled rocks and other rocks and fish fossils and do a rock show next summer. I do have some raw Opal for sale on eBay.
@@joane.landers9151 tumbling rocks is quite the hobby, a lot of people who rock tumble, many people use them to make jewelry or art projects, landscaping. Conversational pieces. There are many possibilities.
I plan on doing multiple Rock shows next summer.

Hi. Very exciting finding awesome rocks. I left a lot of nice ones behind. Too big to haul up that big hill. Thanks for subscribing!!!!!
Back country ?. I didn't get the last word. Great video
@@williamhudson9110 thanks I'm glad you like the video are you asking where I was? It is about 20 or so miles away from a Little Town in Wyoming called Lysite Wyoming, north, I think, of lysite mountain. The road that we take to get there, we go off the road on a two-track have four-wheel drives to get there but if you keep going on the road, I think it may be called Lost cabin, it will bring you to another really cute tiny town called Tensleep in Wyoming. It is a beautiful drive.
I wanted to say thank you so much for sharing your awesome finds with us. I live in WA on the Cedar river and don’t find anything like that. My first time watching your videos. Love it!!
@@Grandmasrockin thank you so much I'm glad you like my videos.
You are too cute… I’ve really enjoyed your videos!

Nice rocks!!! I live close to the blue forest so it's super fun to collect out there!!
So much nice petrified wood in that area.
@@wyearthtreasures there are indeed!! In fact I found some nice ones last night before the rain shut me down!!
@@Amanda-yf7vj awesome, I've been to the blue Forest a couple of times but I've never dug deep to get a log I'm going to do that one of these days and film it. I have a lot of the smaller blue forest petrified wood in my Tumbler right now and they are turning out gorgeous. That will be my next video so stay tuned.
@@wyearthtreasures that's awesome!!! I'll look for it. I haven't dug either lol and I don't really want to!! That's sooo much work!! I have a full time job plus a farm so I can only surface collect on my way home from work
‘sup?-enjoyed, that's amazing trip~))
Thanks, it is always exciting to see what we can find.
Thank you for showing your rocks. They're very nice especially that last one.
@@andrewp.schubert2417 you are welcome and thank you so much for watching
Slow down!! Take a little more time showing your stones.
Okay. I worry about people getting bored If I take to long. I will slow down in my next videos, which will be the lysite agate. Thanks for the advice. I am glad people what to see the beauty of the rocks.
I wanna see the nephrite😁
I would love to find some Nephrite when I am out too. I have some that I found when a friend brought us to his claim years ago. I have that in my rock tumbling video " Nephrite Jade, Petrified Wood, Lysite Agate, and other tumbled rocks" . I have also found a small piece of Forest Green Nephrite in my yard that is in the "A sample of rocks we find in our yard in Wyoming... " video, along with piece that I cut withe Nephrite embedded in the rock.
See even the "badlands" are good in Wyoming.
Thanks, I see you have watched this video. What we have a lot of in our 17 acres is rocks.
Very nice!
Thanks!
Red rocks appear to be jasper or agate-chalcedony form of fine crystalline quartz. This is the same mineral(s) that replaced the organic matter in the petrified wood you collected in the same area. Probably Triassic/Jurassic in age. I’m not sure as I’ve not studied the geology in that area, I’m just speculating. First time viewer, I’ll be looking forward to more. I’m thinking that some of the darker rocks are flint with opalized surfaces. I recommend acquiring a mineralogy field handbook at your local book store or from Amazon; preferably one with color pictures and geographical and formation environments analysis. This will help you at lease have a better chance of trying to determine the types of rocks and how they were formed that you collect. Thank you!
@@fj9460-lr thank you very much appreciate all the information. I really do need to study the area better.
Hi nancy! It's Julie watching you tumble rocks!
Hi Julie!!!! Thanks for coming to my RUclips site. What do you think? I have several videos. I just uploaded one from Blue Forest with some Butcher knife rocks too. Thanks for being my number 105 subscriber!!
Beautiful agate with water levels also is that possibly black jade?
@@CasinoBanditos That would be very cool finding black jade.
Would definitely book the bnb!!
I grew up hunting fossils here in Sylvania Ohio. Access today is very limited though. It's interesting how close to the surface the fossils you collected were. Looks like a great place to spend a day or two. The clam like fossils you found looked to be brachiopods. If you half them from the hinge to the front the two halves would be the same. Kinda like a scallop. The scaphites would be great to find. Nothing like that here in Sylvania. Thanks for the video!
@@robertmattimoe thank you very much for your information. I think I might take one of those clams and cut it in half with my trim saw. You're welcome I'm glad you like the video
@@robertmattimoe I was very excited every time we found a scaphite. Luckily here in Wyoming we have a lot of BLM land that anyone can go rock hounding on. Although we are not allowed to pick up any fossils with a vertebrae on BLM land.
Nice explanation.
Thank you
I changed the name from 10 to 15 pound. this is a 15 pound tumbler.
My wife and I will be visiting your area in June. I'd love the opportunity to do some rockhounding on your property. Let me know what we would need to do to get this to happen.
Awesome. I look into it to see if it qualifies for an Airbnb experience.
When you come to the area Google rock shops and Wyoming Earth Treasures will show up as a rock shop and have my number there call me and let me know you're in town and I will take you and your wife hunting on my property.
@@wyearthtreasures Look forward to it.
Nice materials. Wish I had stuff like that on my property. Lol
Thank you
Great collection! Thanks for sharing. I’m in northern Ohio and only wish I had those kind of treasures on my property.

