This channel is for posterity I guess. Just to talk about music and whatever else comes to mind.

This was always one of my favorite Peggy Lee songs. I found out the other night that it’s actually kind of a blues song. So I adapted it. This one is fun to sing. If you guys like it, please make sure to listen to Peggy’s version

Just a little video. Every day I record but most of the times nothing feels good enough to upload. This is a perfect example. But you guys can learn with me! It’s on an A harmonica in first position. You will need to be able to bend well! Most of the work is on holes 1-4 and then again on holes 7-10. I also display blow bending in this video on the high end of the harp. Something I’ve never don...

This is a pretty vulnerable video. And I’ll probably delete it soon. But this is genuinely how I felt today. How I’ve been feeling for a long time now. This video was hard to make, and I feel pathetic uploading it. But I just had to rant. I had nobody to talk to Come one, come all to witness this pathetic mess before I wake up tomorrow and delete this garbage ass video that makes no sense

Have you tried the Easttop lucky 13? I think that extra holes have a very mellow sound
@@josemarcosmonteiro1752 I have owned 2 of them, but had to return them. The lower reeds have windsavers on them that make a noise I don’t really like. I think it could be a great harmonica if the design was improved a little bit.
Hey 👋 Greetings from across the pond (Scotland 🏴) Iv'e subbed, why ? Well as a (Don't practice enough) harmonica player, anything "harp" I'm gonna have a look. Good video, keep the faith 👍🏴👍😁
Wow. Tabs 🙏
Very cool man.
Hello there! I am from Romania and just started to play harmonica 4 months ago, I bought 5 harmonicas so far :)) but marine band 1896 its the best one. There's only one guy who can play blues harp in Romania, his name is Marcian Petrescu if you wanna check, he is a friend of Sugar Blue. And I'll be the second romanian blues harp player :)) If you want to know more about Romania, check out my channel VHS90Romania
I am new the the harp. Got a cheap one as a bit of a joke but it is great get to play it everyday driving around. Always got it in my pocket. Play the sax also but it’s so loud. And you got to set time aside to play but don’t have to do that with the harp. Setting the time aside to do it is hard with having a family. Keep it up like your vids.
Harp in nature is the best!
Bye bye bird , got me interested in low tuned harmonicas classic tune !
I used to use paper😂 but I recently bought the East Top repair kit it's been a revelation, I've tuned 8 harps thus far and saved two from the harmonica grave yard. I definitely want to learn how to customize harps. I love canned heat too, always in the shadow of the Brit blues bands but I think Canned heat are a vastly underrated band. And yes Alan was one of the first white boy harp players and to me he was one of the best

I came here to listen to your harmonica experiences, not pot smoking. I grew up around junkies. Hardcore. Heroin addicts. Crack cocaine did a number on my culture and community. My stepson died at a young age from fentanyl. Drug use is such a personal thing, one should keep it to themselves. I saw a video of Adam Gussow, and he mentioned his cocaine usage. I didn't know anything about it, didn't want to know anything about something so personal, and it made me view him differently than the esteem I held him at. I used to work with bands, and I saw drug usage and its destruction. My favorite musician, Charles Christopher "Yardbird" Parker, was a drug addict along with many of the jazz musicians I love. Drugs and drug talk turn me off.
@@claydobbins9342 then get lost bitch, this is my channel and I’ll talk about whatever I want. You clearly have a very skewed view on the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Let me give you some advice, go try some opiates or stimulants and live a little. You’re pathetic Clay.
@@claydobbins9342 oh yeah and one more thing, Parker would not have been the great musician he was without drugs, period. If you can’t even admit that to yourself, you must not know what it’s like to play under the influence of heavy narcotics. Because it works and there’s a very real reason people use it, musicians especially.
@@formansbasement2311 I have listened to Parker for over 65 years or more. I know his biography very well. He was hooked at age 14 and always admitted he regretted it. He told other musicians that was not the key to his skill and talent. You are not aware of the many hours Parker practiced. Parker was upset when other musicians followed in his pattern by using drugs. Drugs sent Parker to jail, to the mental asylum, caused him to be an alcoholic (another drug), caused him lose his cabaret card, and more. Before you try to tell me about the genius of Bird, please check out this young woman who researched Bird for her Internet channel: Charlie Yardbird Parker Jr. Scandalous Old Hollywood Scandals by Ashley Says So. I doubt if you'd watch her presentation because you don't want to be wrong in your assessment, but you should. It is easier for me to refer you to her channel than for me to tell you what I know about Parker, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Whitney Houston, and many, many, many more. Please, check it out, and then let's talk.
@@formansbasement2311 Oh, BTW, Bird was 34 years of age when all of his organs shutdown. The coroner thought that he was 63.
@@formansbasement2311 I have friends, such as jazz artist Nancy King who knew Bird when she was half his age. Leroy Vinnegar (who is no longer with us), another friend who knew and played with Bird. Check out AshleySaysSo: Charlie Yardbird Parker.
You need to listen to Junior Wells album HOODO MAN BLUES. I believe all of the songs are in D except for a couple of songs in G. this is the album that taught me how to play.

