The Duke Supervises as I work on a Zenith Trans-Oceanic
I'm working on a Zenith Trans-Oceanic receiver, and experimenting with taking time-lapse videos of the process.
Last night I was doing some work on it and my cat The Duke decided to hang out to keep an eye on things. Someone has to make sure I don't break something!

Repairing an Antique Speaker Cone with Liquid Latex
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.2 года назад
I've been working on restoring this antique Howard 901-A radio, and one of its problems is that it has a pretty badly rotted and torn speaker cone. Since it's not a very rare or valuable radio, I decided to try a technique for repairing damaged speakers that I've been thinking about for a while- using tissue paper and liquid latex to cover holes and patch tears in the speaker cone. The results ...
Howard 901-A turned on for first time in 60-plus years
Просмотров 6112 года назад
I've been working on restoring an old Howard 901-A tabletop radio from around 1946 to working order. It's nothing special, but it was in absolutely dire shape when I got it. I'm pretty sure it hasn't been used since the 1950s. After replacing all the capacitors and most of the resistors, I fired it up and it worked without even having to align it! Picked up some local AM stations instantly. I'm...
EHV#6 - Reverse Engineering and Analyzing a Thyratron-Driven Selmer "Metronoma" from the 1950s
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.2 года назад
I was given this electromechanical metronome from the 1950s to go over for safety, and was surprised to find it had what I first thought was a vacuum tube in it. It turned out to be a gas discharge tube called a "Thyratron", which I found fascinating. In this video I discuss what a thyratron is, its principle of operation and how it works in this specific circuit, and also show how the circuit ...
EHV #6- Repairing and Restoring a DSI 3600A Frequency Counter (from 1978!)
Просмотров 7343 года назад
In this video I show you the steps I took to analyze and repair a DSI 3600A frequency counter, produced by DSI in 1978. In theory it'll work up to 600 MHz with the prescaler, but in the case of this one neither the direct nor the prescaled inputs were working. However, in the end I got it working well enough for my purposes!
EHV #5- Replacing the IF Relay on a Kenwood TS-130S (and much more)
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.3 года назад
Originally this video was to be about replacing the Omron LZN4 relay on the IF board of a Kenwood TS-130S amateur radio transceiver to fix the "desense" problem on switching from transmit to receive. On many older Kenwood transceivers like the TS-130S, the relays get a bit manky with oxidation and stop working properly. A symptom of this is when you switch from "Send" to "Receive" the transceiv...
EHV #4- Replacing the RF Attenuator Relay on a Kenwood TS-130S
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.3 года назад
This is the same Kenwood TS-130S I was showing in a previous video- it works, but after 40 years, it's got a few things that need fixing. Specifically, some relays on these old Kenwood transceivers tend to get a bit dodgy, their contacts get corroded and/or oxidized, and they don't work properly. In this case, the RF attenuator relaly was simply not working at all, so I replaced it with a NOS v...
EHV #3 - I was gifted a bunch of Amateur Radio (Ham radio) gear!
Просмотров 7403 года назад
A friend of mine who knows how much I enjoy amateur radio gifted me a bunch of older gear he didn't have any need for. In this video I "unbox" it and go through the stuff I got and how cool it is. Much of the gear is older, some from the 1960s, 70s' and 80s, but all appears to be functional or serviceable- in that it isn't beyond reasonable repair or restoration efforts. I'll be doing more vide...
A BK-100 "Coffin Bug" CW key in operation
Просмотров 1 тыс.3 года назад
I was given some radio equipment including this CW (Morse Code) key, which I was unfamiliar with. A few questions answered later and I was able to get it working. This is a "Coffin Bug" type of key, and is based on the Vibroplex design, which is a semi-automatic keyer. Dashes are done by pushing the paddle in one direction, dots are done automatically by pushing it the other direction. It saves...
EHV #2- I Made a Capacitor!
Просмотров 2933 года назад
On a whim I decided it would be interesting to make a capacitor out of tinfoil and wax paper. In this video: *I discuss capacitor theory and design * Show you a time lapse of me making my homemade capacitor * Show you how you can use an oscilloscope and signal generator to analyze a capacitor. * Analyze both an off-the-shelf capacitor and my homemade one. Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 04:37 Ti...
EHV #1- How Geiger Counters Work
Просмотров 5793 года назад
Were you ever curious about what exactly makes a Geiger Counter work? In this video I explain the basic principles of operation of a Geiger Counter and demonstrate one in operation. NOTES: * At 18:25 I say "alpha" particles, I should have said "beta". * Uranium doesn't emit very much beta or gamma radiation, but it does decay into other materials that do, which is why this Geiger counter can pi...
School Bus Pre-Trip Inspection
Просмотров 2,8 млн3 года назад
Before a school bus leaves the yard, it must go through a thorough pre-trip inspection. This is what one looks like. I recorded myself with a GoPro doing a pre-trip inspection on a school bus prior to a field trip. The second half of the video shows the drive to the school with the empty bus. If you've ever been curious about how a school bus is operated, this may be interesting to you.
Tearing down and replacing the tube in a TS-1 Mark 2 Microphone
Просмотров 6463 года назад
I had to replace the tube in my TS-1 Mark 2 microphone. This is the teardown and replacement process. NOTE: This video has some quality issues, including some blur, the audio has issues, and at some points framing problems. It is an experiment in using my GoPro for up close video recording, and while I learned quite a lot in this process, there's clearly some issues with the video. I'm using it...

Sorry I was wrong on the 100 ohm resistor it should be 10 ohms.

I also have one of these counters and it is working. The pre-scale input is a 100 ohm 10%, and the Direct input is a 47 ohm 10%. They both look to be 1/4 watt but I would use 1/2 watt for sure. The bigger electrolytic is 16v 47uf mine is an ECI and is yellow, it looks like yours is black. The other smaller electrolytic is Grey and is 16v 22uf. I don't have a yellow foil type cap like yours has. I have the 3600A manual and would be glad to make a copy and send it to you via email (PDF of course) I have had mine operating and the best I have gotten so far is a 4 cycle spread, 2 above and 2 below. It doesn't seem to be very stable but when I replace the two electrolytics it may help. PS on page three of the manual it has a "WARNING!!" DO NOT TRANSMIT DIRECTLY INTO THE COUNTER. They give details on a T connector you can build and it will handle up to 250 watts. Tks for the video GR

You never forget something you learned from someone other than a parent or teacher. I went to school during the energy crisis, with gas rationing, extended daylight saving time and constant reminders to turn off all unnecessary lights. One kid asked the school bus driver why he has the headlights on the middle of the day, thinking it is a waste of energy. The driver said, "Safety comes first. Then comes conservation."

from an old carpet layer that has grown up with using latex, and I might add that it was probably only 60 per cent pure so you could use a thin wipe over at the split .it is the same product that they make condoms out off so it will stretch and move with the vibration of the cone😃

This one is a rear engine, but some Type D (flat-nosed or "transit" types) do have front engines. There's a cover called the "doghouse" over them between the driver and the front door on front-engine flat-front buses.
