One Last Day of Middle Provo Fly Fishing Before Runoff
Are you sure last trip to the Berry, there is still some open water! 😉 I just noticed a new float tube! How do you like that one?
Unfortunately I'm sure because I doubt I'm going to be able to fish until the new year. But yes, I managed to snag an Outcast Stealth Pro for a good price. I love it so far.
Enough said
Good to cap off the season with a good day.
What is the reason for letting out slack after the cast?
Some of the time I just want more fly line off the reel going forward, but also if I'm kicking away from the flies it's a way to extend out the cast a bit. It also allows the flies to drop straight down and get the true sink rate of the line versus sinking under slight tension.
What intermediate line do you use?
On my 6wt I have a SA Sonar Clear Camo Intermediate 6wt (185gr) , which I love as a pairing with my Hardy Ultralite. On my 7wt I have an Orvis Hydros Intermediate 7wt (200 gr) that I'm not quite happy with its performance. I think eventually I'm going to replace that with the SA Clear Camo 7wt (215gr) as it'll shoot and turn over heavier rigs a little better.
@@TroutFlies Excellent! And great video.
Feverishly looks on the internet for FAB materials....
If you're not 100% sold yet, just wait for the follow up to this video...
Love the Hardy rods! I have the Ultralite and Zephrus. They get a lot of use!
Yeah, they cast stillwater lines great! Tons of reserve power and good energy transfer.
Good video as always. Good information. I’m no expert by any measure, but for me, there’s been more success using balanced flies under an indicator as the water cools, especially in the lower 40’s. I grew up casting and retrieving in lakes. I prefer it, but indicator rigs perform better this type of year for me
Definitely a good idea to start off with confidence techniques as you get the mood of the fish dialed in. We all have different ways of feeling that out.
What is the trick to keep you're feet from not going numb? I use waders but feet were numb last time lol.
I layer pretty significantly on my lower half. I use toe warmers when the water temps dip closer to the 30s. Luckily, I tend to have some innate cold tolerance as well.
@TroutFlies Thanks much appreciated
Cool video as always
Awesome video
Nice fishing Bob 💪
Thanks! Hope the you and the family are doing well!
That boat looks pretty sick, a cool size and amenities. Love it when fish cooperate too!
I've had it out a few times now. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade.
looked like you had good success with the sinking line. how deep were you? thanks, Bob.
After I switched to the type 3 and type 4 sweep I was getting down 5-12 feet probably. Though after the wind came up I was quick hand twist retrieving the lines as soon as they hit the water. I eventually switched back to an intermediate when I threw the feather game changer.
I love that spot. Thanks for leaving some for us to catch. :)
Oh I left plenty haha
New float tube I see! Some nice fish in that area for sure. I'm hoping to fish this next year.
Yeah, I'll prolly add this to my rotation!
Awesome! I was just there the second weekend of November and we also were killing it fly fishing
Nice! Good to hear it's still fishing well. Might have to get out there one more time.
Nice work! Beautiful fish! Congratulations on the Stealth Pro! Great boat! I’ve had mine for 4 years and I love it. Strip apron hack - the front of the apron bows easily so I bought aluminum bar stock from HD. Cut it to size, smoothed the edges, made a small surgical incision in corner and inserted the bar. It’s light and rock solid. Enjoy that boat and keep up the good work!
Nice! Thanks for the tip. If that issue gets too frustrating I might have to do that.
Can you provide more info on your line set up when using a midge tip? How long is your leader? What is the max depth you will fish a midge tip? Thanks.
After the fly line, I have a 5' section of 16 lb Fluoro to a tippet ring. On a three fly rig I go 4-5' of 6 lb Sunline FC Sniper in between flies, connected with a triple surgeons knot and tying flies off tags for a total leader length of 18-20 feet. If two flies I typically go 6' then 5' for a total leader length or around 16'.
Thanks for sharing. It's always cool to watch these. It looks like it went well overall.
Thanks! I'm bummed most of the comp fish catches were when I forgot to hit record.
is there any point to midge tip lines if you can use indicators?
Depends on where the fish are in the water column. I love midge tip lines and they can cover a variety of depths. I think Bob did a good job explaining some of the strengths of dry dropper setups especially when they are in the shallows.
Yes. They allow you to fish multiple fly rigs well over shallower water. They also allow you to pull flies more. They do cover some of the same situations, but you cover more fish with a midge tip as well. I only fish indicators if I feel they really want a static presentation.
