How does the e46 compare to the clio on track?
Totally different experience from the ‘club sport’ spec clio to the full on e46. Rear wheel drive is so much more engaging and rewarding but a much bigger challenge. Clio feels nippier due to the shorter wheel base but the e46 is much more planted and the grip is next level. Compared to the laps I was doing in the clio vs the current e46 laps there’s about 10 seconds a lap in it around Oulton Park but my driving has improved some what too. If I had to pick, I’d always have the e46. But have another clio for the weekends again.
Ngl I've been watching your build for a while - suspect we might even be local! (Not far from Cadwell). I need to finish my e46... Good laps too! 👌
I’m actually 30 minutes from Oulton Park despite seeming to spent a lot of track time at Cadwell! Good to see more and different e46’s around. 👌🏼

Custom logger based on Arduino/Teensy logger to collect data from Canbus. Then edited in Race Render.

Cheers! Yeah, Exhaust Gas Oxygen sensor from ECU. Not quite driver EGO! No longer needed on the data now as it’s changed to a STFT rather than instant fueling corrections.

@@joseverdejo9010 Felt really good at Oulton despite there being very little grip anywhere! Done the best I can with the engine now, time will tell.
Shame I didn't see you out on track this day, looked like we were lapping at similar speeds. Nice catch at 3:00 as well👌the track was slippy and slow AF all day, fastest lap I managed was a 2:10 when a semi dry line appeared for a session after dinner.
Cheers! Yeah was down to around 2:09 with a passenger in the second to last session of the day still on Rainsports. Never got chance to run dry tyres sadly. Straight after lunch was the best session when there was just a dry line in some areas of the circuit but sketchy if you got a bit too close to the edge of it.

Hi Tom, what the rod\crank beraings gap was? Engine was almost new...
I have always had BMW E36 but in the process of dropping an M54B30 in place of my M54B22 in my track car (also meaning I need to keep the Getrag 250 for now!). The oil pump situation scares me a bit. I’m thinking loctite it and leave it. Regardless of what people do, even upgrade to VACmotorsport kit etc it seems to fail with one failure mode or the other. Madness.
You can get an M52B28TU and swap the rotating assembly into an M54 block and head. Keep the B30 cams and it'll be a slightly destroked M54B28. The B28 crank has less harmonics than the B30. Should install an oil pump chain tensioner (look up S54 tensioner on M54). There are also the upgraded harmonic balancers, but they're expensive as hell XD
@@ThatOneCatNyx I did see the chain tensioner seems to work. I’ll not be raising the Rev limit like I did on M52B28’s anyway 😂
Valuable info here, never realized how low oil pressure gets during hard braking or cornering in this car
Even with a baffle it does drop here and there. Improving the baffle design would be a benefit. At least the ‘lower’ oil pressure is when the engine isn’t under load.
Do you have a super damper on the car? I heard that sorta solves the whole harmonics thing above 5000rpm, a bit pricey though.
Will be adding a damper this time around when the engine is rebuilt.
These M54B30's really aren't working out for you Tom. Maybe a nice S54 instead?
Oil pump nut? At least you caught it before it was serious damage 💪🏾
Snapped the oil pump shaft it’s self. Needs new bearings and a bottom end rebuild along with a few other damaged bits I’ve found so far.
@@Just_A_330cihave you tried the tensioner mod for m52/m54 with the pump nut mod or was the engine stock ?
@@joseverdejo9010 This engine has the oil pump tensioner fitted. I was hoping it was going to be the fix as it’s been reliable for a couple of years now.
@@Just_A_330ci I was hoping it would be the fix as well, with the tensioner taking slack out of the chain and the nut tied on I’m really curious why the shaft still snapped
@@Just_A_330ci oh yeah they snap shafts too, the facelift engines have an updated harmonic balancer which helps with vibrations

Hi Tom! I have been following your build since forever. Congrats on everything you've done to your car. I've learnt a lot. How are you feeling about the Schrick cams? I've been thinking about them for a while now but never made the decision. Are they worth it? Thanks!
The cams make a big different to the engine, previously it was out of revs at 5,500 but now revs nicely to 6,800. If you've seen the build threads online there a plenty of dyno graphs on there for comparisons.

What oil pump do you run?
I’m back running a standard oil pump with a lock wire after running two vac motorsport kits which failed.
@@Just_A_330ci oh wow, good to know! Have you had a lot of track days on the pump nut wire solution? I also have seen the Seems Legit Garage’s oil pump kit.
Run the s54 oil pump with s54 sump. It has two oil pickup
@@johnsmith-gm4kf Never have any real issues with oil pressure to warrant changing the pump for the twin pickups. Only get a minor dip on heavy braking but the standard pump and a baffle works fairly well. I’m led to believe you still swaps the shafts in the s54 pumps to interface with the m54 chain so still have the standard sprocket issues.
@@johnsmith-gm4kf $3k for that setup, but I bet there will be nothing ever to worry about on that motor!

Thanks for the vid but how are you managing to read oil temps?
Initially reading it off the Canbus on the standard ECU. Now I log all the data through a Canbus logger through the ECU Master Black. Same principle just different ECU.
Thanks for the reply. Sorry I'm an amatuer at these kind of things but in my e46 m3 I'm seeing the standard oil temp gauge rise to 3/4s of the way round on track, is this normal as I back off and cool down once it reaches those temps and do you know how accurate the standard gauge is to the electronic readings you're getting as I've heard it reads high.
You sure it only has 264hp? A 2.8 with schrick cams can make 260-270 hp, i would expect the 3L to make closer to 300 with schrick cams, considering it has double vanos and bigger displacement
The latest/new engine which is the same spec made 270bhp on a reliable dyno. Those figures are right for the spec, to see closer to 290 you need ITB’s. Then higher compression and bigger cams to get over 300.
@@Just_A_330ci Apparently people run B25 pistons in the B30 block for higher compression
Oil pump holding up okay? I’m stuck as to what to do with mine after seeing your experience. Part of me thinks to just grin and bear it and get a harmonic damper.
Would defo recommend doing something! I’ve had 2 failures, upgraded the standard shaft… VAC motorsport kit came loose. VAC motorsport kid lock wired just chewed the shaft and the gear. Back on standard shaft and nut with double lock wire.

@Tom B what mods have you in the car ? I have a m54b30+m50 intake laying around and im thinking of if i should put it in on a e36 or on e46.
This is m50 inlet with Schrick Cams. S50 exhaust manifolds on ECU Master Black.
@@Just_A_330ci Did you ported headed the engine for the m50 intake? I what some Schrick Cams too but theyre expensive as fock 🤣
@@F0ste This is with a pretty much standard head on the inlet side, I use an adaptor from EBay which ports the difference between the manifold and the head. No issue with flow with that set up and bolts on. Schrick cams are worth it but you’ll need new valve springs and retainers to go with the bigger cams like the 272/256 I run.
@@Just_A_330ci Do you have the link or the name of the adaptor port please? I dont think the cams are worth it , because i run the car on drift events . I want to build something "good" but not a big monster like yours . I want to have fun on the end of the day and came home with the car in full pieces :P
