From The Wild
Канада
Добавлен 22 фев 2021
A journey in wild food. From the Wild was created with the ethos that having a close relationship to where our food comes from is profoundly important. Sharing meals conjured from wilderness adventures with kindred spirits - that's what this is.
What it's not is a cooking show, or survival show, or hunting show - it’s a diary of the exploration of the wilderness, trying to connect the dots between wild species and culinary. The series is largely filmed, edited, and scored by Kevin Kossowan.
S11 is now releasing right here on RUclips! Prior seasons + events: www.fromthewild.ca
From The Wild has earned two James Beard Foundation Award nominations for 'best webseries', and 'visual and technical excellence' alongside Netflix's 'Chef's Table' and CNN's 'Parts Unknown. Kevin's been nominated for three Canadian Screen Awards for 'best directing', 'best original score', and 'best photography on location'. Kevin is also co-creator of Les Stroud's Wild Harvest.

From The Wild - S11E4 - Burn (Full Episode)
Kevin and Eric had been talking about hitting a burn together to pick morels - for years. A seriously experienced pro, Eric (Untamed Feast) talks through the different types of burn morels, where they like to pop up, and some tips on picking them. Kevin works on a batch of fireweed tea (Ivan Chai), and the episode wraps up focused on ratroot after some gratuitous morel cookery over the campfire.
Kevin is a filmmaker, outdoors food guide, and creator of the series. All seasons available at www.fromthewild.ca.
Eric is from Untamed Feast. His YT channel is @untamedfeast. Eric appears in many episodes through the years, including the very popular S10E1 & 2. Another keeper is S6E1.

Always a super fun time. Great job Kevin. I wonder how that fireweed tea in the morel is doing lol. Your knife looks great in the video, mine: disposable...lost too many nice knives on burns over the years lol. You have inspired me to make time to make some fireweed tea this summer!!, see you soon bud.
See you soon!! The Uline knife and bucket are 🙌🏻🔥
making your own flies is one of my favorite things to do
Such incredible content
Thanks!!
Love this one. Relatable. Eric does a great job explaining the wormy mushrooms and what to look for, especially regarding the little holes in the stipe.
👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
Really like the energy of this one. Eric sure brings a unique energy to the screen!
Thanks sir. It’s a bit quirky and off track, and I love it for that reason.
These days, if you pay attention to the news, the look outside of your window becomes distorted. In fact, you often fail to look out of your window. So, stop watching the news and go touch, taste, smell, feel and see what is outside of your window; and beyond, to get another window into the actual reality of the earth and our place in it. It’s called soul searching. All cures and healing come from nature and the people who understand and practice that are truly better off than those who watch the news. This Nova Scotian LOVED this piece of art. Thank you.
Really appreciate the thoughtful comment. 🙏🏻
Just wanted to pop on and say I'm so excited for today's episode, but I refuse to have it on as background noise at work. Gonna wait for a peaceful breakfast tomorrow morning to sit down and watch it! Assuming I can wait that long...
Big fan of folks setting aside an intentional moment to immerse themselves in it all. Big fan.
I think the problem is time and money. No way do these guys not have a stacked amount of money. Most people can only go fishing once a month. Sad, but true. This is not reality especially right now.
If it helps: my son and I ice fish two days a year. I’ve also long been an advocate of minimalist gear (walk on, hand lines). All the big toys are my dad’s. FTW was born from the idea of ‘what if you spent one weekend a month doing fun outdoors food things’, which was pretty doable even when the show made zero $ and we were busy raising little kids.
@ I apologize for my harsh comments. It is just sad and frustrating for a lot of folks who are working 2-3 jobs. I had a friend take a group of kids to the lake for the first time in their lives and they started crying for the first time because they never saw it. I was just thinking about that and how everyone is working themselves to death without even being able to escape and have not been able to their entire lives.
All good. And understood. I agree: connection with nature shouldn’t at all be only for the elite. Thankfully opportunities exist to get out in our communities, I spend much of my summer guiding folks here where we live. Really appreciate the comments 👍🏻
When you find your people…that got me, well done.
Flies tied with fur and feathers that smell natural are deadly. Take the foam and rubber and throw it in the trash.
