Fall color hike in Arizona you have to see to believe - Ash Creek to Bassett Peak
Bassett Peak is a nice enough destination all on its own, with large trees lining the bottom half, an interesting ridgeline, and 360° views at the summit. However, where this trail really shines is in the fall when the maples turn into fiery shades of red, yellow, and orange along Ash Creek. Those continuing on to the summit will face a few overgrown spots, tricky navigation to the peak, and some loose footing.

Camelback Mountain is a Phoenix classic hike with great views of the city that everyone has to do at least once. One of the many gems in West Clear Creek, Maiden Falls cannot be adequately described in words or photographs. A tranquil pool above feeds the falls, flowing along a twisting watercourse before tumbling down a wall painted in a kaleidoscope of colors. To get here, you’ll have to brave the rough road, the boulder hopping, the swims, and the strenuous exit hike. It ain’t no joke hiking out of her...

@@wildpathsaz yeah i remember his name Blankenship ive never seen it anywhere else
I hiked this mountain with a roomie back in 2010. What a great hike. Only for a quarter of the distance up the trail will you find a discernable path, the rest of the way is marked by rock pile markers, and it gets kind of wild near the top. I didn't know it at the time, but this hike was really a milestone in my life, where my path could've went different ways. I had worked over eight years at one company, had a little over ten years left at that company at the time, and I could've begun and finished college, could've changed my entire life trajectory in different ways. It was kind of spiritual moment or life denouement experience. The roomie I had at the time was in a lost phase, didn't know what to do with his life, but he offered me a room for 300 bucks a month. I lived with him two years and boy I could've done different things with my life back in those days rather than all the partying. This roomie I had back then found his path, but it took him a long time of soul searching, and he's living his destiny, a good one as a licensed travel teacher. Hike this mountain not for the fun but for its memory because the whole experience really has sat on my conscience even after 14 years! You might find out names in the logbook up there on the top, we also drew some funny pictures.
Sadly, the mailbox at the summit is repeatedly removed, but usually someone else replaces it soon after. So, there is no log book going back that far. I also find the mountains to be a place of inspiration and contemplation where life comes into greater focus. Glad this hike meant so much to you. Will you return one day?
“ Anybody gonna cry “! Lmao, way to cheer them up! You ladies awesome, hope April is doing better. It’s finally cooling off, wahoo! Thanks for sharing, Happy Hiking!
I do what I can 😂 April skipped breakfast that morning, so she was having an off day. We did the Zion traverse since then, and she kicked butt. She’s back on her game!
@ Awesome possum! Boys and I are heading to WCC for an in n out near Wilber Canyon. Hope it’s not too cold yet. You ladies keep at it, a lot of us love your videos!
No doubt, you girls are badass!! It made me sweat just watching you climb Camelback twice 🥵🥵🥵🥵 Is Ninja Girl alright?
She thinks it was because she didn’t have any breakfast that morning. We’ve gone hiking since then and she was fine. Thanks for checking!

This is awesome I camp near here all the time and I’ve been wanting to explore!! Thanks for posting
Awesome - hope you get a chance to get out there!

