He points out realities of acting in this interview that I had never noticed before. I'm just in high school theatre but listening to him talking about the work and rehearsals and challenging yourself with other actors and difficult roles makes me realize that those things are present in every role and performance you take. I admire him as an actor. He's so amazing. Also I envy his training and education in this field. He went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts AND he was trained in Shakespeare. What can't he do?

It was interesting that he deliberately did absolutely no research into autism in preparation for playing 'Alex' so that his relationship with Linda would evolve more organically, and in contrast, Sigourney Weaver spent about a year studying an autistic woman in order to really understand her behaviour. The results speak for themselves! He was such a special person with remarkable values and political convictions - a staunch and loyal Labour Party supporter his entire life - very much reflected in his 'Truly, Madly, Deeply' character 'Jamie' - which I believe was written for him - another masterpiece created by the late Anthony Minghella. I love the fact that he was with his life-long partner for fifty years whom he'd met when he was 19 and she was 18, but they only married very discreetly a couple of years before he died.