It is a great watch and very powerful.. I have to connect with the river, nature, and fishing as much as I can to keep my soul healthy.. I just wish more people could find the connection we anglers find in fishing
There’s something particularly soothing about a stream. Totally understand its relationship with wellness, and glad you’re able to connect to that too.
Wow, what an opening scene, those trees were just incredible. Could have watched the camera gliding through trees for hours. Amazing camera work by Preston and great seeing you on the other side of the lens Kevin!
Glad you liked it!! And yeah - that opener has got to be one of the best in the series. Preston did some pretty killer work.
This was one of the most beautifully well put together fishing and cooking episode I've ever had the pleasure of watching. 100% soul soothing and exactly what I needed today. Thank you! ❤
Thank. You.
I was very proud to be a part of this episode with Kevin and Mel. Great friends whom I cherish. And now I get to visit with them both along this favourite trout stream any time I like. ❤
Love you bud. ❤️
@ love you too. 👍
Thank you!
You’re welcome!!
Beautiful film! Love the pace, just folks relaxing and soaking it in.
🙏🏻🙏🏻
fly guide from NZ here, nice wee filmlove her passion..... quite a catch
Hello way over there! Thanks for the kind words.
Soulsoothing....... yup. 👊🏼👍🏼🤙🏼
Aw man, this was really beautiful. Not everyone “gets it”, but you got it here! It’s like capturing lightning in a bottle. While most of the world exists in the shallows, this is the deep end. This is real. Earthy, gritty, courageous. Not everyone goes out and gets it, thank you for sharing this. ❤
This was so appropriate for this time and place in the world at large. There's no politics. No trying to induce fear or worry. No arguing. No disrespect. It's just two humans doing simple, beautiful things together. I love that you put two people on camera who are very honest and open. I could feel the genuine joy they both were expressing. This is so great. Thank you!
Really appreciate this - glad you enjoyed it!
🙏🏻
That is super gracious and insightful. 🙏
Just finished watching. Awesome episode!! Well told story and beautiful videography. Was especially meaningful to me as I’ve been going up to the Cariboo my whole life.
Thanks! Completely understand connection to place and glad this resonated on that front.
a very life affirming adventure up here in BC! The commentaries from you all and the reflection on the experience and how it effected you were outstandingly good. Well done!
Thanks!
Leave the root in soil. Cut it without pulling mycelium root so it can grow again.
That is my old country. Nice to see a spot not over logged. I grew up in the real start of logging. One flat deck hauling lumber. Then 50 logging trucks. Buck Brush here in Alberta whew, can't see through it but I will warrant it is mostly Witch Hazel. Next Saskatoon & the rest is Red Tag Alder but mostly Buck Brush is Witch Hazel that grows under our big poplars. It looks like he has what we called Bog Birch. We used to like smoking Columbian Gold if we could trade for it, 😂. Lumby Lager
Appreciate your comments! Just to keep things nice and confusing, 'buck brush' is in fact an actual species (Symphoricarpos occidentalis). You're right - the understory in Alberta is heavily beaked hazelnut and rose. Saskatoon and vaccinium in the creeks and river valleys. Lots of red osier dogwood. Interesting you called it bog birch - I've heard that term before. Scrub birch is common too. Betula Glandulosa - pretty neat plant. Have seen it taller in the foothills when fly fishing.
Artistic on so many levels❤
THANK YOU! I try.
All these things that the normal, lay person is oblivious to😊
It’s tough to know what to share, but glad it offered a window into the world of making it!
@@fromthewildcaabsolutely!❤
Very enjoyable filmmaking. Beautiful cabin!
Thanks! It’s a pretty special place.
Firstly - thanks Kevin for taking the time to put together these videos, secondly - foraging is one major skill I haven’t been putting more time into with regard to my enjoyment of thriving in the outdoors. It’s always amazing how much society forgets; can be available to us outside a grocery store..! Awesome work !
Thanks! The plant side of things took me a long time to learn to appreciate. Hopefully helping some folks speed run that process.