😂 agreed
What month in particular was this, just curious. Thanks for making such a cool video. What a unique experience.
Thank you! This was near the end of January. A snowstorm rolled in a few days before our hike. Luckily, other hikers broke the trail after the snow, but the conditions made it too treacherous to visit other areas like Melody Arch.
I should be working haha but your videos keep coming up and is a great excuse to procrastinate. I was at clear creek around same time you all were. I bought one of those rods but still haven't tried it... maybe I'm glad I haven't haha And they often lengthen trails on me on the way out too.
🤣 well thanks for watching! What did you do while you were there? We love West Clear Creek - the water temps were still nice too. ☀️ 💦
@@wildpathsaz we swam. Went to wet beaver creek, fossil, oak Creek, and I camped on bluff above clear Creek. Kind of wonder if that rough road wasn't same one I drove down in my video I posted yesterday. It was on top of cedar flats.
In my experience, almost all the roads into West Clear Creek are pretty bad 😩
@@wildpathsaz the one by clear Creek campground isn't too bad. Then the one I took up cedar flats was good too. Either a car could handle. However when I shot off cedar flats on another road there were large rocks. Would have been handy to have somebody watch while I drove.
Did you park on cedar flats? I wonder if I was just where you parked..
We parked on the south side of WCC - end of forest road 142J
@@wildpathsaz trying to find 142J on a topo map. Not much luck... I was on North side though. Looks like you were possibly near cedar mountain at one point? I camped directly to north of West Clear Creek and to east of it on butte. Near Blodgett Basin trail into the Bull Pen. I've not done much exploring up those drainages though as my friend I go up there with doesn't do too much hiking. We mainly swam at park and swim stuff. Pretty awesome none the less! Really cool to see more of the creek in your video.
It’s near Cash Tank on the south side, east of where you were. Google Maps has a pin on Hanging Gardens. It’s a great spot, but the rugged roads and lack of trail mean you have to work for it. I guess that keeps the crowds away, so that’s good! Glad you enjoyed your time there - I will have to go check out your latest video.
@@wildpathsaz oh cool I will look that up on the map. Always looking for new adventures. Thanks for the great video.

Thank You Fawn for hauling out that tent 👍 ( WCC Thanks you too) it's a amazing beautiful place and we need to keep it that way - Happy Trails
Luckily there wasn’t a lot of trash, but it’s disappointing to see people leaving stuff down there. It’s also just strange that someone would abandon what looked like their entire camp. Makes you wonder what happened.
Pretty entertaining! Y’all seem fun to hike with 😂
Thanks! We do have a lot of fun out there. Thanks for watching!
Hello wild paths! We wrote to you last video in regards to my 12 year old daughter. We went to teddy bear rock, south mountain park. We rappeled and map read. I got an entire day with my daughter... so, thanks. She loved it. She ask's.. does your channel have any merchandise to buy? Thank you so very much. Thank you
So happy to hear! Hope she enjoyed her new gear and that you have many more adventures together to come. Unfortunately we don’t have a store yet, but we have been working on some ideas. We do have a sticker, so if you send your mailing address to wildpathsaz@gmail.com we will send her one for free 😁
I love this hike! I can't wait to be able to get back to "The Supes."
Same! It’s about that time!
Who knew how many amazing places are in Arizona! Minus the spiders. Awesome video!
So true - you can spend a lifetime and never see it all.

y'all had dry feet all the way to the narrows?! I guess it's just a skill issue on my end 😅

The crosses are placed where their bodies were found.
Such a somber sight to see
i would be too scared to go into the tent;;
We didn’t realize they would come out at night when we set up the tent, and by then we had no choice 😱
Note to self,no camping at the narrows
Right? We marked it as Spiderhaven on our GPX file - won’t make that mistake again 😂
Well that was entertaining!
lol it’s always an adventure
I would be the 1st one to sign up for it if you post a trip! you gals are so fun! Also I couldn't open the link for some reasons~

