The Stoic Wolfe

Just your average guy that loves to spend time in the great outdoors. From camping to hiking to bushcraft, if its outdoors you can consider me there. I've logged many hours in the woods and I have finally decided to make an account to share my perspectives and adventures. Ill also provide in depth reviews on some gear that I own to better help others to make selections, and hopefully inspire some to get outside.
DIY Tailgate Platform (Mountain Hatch inspired!)
Im sure I'm not the only person that dislikes trying to utilize a tailgate for delicate tasks and not having enough flat workspace. Theres plenty of products on the market that alleviate this.. but only in newer model trucks. In this video ill show you how I created my own mounting points and fitted up a plastic UV resistant "cutting board" to turn the whole tailgate into a usable workspace on a 2002 Dodge Dakota.

A quick review of my runners kit/ recon kit bag made by Hill People Gear...The difference between the two is the molle or PALS webbing on front. In this video I'll demonstrate how to deploy in a self defense scenario, and I'll also do a quick rundown of the gear I carry inside. I use this bag as a minimalistic hiking kit, which doubles as an emergency kit in case I'm ever separated from my bag....
Winnerwell Woodlander Stove Review (Hot Tent Setup)
Просмотров 36 тыс.6 лет назад
In this video I'll describe the most recent purchase I have made toward four season camping. The winnerwell stove is a fun little stove with a great design. Any questions are welcomed, and I hope this video provides some clarity! Please like and subscribe!
Great idea thanks for the video! Love your dogs
What’s the brand and model of the chest pack you have on in this vid?
Thinking about getting the 9x8 as well and eventually DIY a stove jack too. Quick question: Would you recommend this tent for my gf and I along with our dog? Could this fit a queen sized pad/mattress and still have enough room for a stove jack and sleeping area for our dog? Thanks!
I love this idea. Possible improvement... cut the tarp to size (width x2) which will leave a gap of 2x thickness of ladder, put in extra grommets and add paracord lacing - slip it on, tighten the laces. Losen the laces, slip it off. Takes up a bit less space, but provides a more rigid surface. You could also add pockets on the back for say 24" aluminum battens (1/8 inch x 2" flat barstock - or similar) if you need to reduce sag even more. That way your only putting in grommets, and sewing 2 layers of cavas.
Brilliant
Now I know I can buy a roof top tent and camp with my dogs. Thank you for the idea. Love it.
Either the Alabama Hills or the Buttermilks. I'm going with the Buttermilks area.
I believe using their Triple Wall Pipe Section would have helped protect that Flashing Silicone from those extreme temps.
Have the same tent. No need for a hot tent situation down to 0 degrees. 50 degrees stated is laughable.
Hey pal noce vid. I have the Kodiak 10x14 just purchased the woodlander stove large. Waiting on the jack from winnerwell.. question do u keep jack on when fold uo the tent i to the bag ? If so what about the shap edges of the wing nuts ???
?
Good video!
Dude thanks for the video. I’m thinking of putting one in my 10x10z what size stove is that? And do you recommend and certain size after having that one? I’d obviously want it to stay on the longest without feeding every hour but I know it’s tough. Always gunna be just me in my tent most likely maybe dog too
Lassen forest is an awesome place was there recently👍
Nice video,from
Cottonwood
Thanks !! Where can I buy the tarp?
Excellent!!!
Thank you!!!
Great vid thanks for posting, greetings from Australia 👍🇦🇺
use something like a GlowForge to engrave your logo
That's a great idea! Thanks!
😘 "Promo SM"
Awesome location man!! Looks like somewhere off 395 maybe Owens Valley area??
HellToTheYeah
That is pretty sweet. What a great project
Thanks! It's much nicer to use the tailgate now!
Great job man!
Thanks bro! I've already started thinking of ways to change it and make it better lol
I'm trying to figure out how to get my basset hound up into my tent on a 4runner, by myself... This is the closest solution I've found, but I'm pretty sure he needs less of an incline.
Depending on the height your ladder extends to, im sure you could kick the ladder out further to accommodate him, seeing as my ladder isnt fully extended here. This might require a bigger tarp but you wouldn't know unless you test it to see. Or you could utilize a bigger tote or chest than I do in the video, if he's capable of making a small initial jump... it would reduce the incline further.
What size is your winnerwell stove, medium or large? I’m interested in a 10x14 or possible 10x10 Kodiak flex bow tent and a winnerwell stove. Don’t know if the medium or large winnerwell would be best? I camp into winter with temps into the low teens. Now that’s some time has passed since this video how it this setup holding up?