I begged for a fly rod and from my parents at i think 9 years old was lucky enough to had been given one for a bday. Problem was i didnt know anyone that fly fished and therefore had no teacher. Id seen prices of a guide so i knew to not even ask my parents about anything like that haha. So it was a long slow uncountable number of skunk days on the river learning experience for me. Literally years and years till i caught my first fish on a fly. Its shocking to me now that i was so in aww with the world of fly fishing that i stuck it out as i did while never catching fish for so long. As I got older i started meeting people that also fly fished and picked up alot more from them but i was close to 20 by this point. So 10 or 11 years of pissing other fishermen off on the Provo and the Weber from trying to squeeze next to them so i could see how and what they was doing. I laugh now but i truly must have pissed a few guys off pretty bad in my early teens just trying to figure things out and catch my first trout on a fly. Looking back i cant believe none of them fella's never just pulled me aside seeing i had no clue what i was doing and teach me some quik basics and help me with a fly that matched. But after all them years of self teaching i was able to pick up enough that i can now days hit the provo and get a few fish to tug on my line right there with the other fishermen. If its a super good day i might even be lucky enough to pick em up on a dry. Most have changed to euro style but ive always stuck to the old indicator and a couple splitshot. Took all them years for me to learn that style so i wasnt about to instantly switch it over to a different syle that id have to learn on my own all over again. So the point of this horribly long comment is that after all that in my past its great to have learned so many lil tips and tactics from ur videos and now today the indicator on stillwater deal that i see u do so well with. Probably wouldnt have ever even tried anything other then stripping in buggers while on stillwaters if not for ur films showing the tactics u urself use. So im just wanting to say thanks for putting in all the time and effort that u do to create these videos. I wish id of had all of them to watch when i was a kid to learn from. Kinda makes for some cool memories because of the way i had to figure it all on my own i suppose. Next will be streamers on a river haha over 35 years fly fishing and ive still never thrown a streamer yet let alone caught one on a streamer, on a river that is. Im excited for that one also to say the least! Anyhow sorry for the longest thank u that uve ever gotten im sure but i wanted to tell u my experience growing up self teaching fly fishing so ud truly understand my real appreciation for all u do! Still cant afford the guide so thank god for the videos hahaha Seriously though thank u so much Bob! Im sure we'll cross paths on one of the local waters one of these days and ill get to shake ur hand and tell u thank u in person and apologize for this way to long story/comment so u can remember who i am lmao!Tight lines!!
Hey Billy, thanks for the kind words. Catching a fish is such a special experience that never gets old. Part of doing these videos and including the tips and my experiences is to help others get those experiences a little more often as well. Thanks for the kind words! I'm always trying to remind myself to verbalize what is going through my mind during a day out on the water. I'm sure our paths will cross at some point! I'm always happy to chat with anyone that comes up and says hello.
How many feet did u have from indicator to point fly? Is that the amount u started with or did u have to adjust till u found the depth needed? Is ur foot between indicator and fly pretty close to the same when on stillwater on average or is it often different time to time? Ive never fished an indicator on Stillwater and id obviously like add it to my arsenal so im just curious where abouts i should start when i do attempt it. For Stillwater ive always just fished a sinking line 6ft leader then to a single bugger trying multi colors till i find what worked that day. Never even crossed my mind to fish more then one fly while fishing that style and on Stillwater till seeing u fishing ur bait ball and using that to check multiple depths and flies at once. Ive always had good luck with what i was doing i felt like so it was kinda if its not broke dont fix it deal i guess. Always for learning new tactics though of course
My process is always generally to start up in the column, say 5 feet or less to the point fly and then add length as needed until I start getting into fish. One trigger for me to start going deeper is if it's calm or light wind out, and I'm seeing very little surface activity.
Awesome content. Congratulations!! You did very well. Google says I can be at this body of water in 27 hours. I’m honestly thinking about coming out there. Thanks!!
Haha. How'd your stillwater session go?
@@TroutFlies since our waters were stocked recently the fishing has been slow. The most productive method is using streamers and multiple streamers on a washing line moving them very fast through the water. I’m stripping line in as about as fast as I can retrieve the flies. It’s taking this kind of line speed to get a reaction. Hey, it’s a fun eat but it gets tedious after a few hours having to fish this aggressively. I believe as the water cools the eat will change to a slow nymph or buzzer eat. I’m sincerely enjoying the Stillwater fall fishing here in Wv. Thanks for asking, I appreciate it!!
Nice! What brand is the FYI tying mat?
It's a full pedestal base! It's from this shop (It is super heavy as it's full cast iron): www.etsy.com/listing/1647749791/improved-cast-pedestal-xl?click_key=468cf2b41b3157197393435dc3f914b0c31e0ddf%3A1647749791&click_sum=71b650ff&ref=shop_home_recs_2
Give us a written description of what you are using.
A good morning on the Berry. Nice catches.
Thanks!
What kind of vise are you using?
This is just a standard Renzetti Traveler with a custom base. I do have plans for a vise soon though.