Awsome
“That’s not no nettles…”. So immersive, so connected to the earth, to the density of nutrients. Abundance everywhere, yet hidden. The fiddleheads, morels, and mutton. I thought I saw a bowl full of what looked like Mahonia flower buds? Oregon grape leaf holly? I tried them for the first time growing here in my backyard, and what a sweet, sour, delightful taste. Blooming in the winter. No wonder the honey bees flock to them when the winter temps get up in the fifty’s, (Fahrenheit). I’m curious if that wasn’t Mahonia, what that might be. The round, pea looking things. Anyway, I could smell the aromas from here,(Maryland, USA)😊.
Hello over there in Maryland! The pea looking things are the buds of marsh marigold (caltha palustris). We show the picking of those in S11E1 - this episode was a continuation of that one. We don't have Mahonia in Alberta, but it is in BC - wonderful plant.
@@fromthewildcaawesome! Thanks so much! I’ll have to look into the marsh marigold 👍
Kevin really enjoy your videos. i remember you as a boy in moose camp. If you were referring to your grandfather Louis,I too have been forever touched by him and his appreciation for the bush and have many memories of our moose hunts together. I too was just a teenager experiencing the overwhelming bounty that the forest provides and is where I feel most at peace.his appreciation and zest for life was infectous. Great memories I will keep forever.yours truly. Mark zahacy
Hey Mark! GREAT to hear from you! I was indeed referring to my grandpa Louis. Agreed - he was widely regarded for his zest for living, and finding joy in the day to day. Thanks for reaching out!

@ thanks so much
How do you use the Horsetail in a recipe. Second, whete is this filmed that you are not covered in woodticks and mosquitoes.
Thinks of horsetail like a bean sprout. Also, look to Japanese recipes as they use it when it’s in season. Filmed in Alberta in mid May. It’s about 1-2 weeks before mosquitos come, and I’ve still never seen a tick in this province. They’re around, I’ve just never seen one. Yet.
@@fromthewildca I've seen a bunch of ticks doing hikes in the front range. But they aren't the kind that you get Lyme disease from.
Yeah I believe that - have heard of more down southwest. They're around. The only place I've had one on me or my team was in Sweden in S2.
Instant favorite! So many unique stories that combined into the behind with Blair and Paul. Seeing the results of everything was inspiring. As you’ve said you have impacted the culinary space locally and in your country, here’s hoping that it has or starts to spread to the States as well. Sure has for me 👏
Thanks Mike! Same for me. Preston was able to dig into me in a way that isn't possible on your own. I loved seeing the plates back at Rge Rd too. And here's hoping - RUclips really shifted the viewership from about 70% Canadian to 70% American. For whatever reason, Washington, Oregon, California, New York - that's where the most viewers are. Really grateful you've followed along since the beginning - it's been quite the ride.
So glad I stumbled upon your films! On a side note, what’s he name of your book that talks about mud soup? I’d love to read it if I’m able to find it. Thanks.
The Buckskin Cookbook. I think? Eric's actually out at the cabin now, and may report back with something different, as somebody else also asked so trying to get to the bottom of it.
I got back last night. Cabin in great shape. The book had no cover left, however, there used to be a few kicking around and I'm pretty sure they are called "buckskin cookery" was sort of a series of small soft covers..
what cameras do you use to film?, it's very well done
This episode (and most of the series) uses a Canon C100Mk2 as A-Cam. Mavic2Pro in the air. Canon 6D for any 2-cam scenes, and the primary photo cam. That's about it. Fussy about mics though, and write all the score - that helps a lot.
Amazing content and beautiful cinematography. Thank you for sharing.
Appreciated, and you're welcome! Thanks for watching.

I just found your channel, and I just absolutely love everything it’s about. I’m glad it’s the weekend so I can binge it all.
Thanks for saying something - it really does mean a lot to hear this kind of thing from folks that 'get it'.
@@fromthewildcathere’s something about understanding plants that naturally grow around us, and our connection to the earth, and how simplicity through an almost struggling way just makes more sense than anything else. My goal is that kind of life.
Jordan adds a certain..fire..energy..feeling(?).. to their approach that is inspiring on another level. Thank you for sharing this experience with us.
Yep, couldn't agree more. We're lucky to have her involved with the series, no question.