Based on the dimensions on their site this is the large model. I camp in the same Temps as well and even in the snow. This tent is well worth the money, very durable, stands the test of strong winds well and perfect for a relatively tall guy like me.. Being able to stand upright inside is nice lol I will say that I camp with my other half and our 2 large sized dogs in the 10x10 and it's doable so long as the dogs don't want to be up running around. I dont think I would buy the bigger one if I did it again because this one is adequate. Unless I was using it for extended camps, like a week or more, the extra room isn't necessary for me.
hi mate. Did you get this in the States or Australia?
I got this in the states, but its my understanding that they're an Australian company. I really enjoy this tent.
I really like that tent. Thanks for the video
We like it too! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the ideas! Would adding a few strong bungees wrapped around the tarp help keep it in place??
Depending on the size of the dog I would think it'd work well! For our big dogs I don't think anything less than a ratchet strap would work lol
If you have a tent that needs the ladder down to support the weight of two dogs(ikamper actually states it can break the hinges if you put ~50 lbs on the edge without the legs supporting it) - you can pick up a telescoping ladder for ~50-100$ as well and use this in combination and it hooks onto the top rung of the RTT ladder. For a total of 100-150 - its half the price of just the marketed solutions and then you don't even have to wrap the ladder you climb up. Lots of clever solutions out there.
Agreed! Personally I was just interested in not carrying a bunch of extra things. I like multi use tools and the tarp serves this purpose as well as an obvious tarp for shade because I don't have a fancy awning yet. The legs are still supporting weight at this angle, just not enough to hold an adult human. Thank you for the extra ideas!
Thanks so much, very helpful, we were thinking this morning about having to build a ramp from the ground to the hood to the roof of my Jeep so that they could go in through the window, but that means added weight and a place we’d have to store it. Not ideal with two people and two dogs and camping stuff in a Jeep!
First of all, Thank you for the kind words! Secondly, I agree! We battle with weight too in this midsized truck and two dogs so I know exactly what you mean. That would be a neat idea if you can figure out the logistics of it... Hopefully this works out well for you too, just remember to keep a hold of the tarp so their weight doesn't pull it thru the rungs when they walk up it!
Ok you correct
Your video is inverse....body
Brilliant, thank you for the idea! You said "grommets" and I don't know if this is what you meant by it, but I immediately thought of "boat snaps." I had some lying around from customizing snaps on my ski gear, and then just did a little customizing our SoftTopper with a few extra boat snaps to integrate into our bed liner rails, so I have a tonnnnn of extra. I think I'm going to try using those and making "snaps" to hold it all in place, top, bottom and sides. Thinking of a "boat cover" and the pressure that's typically under (also SoftTopper sides) it should work just fine for 2 30lb puppy weights.
Thats actually a really good idea, I hadn't thought of that!! The grommets I was referring to are the brass pieces sometimes in the corners of a tarp that are typically used for tie down points with a rope. But I like that snap idea I might have to give that a go. Thank you for watching and thank you for the idea!! 🤝
Thank you! I was basically thinking the same thing, but haven't tried it. In fact I WAS reserved about buying a RTT because I know my dog would either refuse or break a leg on a ladder! LOL I will now be deciding on a tent and getting ready for next season because of you. Thank you. FYI Desert Armor is out of stock on their ramps, so... Guess that Guy that commented earlier is even more ignorant than he initially sounded. I was quite impressed with your reply. I'll be subscribing and watching more of your videos when it's not 2am!
I appreciate the kind words and I'm glad that I could help. I dont think you'll regret it. I absolutely love my RTT and even more so now that it's easy to get my pups up in it. Keep me updated on what you choose. There's so many options out there! Lol sometimes you gotta kill em with kindness i suppose, im not sure why people choose to be mean when unprovoked.. but it makes no difference to me as long as I can help other people.
great idea, thx
No problem! Thanks for watching!
I've been carrying my dog up and down but he's over 60 pounds now so its feeling a bit dangerous. Definitley almost fell backwards off the ladder this weekend... Great idea, thanks so much!
Oh yeah! Definitely an eye opener when that happens. My shepherd mix is a squirmy one so I didn't wanna end up on my back because of him! Glad it helped!!
How long did it take you to train them to use it? I have a folding ramp to get my dog in my truck (let alone my tent!) and he won't go on it. He gets his front paws on it and its wobbling all over the place 😩
Try to make it a bit more sturdy if possible, it seems like he's not sure it'll hold him. My doggos were used to me carrying them into the tent so they already knew that's where they needed to be. So when I wrapped the ladder just a few "come on" encouragement taps up the ladder to persuade them was all it took. A ramp to the truck is the next thing I need, since I've got the lift my one dog can't make it up lol
What lake was that?