@@wildpathsaz Definitely! I did cabin loop 3 weeks ago follow the recommendation on your website! very fun! thanks and keep up the great work!!!!
Oh I love that one!! Did you sleep on the rim? So magical to wake up to that view 😍😍😍
@@wildpathsaz Unfortunately, we didn’t because we started a bit late. We made a strategic decision to stay at the Barebeshop Spring, which was also great. However, the humidity was crazy-around 74%-and the lowest temperature was 40°C~ My friend’s chair even froze overnight, hahaha! But we did have lunch at the campsite you recommended, and the view was fantastic!🤩
@@SuperMeiMei Barbershop Spring is so beautiful! Great choice, and I'm glad you got to enjoy lunch on the rim. When we hiked Drew Trail recently, we noticed a number of drive-in campsites at the top of the trail that had some really awesome views. Two guys had hammocks set up right on the precipice, and it looked amazing! So - since you're a backpacker, I'll let you know we're backpacking Thunder River in the Grand Canyon next week. Have you done any backpacking there? Excited and a tiny bit nervous because I heard it's pretty intense, but I also heard it's one of the best. I have a couple other trails there I hope to do in the coming year. So many trails, so little time...
Your videos are just so much fun! What a great group! And yes, the Falls are one of the most beautiful places in our state! We’re planning in going so I can show the boys where Wilber Canyon drops in. Prolly right after Halloween. As always, thanks for Sharing and Happy Hiking!
Sounds a bit chilly! But maybe the spiders will leave you alone. It was a good Halloween hike, though 😆 Hillary and Heather were supposed to be there but had to cancel - they missed out on the spider infestation
@@wildpathsaz Which one is the critter lover? Is that Heather? She would have been in her element with the spiders! Did you see any ringtail cats? We almost always see them down around the fall! Where to next, it’s supposed to finally be cooling off? Again, thanks for sharing !
Well Heather apparently loves crawdads, but it’s April who picks up tarantulas, caterpillars, grasshoppers, and ladybugs and puts them on her face
I haven’t seen any ringtail cats! Maybe we don’t know how to look for them?
Visit wildpathsaz.com/maiden-falls/ for more details and a map.
Hmmm... I need to get a car with 4WD so I can check this out!
Yes you do! Put it on your wish list 😉
Thanks again for another amazing adventure. My daughter now has her own black diamond harness. She is 12. Thanks for the positive influences... she loves the content
We cannot love this enough! One of our founding goals was to inspire women, but 80% of our viewers are male, so this is just awesome to hear. I hope she is able to make use of that harness and develop into a lifetime adventurer. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, that Garmin didn’t stand a chance😂
I knew better, but I did it anyway, so I deserved it. The new one is supposed to arrive today! Well, it's a refurbished one that Garmin traded me for a small fraction of what it would cost new.
What a beautiful place! Looks hard to get to but I’m sure it’s worth it. I’m glad you’re getting a new Garmin! Awesome video!!
We love every place we’ve ever been on West Clear Creek - very rugged but mostly beautiful and unspoiled. The Garmin arrives Monday!!
Yeah they're invasive too. I certainly wouldn't say you ladies are BADASS sorry bout it LOL. Crawdads are destroying watersheds and entire ecosystems. this makes it obvious
Right, which makes it all the more annoying that they are there 😫. I read that Arizona has no native crayfish.
I want to go explore with you two ladies.
Dont avoid those sharp rocks hahaha
😂 makes for a dramatic shot 😜
You are so right, one of the most beautiful places in our state! We have dropped a vehicle where you parked , drove another to the headwaters near Tramway and gone down the canyon to Hanging Gardens. As always, thanks for sharing and Happy Hiking!
That sounds cool. We’re planning on more WCC tomorrow… I wouldn’t mind seeing it all.
@@wildpathsaz In the 80s we did a two week trip, dropped in above the headwaters at Happy Jack. Went all the way down to the Gardens. Spent some extra time at Wilber Canyon. That was one of the best trips we’ve made. If I remember correctly the next year we did Mormon Lake to Payson, another epic trip. Gotta love Arizona!
@@rvtech101 we just did an overnight trip to Maiden Falls - they are much better in person than the pictures! West Clear Creek is an absolute gem, although we could have done with fewer daddy long leg spiders. Once we cleared them away enough to get in the tent, we knew we weren't coming out until morning no matter what 😆
@@wildpathsaz Lol,awesome, I’m jealous ! Scared of spiders, what are you, a bunch of gir, oops! Never mind! Did you spot any ringtail cats? I hope that blind dog found its home. I always thought slot rock referred to the slot on the right portion of the formation at 3:05 as opposed to the one you went through more left center. That’s what I go through when I have hiked here. Some dumb grafiti in there
Well, there are a lot of slot-like formations in the area and none have official names, so I guess it can be whatever you want it to be! 🤷♀️ We once climbed part way up the formations across the trail from the hand and found a deep chasm that we couldn’t see the bottom of. I vowed to bring a rope with me one day and explore it - I did go back and it was a very cool rappel. There were bolts, so we obviously were not the first. We popped out the bottom by the hand.
