My theory regarding the red light protein: i think bladee is refering to him going outside in the night and not really getting sunlight, that and the fact that hes from sweden because its literally darker there (i live in norway btw its the same here). Considering he kinda writes in a swedish way “red light protein i dream about them” suggests he dreams about the proteins because he lacks them.

It's shocking how good this sequel was. The sequel to me was about the dangers of not growing up, and keeping the character flaws of your youth without learning anything from your traumas and mistakes.

In the book, Begbie is explained as being more lighthearted when he was younger but he started believing the hype about him being a mental case and he changed to live up to the myth about himself. Also Renton has a brother in the army who gets killed by a roadside bomb in Northern Ireland. You should read it. Once you get past the phonetic writing style (Say it in a Scots accent type thing)

I genuinely believe that the best way to view these 2 movies (and I know it's impossible for some people) is to have seen the first back when it came out in your late teens/early 20's as I did, then see the sequel as an older person. The sequel hits like a freight train when you watch it and remember the original. I love both!

I lived in Lanarkshire,basically right in between Glasgow and Edinburgh and when this came out heroin wasn’t a problem here. We knew about it but when this movie was released it made us ,well me and my friends look down and very wary of users of it. All the while we were regular users of weed,speed and ecstasy.

There’s a great line in little miss sunshine Alan Arkin has “ when you’re young you’d be crazy to do heroin but when you’re my age you’d be crazy not to”

Trainspotting two was total BS. As a junkie I can assure you from a life of experience that barely any junkies EVER end up as well off the group did in T2. It was a stupid fantasy. Junkies make a horrible mistake usually when they’re still fckn children that they either die from early on or struggle with and pay for for the rest of their lives. And they’re supposed to end up like that. Nothing but eugenics and population control. Modern day human sacrifices. Its all played out according to plan since the mid twentieth century. Technology and modernity allowed for an unsustainable population boom where even the dysgenics are taken care of and have offspring and are kept alive. Idiocracy but much darker in reality. The drug culture was dropped in on society and carefully propagated, with each generation finding themselves in a more and more saturated and tempting environment with absolutely an abysmal joke of a “support system” from a malicious government if they find themselves desperately trying to quit. It doesn’t end up like T2. It ends in permanent lonely struggle or a premature death in despair. Modern junkies are sacrifices for a better future. Weeding out the undesirable genes. Same with the mentally ill which includes most junkies who live in a constant state of trying to self medicate a mental illness they can’t find any help for in the system that doesn’t want to help them. But junkies aren’t pussies brotha. A lot of them aren’t anyway. They live tough lives you could never imagine living and endure suffering you’d never believe. And they’re suffering for your children to have a better future. Giving their lives so that our young don’t live in a crowded hell hole with not enough resources to sustain them. So put some respect on our name, dick.

The second film is Renton and all the other characters facing themselves after running from it for 20 years. How can you grow and have a future that means anything if you don’t know how you got to where you are? Choosing life means a life that’s yours, not the one that will impress people, not the one you copied from someone else. When Franco’s son stands up to him it really reinforces the message. You can very easily fall into a life you hate, it takes the same courage and determination to get clean off drugs as it does to face your past mistakes, or recognize the life you are living is not the one you want so it’s on you to make changes. You gotta put in the work for life once you choose it and you have to face your past to feel like you deserve it. A lot of the second film was the 12 steps in action. It’s never too late.

A good vid. But unfortunately the creator of this review will probably have to wait 20 years before you truly get it. And part of it can’t be recovered which was the world of the 90’s. Very different times in the world when the original was set. By the time the sequel came out the world was sleepwalking into a world war (still is but now we actually can see it happening more clearly), not to mention a pandemic. So the setting of a working class background where there was a lot of heroine around, was off-set by a more peaceful world environment. It was before 9/11, which is when the world began to slowly move to where we are today. So it’ll be a strange one for the young people of today in 20 years from now, when their younger memories will be under a shadow of a world that was in a negative transition. But also you kind of also need to be at that midlife crisis age. Where you want to know you’ve “still got it”. The names have changed from Renton to Mark etc, it’s all part of how as we get older, those names we used to use fade for the proper names. So much I could say but it’s definitely a kind of autobiographical look into the feelings of the author and director now vs then. They’ve changed as people, they’re middle aged and now have that bag full of memories fond and bad, and they all contribute to the person they are today. To put it into drugs terms, when you’re 16,18,20 you’re not thinking you’ll be the one who gets addicted. That’s not on your radar, you don’t think you’ll die early. But when you’re older, you’ve seen these things close up, so you have real life experience, rather than some middle aged person warning you, and that’s powerful. So you think twice before doing some of the things you might have done without giving it a second thought. You wish you knew then what you know now. But life’s great irony is the wisdom comes when you start losing your looks. Hence Renton at the gym etc. It’s all there.

“It’s shite being Scottish” has been a quote I use regularly since this film.

Skag Boys really completes it all presenting a clear picture of history in Scotland just prior to Renton getting involved with drugs and his reasons for it. I remember I was starting my 3rd year of art school when Trainspotting came out, that summer I was in Ireland, and saw the posters, then got to see it in the fall back in Philadelphia. Saw it twice or 3 times.. then read all of Irvine Welsh's books. It was truly a Zeitgeist for me. Transition from punk to rave culture, and then 20 years later the sequel made me feel like I grew up with them. (funny thing I heard later, that the two girls eating ice cream in London were in art school with me at Tyler in Philadelphia and on a summer trip the year prior, I always thought they looked familiar in the film) It's also interesting how T2 turned out so different from the book Porno, but one key part that was kept was Spud being an aspiring writer, so he could point out Begbie's story.

The biggest disappointment of the second movie is that they don't film porn there. That was literally what the book about.

They don’t relapse, the drug scene comes after they’ve mentioned their trauma and shows the old instinct to succumb to old coping mechanisms. It’s showing what is in their head, reality is when they come back around in the club.