Grant lake in California.
This is a crappy unsafe copy of the Desert Armor DOGGO Ramp
Thank you for checking out the video Billy with no content on his clearly NOT fake account. The only person that would be this worked up about me saving folks some money and not hurting their back is someone that thinks theyre losing money because of it. Like those people that make the overpriced ramp...So thanks for checking out my video guys! 😊🤙hope you have a wonderful day!
It freaks me out when the whole stove and pipe are red hot. And it is heating the wall tent well but is it dangerous having it that hot and can an explosion occur or anything else dangerous? I need to load it heavy on the cold nights. Good video.
No you can't risk an explosion, but getting the whole pipe red hot will reduce the life of your stove jack tremendously. I havemt had any issues with ambient heat messing with the tent walls but if you're concerned about it you could try moving the stove away from the wall more or using a heat reflector between the stove and wall to reflect heat away from the wall. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your review, I was thinking to buy a 23zero or a smittybilt, I found 23zero has better quality and value. My question is, is it too heavy for 2adult and 2 kids sleep with this tent on the rooftop, since the max load capacity is 150 Lb for the crossbar, is there any issue? Thanks
Thanks for watching! I too was originally gonna get the smitty, but 23 zero piqued my fancy. Honestly I was worried about the same thing, but I put 2 adults and two large dogs (70 & 95lbs) up with us at night and haven't seen any issues. Although it's worth mentioning that my "cross bars" are a diy rack made from 1"steel square tubing. Not sure if that effects it a whole bunch compared to commercially available racks, but I will say I'm not very gentle on gear and it's held up well for me. Even in severe wind.
@@TheStoicWolfe thanks
I ordered Gstove including 17 items April 28 2020. Order No: 100 3089. Receipt No; 5174-2548-3554-0073. I received 1st shipping 8 items April 2021. But Gstove does not make shipment until now. I do not receive 9 items. Gstove doesn't keep the promise. Gstove is bad company. 🤣
Now... could one live in this? Like instead of rv living do you think this would be a good alternative?
It depends. It's definitely doable, but you sacrifice the "living space" an rv has because it's a tent obviously. But it's totally comfortable enough to do so, we have an annex as well which is like a room that attaches off the front and encapsulates the ladder. We use it as a changing room or a place to leave our dogs resting most days but it's big enough to put an extra cot down there for a guest!
This is genius. I was just about to press the payment button on that expensive one you were referring to.
Thats awesome! I'm glad this could help! 🙌
My question is, you said it was your fault the piping changes colors because you got the stove too hot. How exactly is it that you got a stove too hot?? Is that something you can even control?? If so, please reveal. It seems that it’s not something you can control completely.
It is something you can control, but it actually takes effort to get the pipes glowing red. Which is what I did to damage the stove jack. I was attempting to see how hot i can make the inside of the tent... the answer is, uncomfortably hot hahaha.. What I've learned is, there's another part that you can use to minimize the destruction of the stove jack, it's like a sleeve that sits over the stove pipe and insulates the stove jack from the hot pipes...But its a cheap enough part that I'm not too worried about having to buy a new stove jack every so often.
What tent is that? And is that insulation inside???
This is the 23zero walkabout 62. I have an older video on my channel showing it in more detail... And yes that's a winter insulation liner that we've been trying out and it works well!
@@TheStoicWolfe man I’ve got the smittybilt xl tent. Wonder if other companies product would work inside.
@@thomasf4915 tbh I'm not sure. The fitment is pretty tight. Not alot of room for error. But if the dimensions of your tent match this one it might be worth a try? If nothing else you can return it or modify the hanging points to fit your application. Having that air buffer does help in the winter though, we had camped in 18 degrees f that night and on new years we were in 16 degrees with it. It's still chilly inside but alot less cold than it otherwise would be.
Is it tippy with 3 legs?
Surprisingly, no. It's incredibly stable. I've even cooked on the top of it with pans without hesitation. As long as the ground under your tent is relatively flat you won't have an issue.
Thanks for the idea! This worked perfectly. You saved me a few hundred bucks. I was thinking about buying that overpriced desert armor doggo ramp.
Thats awesome! 😁 I'm glad it worked for you too! I was considering the same product but just couldn't justify it, I knew there had to be another way.
Yes
