I spoke to Beta Marine today - and they said! I should take the heat exchanger apart every couple of years! Who knew not me that's for sure
You seem to be monitoring this so I will ask you a question - I have a beta marine engine - my heat exchanger has one end like a bell with one nut in the middle - the other end just has a cap with - no nut on it? How does that come off
As far as I know they have a centre nut each end. Have you watched part 1 ? Beta have modified new engines, they have three bolts each end.
Yes I see it now - I do have one nut on either side as you said
The impeller was new a couple days old- I have a beta 60 and I have a small heat exchanger before the engine for my velvet drive transmission - it was the small heat exchanger that blew the hose off - and all the little tubes have thin pieces of the impeller in them so not much raw water could go though. Iam taking everything apart tomorrow
My engine kept overheating - then yesterday the hose attached to the heat exchanger blew off while we were under way- unaware of this we kept driving - until then engine choked out- and then we put up a sail and called for a tow- after we got in I noticed that the bilge had completely filled with seawater - 100s of gallons. When trying to figure out where it came from we saw the hose off and the end of the small heat exchanger for the transmission filled with little pieces of the impeller
Criky o'rilley! Which Beta engine do you have? I always monitor engine temp whilst under motor. Do you think the hose clip was loose? I have never experienced an impeller breaking up, how old is it?
Thank you - I'm going to try all this on Monday
Thank you for your video very informative- how do you drain the anti freeze?
There is a drain tap but I normally just let it drain into a plastic pot from hose when I remove it
It seems like a lot of complexity, but it is certainly comprehensive.
Looking at the equation for revs per minute again. For a 12 pole alternator it is simply freq x 10 = RPM. 120/12= 10 in this case.
There is two types of anode one for fresh water and one for sea water .
if anyone knows the name of the song that the Assembly lane guys are singing? Please let me know, because i cant seem to find it!
You are right of course but it's just the title. I did not go round the island of Ireland.
Long time sailor here. Just wanted to thank you for posting your circumnavigation. This info is really helpful!
I wished I had filmed more but I am glad you can see what I did film. Thankyou
Norther Ireland is not part of Britain, it is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
I removed the H/E to do this job. Couldn't get a leakproof seal otherwise. I kept getting flow between seawater and freshwater side through o-ring seal.
What is the H/E?
Heat exchanger.
Oh silly me of course! You mean you unbolted the housing and then assembled it? Seems like a lot of extra work. I have done this job twice now with it in situ but as I said in the video i did have a failed attempt and had to drain the system and start again.
After 3 attempts of re-assembling, I decided to take the heat exchanger off. Was very easy. No corrosion on any of the bolts. I have some erosion of the aluminum at the exhaust end. I epoxied, then sanded, then re- assembled and no leaks. I never did have any external leaks. Only leaked between the 2 liquids.
That is very interesting, not sure how you can really tell how much water crosses the water to water seal? I guess the fresh water tank would drop down. Or go up!
Hi. Where did you get the longer anodes from? Only place I can find is Zincsmart but sadly they're now closed.

Great video. Subscribed, but I agree ease off on the music. It’s a bit over powering
Good content. Please you don’t need to add music. The nat sound is all you need with your voice over. Well done with your content
Thanks for the comment but i enjoy having a bit of music in background, I will try to tone down a bit in future videos!
Music in the background is OK but a bit loud I just came across your voyages I too am a single handed sailor an old Moody 33Mk2
Thanks for comment. Yes but didn't have my clamp on meter with me. I have saved it for a winter job!
Looks you had nice adventure without no drama :) About your battery . When you start charging your battery just put clamp meter on alternator output and will see how many amperes really are there.
Do the O rings shrink over time? I have only one ring i fished out … it wasnt seated properly, thats why i had so much corrosion at my exaust connection…
Very helpful. I'm just about to reassemble mine on a Beta 60 with the same "one-bolt" cup. When I took it apart, the O-rings were mounted on the tube stack itself. You placed them in the cups, I believe. Any difference?
They do stick to the end of the inner stack. Basically the o ring sits on the bevelled egde and squeezed up between the cup and stack ends.
@@thewaveringwarrior Thanks. I got it working, no leaking. Yet.
I have a beta marine 20 and cannot find a dealer who sells the heat exchanger service kit which includes the bonded seal washers, mine need replacing where did you get your service kit please?
Have plans to modify a cooler in a similar way. Going to use a cheap cpu AIO cooler akasa 3,5" fan controller Akasa 80W DC/DC power supply. Because fan controller has 3 edjustments can control fans, pump and peltier separately. Parts cost about 100€ Inside the fridge going to use the original heatsink cut down to size and a laptop fan to blow air through the heatsink. This way the cold air will circulate and cool the fridge faster.
Could also use something like raspberry pi zero or arduino, instead of the manual fan controller. You can monitor the inside temperature of the fridge with those and have it turn off when its cold enough. And turn back on when needed. This would lower the power consumption even more
I believe the recommendation is not to use PTFE tape on the anode threads as it impedes the electrical circuit needed to make the anode effective. There was none on the OEM anode. Thoughts?
There should be contact through the PTFE because it tears through on the thread. You could always check conductivity buy using an ohm meter.
whats the benefit of the tape?
@@dreamconjurestops it leaking
Hi mate, I see in your spare parts you have ordered you have got mushy peas, please could you explain where these go, im trying to put my heat exchanger back together but am at a loss as what to do with the peas! Also is it brand specific? I couldn't find them on the beta website. Thankyou
Will this work with salt water? Thank you
Only with a heat exchanger
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Argentina.
A im hoping to get on of the freg set ups for my RV . If u think it would work well. Send me your email address. So we can talk more. Thank u for the time .
less spoken, more visual
I made similar system, but peltier start heating instead of cooling, after ten minutes. Why so ?? I.e. it gives excellent cooling till ten minutes. Then suddenly start heating Any answers
You need a bigger heat sink or more active cooling on the hot side.
Nice! Exactly what i was looking for. Email please 🙏
Tech ingredients did a similar system
Well this is neat! We just did a major fridge rebuild/reinsulation on our boat a few months back... and just got the video on RUclips. We would love to hear your thoughts!
Can you email me please. davelond567@live.co.uk. regarding the 35 worrior. Thanks
Hi, I'm going to look at a 35 worrior. I'm not sure the age etc. I would like to speak to you about yours. You can find me via Facebook. Thanks Dave
If this boat is ever up for sale let me know Im looking for one but cant seem to find any
What is your email
love that little ship she is a star. looks like a great setup.noe on yhe hydrovane.
Well done Nick and Richard I enjoyed a glimsy of the journey what is the running water sound?
Am I the first to comment Nick? Nicely done. Beautiful scenery - now I can see what I missed.