@@wyearthtreasures Eventually I can see taking you up on that…making a note now👍🏼
@@WagonWheelAgatesAssociated Most definitely. I'm always up to going hiking and finding Treasures.
I love the idea of making a rock hound BNB. You have all the specimens needed. The hounding community is amazingly warm for the most part. I support you
Yes I am seriously looking into doing a Airbnb experience.
Awesome finds! Great polishing! ❤
Thank you! 😊
So cool. Not many people get to collect ant hill gems! I would love to get some of that peridot.
I think it's so cool too. The gem hunter if you Google him he took some of those peridot and had them faceted in Sri Lanka. He said they were gem quality. If you ever come to Wyoming and you want to go I can give you directions.
On top of picking up peridot off ant hills it's right by an old volcano which is so cool. Most of the people that live in the state of Wyoming have no idea we have a huge volcanic field in our state.
Oh what a blessed area you live in. So many amazing minerals. The jade is beautiful as well as the petrified wood and agates. Thanks for sharing😊
It's so fun hiking every summer and finding new things.
Thank you very much. The day was kind of cloudy. On a clear day we can see the Wind River Mountain Range of the Rocky Mountains.
i wish i was there 🤣
We have pronghorn up where we live, but never seen a herd like that usually it is just a few of them. My husband was lucky enough to turn the corner on our street and witness that herd crossing the road. Getting that recording was a once in a lifetime opportunity. To top it off the perfect song playing on the radio. What a coincidence!!
thx for the video, lovely rocks
Thank you.
Your polish is great! If you use borax in every stage it makes a thicker slurry and helps the grit stick to the rocks and grind better. Also you can use less polish if you add borax. I’m sure you’ve heard of Michigan rocks on RUclips. But if you haven’t, he has great videos and tips.
Thanks I will try borax next time.
I believe you can make rocks shinnier with ultrasonic cleaners machines
Something I can look into. Thanks for the suggestion.
Might be something to look into also for some of my bigger rocks that don't fit in a tumbler. I have a lot of rocks, drusy and other rocks that I would not want to put in a tumbler because I don't want to smooth them out that that might work really good to get them clean without losing their form.
I have just received for a Christmas gift a new rock tumbler. I have never tried this. Am I too far in age in this venture. My first batch has been tumbling three 24 HR days. I am 87 years old. Greetings from Indianapolis Indiana.
That is awesome. I think it is so much fun. The difference in the change of the rocks from the beginning to the end is amazing. I always look forward to the surprise at the end. Never to far in age to start a new hobby.
When I say 120 20 I mean 120/220 grit.
I just watched your tumbling video which I really enjoyed but was unable to comment on it. It said your comments were turned off. Just wanted to let you know encase You were unaware of it. Enjoyed watching this also😊
Thanks a lot. Sorry about the comments I am going to try to get them turned on. Thanks for watching the video!!!
I could not figure out why the comments were not on. When I was setting it up in RUclips it asked if it was child appropriate and I said yes. Seems RUclips will shut off comments if it is child friendly.
What mesh screens are you using?
Sorry it has taken me so long to answer. The largest is 1/2 inch, then 1/4 inch, 1/8 inch and the smallest is 1/16 of an inch. If anyone would like to save the smaller ones that fall through the 1/16 a 1/32 inch could be added. There are a lot of small ones that fall through my smallest one.
They are so small, how do you sell them?
I have some vials for sale on my Wyoming Earth Treasures google site. The site does not get that much traffic so not sold very many. I wish I new a jeweler that could make jewelry out of them. The garnet jewelry I see in the jewelry stores is very pretty.
Maybe there was a lava flow of some glassy type, like dacite, on top of the soft gray layer. The soft gray layer might be volcanic ash. Being softer, the gray eroded out from under the black lava. Looking at the higher hills you might find some of the black lava still in an intact layer.
Thank you for the ideas. It was so windy that day. My husband mentioned dacite when he was doing research. I have some of this in my rock tumbler. It is starting to look like it could be petrified algae. There may be a mix of different types of rocks there. It is curious though. I will post a video of all the rocks I am tumbling when I am done.
I’ve been there, lived and worked around there. Beautiful area with a lot of history and wildlife. Good spot for Moss Agate not to far away. Good vid!
Thank you for your compliment. I love being outside in Wyoming. So much to do and so many beautiful places to see and rocks and fossils to find. Hate the long winters, not being able to get outside and explore. I get cabin fever every winter, but the summers are so worth it.
look for gold on the inside bend of the river
It is close to South Pass city and the Carissa gold mine. I need to take the time and look for gold. I look for it when I am panning for garnets, but so far just a whole lot of Mica.
Never realized there were so many garnets in a river....What do you do with them?
I have a lot of garnets to do things with. Now that I am retired maybe I can come up with some craft ideas to make with them or if I could find a jeweler who could make jewelry out of them. A couple on my first trip years ago, said they make greeting cards with them. Make designs and glue the garnets on them. I bet I could think of things to do with them if I put my mind to it.
I forgot to say in the video, any where in the river where I was at there are garnets galore. That area is behind the South Pass rest area.
