Xu Shi Xi explaining the process of training and what is meant by External vs Internal
Просмотров 4063 месяца назад
This is part of a larger interview Xu Shifu gave one night in Beijing during the fall of 2015. He wished to explain the concepts of how to train progressively to gain both external and internal skills - using external training first and moving into internal training as one progressed. #baguazhang #kungfu #八卦掌 #martialarts #功夫 #徐世熙

Xu Shi Xi describes 4 basic types of Baguazhang stepping methods. These are not all of the stepping methods but rather 4 basic methods outside of the common 趟泥步 Mud Wading Step. The include: 自然步 Natural Stepping, 措步 Rubbing Step, 勾拉步 Hooking Pulling Step,蹬踏步 Dēng Tà Step (kicking with the bottom of the foot and then pressing with the toes). Xu would often say that Hooking Pulling stepping is wh...

春節快樂!Happy Spring Festival! On the eve of Lunar New Year 除夕 Chu Xi, I’d like to take a minute to talk a bit about striking in Yin Style Baguazhang as it is the most strike heavy Baguazhang system of all the lineages depending on how you train it. The methods employed im Yin style often mirror techniques that are seen in Shaolin and Chuo Jiao to name a few, with the attacks being quite direct wi...
Xu Shi Xi demonstrates Yin style Baguazhang Palm change strategies
Просмотров 6768 месяцев назад
Yin style Baguazhang is immense. Many lineages of Yin style have extensive palm changes generally based on variations and additions added onto what ever the basic palms are. In this way it allows the system to unfold in a way where palm changes aren’t always so foreign to a practitioner as they move through the system because they’ve seen elements of the movements before. With this change as on...

    In the beginning, external movements guide the flow of chi. With prolonged practice, the internal chi becomes the force that drives the body's movement.

    What does 'emitting qi' means precisely? I have heard it used as an abstract idea or a physical energy I assume you mean the latter. I would love to learn more about these Daoyin exercises.

    • @DiSanGuoShuGuan
      @DiSanGuoShuGuan 8 месяцев назад

      It means both depending on what the purpose of the training with. Linguistically if you look at how the concept of 氣 Qì is used in Chinese it is always referring to a connectedness, a relationship between two or more things. And the varying ways to look at that connectedness and its results are both referred to as 氣. Hence the concept is something not in English. The connectedness of the chain of events between pushing off the ground through the leg up through the hip through the back and shoulders to swing a bat or a punch is about the relationship between the ground and the links in the chain up the body and through the bat and those physical concepts are referred to sometimes in context of Qi, the relationship of that connected path followed by 發力 Fā Lì emitting force or power. In Chinese medicine the connectedness of the breath and the movements to lead 氣 Qi and 血 Blood throughout the body is referred to as 意帶氣 the mind leading the qi. Then it emits out through the hands. To do this you envision it as you would drilling something like shadow boxing with an opponent visualizing your strikes and their effect. Overtime you build a connection between the movements and the intended action. This can (as long as the proper principles are applied) result is the desired result - the power emission of emission of Qi in Chinese qi gong from the hands or a part of the body. Ultimately it should happen naturally without much effort similar to a well trained jab or walking down the street. We walk every day and as such become so good at walking it becomes effortless .

      Well, don't forget he spent a great deal of time on missions in Mongolia and Manchuria, which means he spent quite a bit of time in China during the 1920s. That was the time Baguazhang, which was created by Donghaichuan in the mid to late 19th century, had perfected itself as a complete system with thr 3rd generation Masters. I have no doubt that O Sensei was exposed to the art while he was out there in some way. There were some students of his who claimed the way he taught his art changed when he returned from China. How exactly, who knows, but I always found it interesting, especially since Baguazhang was around before O Sensei finally created Aikido as something unique from his Daito Ryu origins.