Saving this video. Beautiful flies, thanks!!!
I would like to come up there and watch part of the competition. Is there a way to do that? More info please...
Yes, could you reach out to me via my website or through the email on my youtube channel page?
@TroutFlies I sent my contact info through your website. Send me more info, thanks.
Were you still using the midge tip with the washing line?
Re the fire - think it mostly didn’t affect the streams themselves aside from wolf creek. We’ll have to see what that does to spawning habitat but I’m cautiously optimistic for the drainage as a whole now that they’ve got the south side contained & it hasn’t jumped down the canyon walls into the north fork.
Just getting into Euro nymping and I live In midway so I fish middle Provo a lot any tips
My best advice for the MP is to get away from the community holes close to the parking lots. Also, especially if you have the presentation advantages of a Euro nymphing rig, my advice is to fish different water types than the typical deep runs, pools, and tailouts. Focus on areas like seams, pocket water, and riffles. Going into winter, I'd focus more on locating pods of fish in softer water areas.
Nice fish. Do you mind sharing the water temp and time of day? I'm asking for a friend...
This was mostly mid morning to afternoon. Water temps were in the high 50s.
Hey bob, awesome video! I just signed up for the mini! What is your email? I have a couple questions ide like too ask if ya don’t mind! Thanks!
Hi Jackson, if you go to my channel page and click on the "more" section (underneath my channel name) it'll show you the drop down with an email you can get in contact with me through. Or you can send me a message through the contact form on my site. Glad you signed up! It's gonna be a ton of fun.
@@TroutFlies I looked and couldn’t find the more section on your page, do you know if you have to be on a desktop too access that?
Hey Bob, great video! Love seeing the streamer action! Your flies catch fish everywhere👌.. I'm also looking at a good 6wt streamer stick. I've been using a 7wt cheapo that's heavy, I've had it since the late 90s so I figured it's time to upgrade😄.. Hope you and your family are well✌️
Here in Wv my best stocked lake is stocking tomorrow and this weekend. I’m going through my Stillwater lines and gear. I’m so excited I don’t want to eat or sleep much. I’m counting down by the hour. Great content, thanks!!!
Nice! sounds like it'll be a fun change of pace. Hope you slay em.
Nice fIy. Iooks Iike a Iot of trout's stomach contents.
That is an epic day, with some epic fish!
Looks like a great day! What was the CFS when you filmed this?
I think it was around 160 cfs
love these! the more technical the better brother! nice job out there.
Thanks!
I’m thinking about getting a streamer rod and was wondering what kind of line I should put on my reel. Sink tip or full sink
I think that depends on the type of streamer fishing you'll be doing. If mostly from a boat, I think there is merit to a full sink line like the Airflo Streamer Max Long or Short. If walk and wading, I would NOT want a full sinking line as the line is going to sink to your feet as you strip it in and be a PITA to deal with. In that case I'd want a sink tip like I was using in this video.
@@TroutFlies cool thank you that is very helpful
Some good streamer and nymphing action this day! Always gotta love the steamer eat.
Thanks! I wish I woulda found a more streamery day to go out and do this, but glad a few decided to eat it.
What is the reel system you use? Thanks
Hi Doug, I'm using the Hardy Ultradisc Casette system. Mine is specifically the 6000 series: www.hardyfishing.com/products/ultradisc-cassette-fly-reel?variant=45455224701066
@@TroutFlies thanks
Haha found the buoy lane on Hegben. Indicator fishing on the ledge works great
Which part was the buoy line drift? My boat partner has more experience on Hebgen so he brought us there.
@@TroutFlies someone dredged a channel for a resort or something. There are buoys marking it. My guide from blue ribbon took us and we attached to one and indicator fished for a non stop bite
Maybe it’s changed, this was 2019
What rod are you using when fishing the river?
I brought two 10' 2wt Diamondback Ideal Nymph rods with me and a 4wt dry fly rod.
Nice one, good to show people some of the variety of what's involved in comp fishing. :)
Thanks!
Congrats! Looks like you fished well
I was mostly happy with how I fished. Hopefully each one I fish I can keep improving.
So much to process from this one! Loved all the variety in the water, was a true test! Did you find much to learn when you were controlling?
I was lucky enough to control Cody Burgdorff on Henry's Fork. He's a hell of a fisherman. I got to watch him fish behind me on the beat. He seemed to fish a lot of the same water types and techniques that I did, so that gave me some encouragement that I was on the right track on approach.
awesome video concept thx for sharing
Thank you!
Congrats on a good showing! Little trout & chubs trolling hard there though haha
Haha yeah. I didn't expect there to be chubs there so the disappointment was heightened because I was already having a rough session.