One trick to find inspiration more easily at least for composition is to have either the radio or tv on as background noise. Not too loud but just there. It puts the brain in a sort of open, dream mode. There are even scientific studies backing this. They call it "shower effect" if I remember well. I didn't understand why I loved so much to play guitar while watching movies…
@@cyberprimate yeah I definitely do this too! Thanks for watching
For better or worse, this is the most interestingly honest video I've seen in a long, long time. It sounds to me like for whatever reason you have had to take a step backwards in your life. Open Mic nights in Lake Elsinore are great but they are significantly beneath your talent grade. Having heard you play on this channel I think you need to go somewhere where your talent is appreciated, be it Nashville, Portland, Chicago, Austin---wherever. You are among the very best at what you do. Prioritize, pack your bags and move forward.
@@RockessentialTim I wish that was a realistic possibility. I just don’t think that would work. I have zero dollars and my cars a piece of junk. I have no connections in music whatsoever and there is really just about no demand for blues harmonica players. I also can’t play on demand, only when the moment strikes. The sound of it is nice, but in 2024 that just isn’t a possibility. I’m sure if I really tried I could get over to one of those places, but I would quickly perish while trying to find work. I’m also not very good at the musical aspect of things. I can’t count, my timing is awful, don’t know much about theory or positions either.
@@formansbasement2311 Fair enough, but for whatever its worth I'm a retired old guy who worked in the music biz for most of my life and I can tell you that the thing that trumps all the obstacles you've listed is talent, and believe me not everyone is as blessed with it as you are. Please continue to put out the vids. Work and network, you'll get there.
Alan's playing inspired me to play harp, I believe him to be the best harmonica player I've ever heard, I've never tried to re- tune my harps as the Special Twenties are going about $50 + and I can't afford to take a chance on fuckin' them up. However, your idea about using cheap- o harps to experiment with re- tuning. I'd like to suggest the Fender line of harmonicas which run around 7 bucks and are not bad harps. And your harp distortion device is totally butt kickin'! Great playing!
I now realise why I could never play the Blind Owl's solo on On the Road Again. I've been playing since the late 60s and never thought to customise. I keep the reeds working by dropping them in whisky occasionally, but that's all. Al Wilson's playing is, in my view, far superior to that of Paul Butterfield.
This company is a joke They have taken so many ads in Amazon and eBay that when you do a search for harmonica or even type in marine band etc You will get flooded with eastflop ads Newcomers looking for a budget harp should get a special 20 or a marine band classic by honher The company promoted in this video is trying to undercut tried and tested classic harmonicas with these cheap things I would be rich if I had a dollar for people telling me how easy these great And the company has 400 plus staff in a warehouse in china and it’s clear they are not paid respectfully These are throwaway harps I tried one, it doesn’t come close to decent honher harps
@@mindscaper1898 take it easy there big bud! I like hohner, I just can’t afford them. And to be honest, I don’t care what they pay their workers and I don’t care that they buy ads. To me it comes down to getting a cheap instrument that works. My life is miserable enough, I don’t have time to worry about the Chinese factories man, I straight up do not care at all. If it works and it’s cheap, I’ll buy it. The way you’re talking sounds like you’ve had a lot of privilege in your life. For most people, 50$ for a marine band is a lot of money. If I had the money, I would gladly only play hohner. But I’m broke, so I’ll take what I can get and I really don’t care what anyone has to say about it. These Chinese easstopz are miles better than cheap harps used to be a few years ago
@@formansbasement2311 so you don’t care about slavery Ok……. Sorry, thought I was talking to a human
I`ve got a 1957 supro amp that I want to use for harp. i also have some ancient shure mics. I wonder how an Astatic D 104 would sound.?
Those old Supro amps are smokers! I've got a couple Silvertone amps I use to play the Blues on harp, though my speaker cabinets are about shot to shit. I picked up a Fender Champ 50 XL modeling amp and I get some amazing sounds from that puppy!
I believe you get special files to tune reeds
@@calescapee9642 I bought one but it didn’t work as well or easily as the engraver
This is badass man. How did i just see this
@@kinglt1689 thanks man! I used to go to a lot of jams when I lived in San Diego. I should’ve recorded more of them
I made peace with my F harp because Thunder Road is probably in my top 20 for all-time favorite songs. But I practically had to develop an appreciation for tin whistles to get into it, and when I finally got a F# I insisted on low tuning and went with Lee Oskar. The low harmonicas have a more pleasant 3-octave range, but the higher harps take almost no effort to bend notes.
Surprisingly easy to play, very robust instrument. Problem is quality control. Mine has one key that doesn't work at all. Open it up and the welds are everywhere. Many reviews have said the same. So, it's a gamble purchase.
Use a small arkansas shaving stone instead of rotary tool

@@formansbasement2311 Thank you so much! The video was very interesting, btw.
I use Rocket and Rocket Amp’s. I own a few Seydel session steal’s but I find the cover plates are too fat and I don’t get a tight seal with my lips.
Thank you for the shout out brother! I'm glad you're enjoying the easttop as much as I am!
5:15 They're electroplated brass reed plates(standard on all their tin sandwich harps). If you keep looking, you'll see both "brass" and "electroplated brass". They're both technically correct, because electroplating doesn't mean it's not brass). They are definitely NOT steel, because they use self tapping screws to secure the reedplates(brass is soft enough for self-tapping screws, steel is not). If you buy enough T008s, you'll come across reed plates with loose screws because someone at the factory overtightened a reed plate screw and stripped the bottom/draw plate out. You see this on reeds too. Some say brass, which is incorrect. Easttop AFAIK doesn't make any brass reeds. Somebody just put brass into a text field incorrectly when making the listing. They're always phosphor bronze from the cheapo t003s I have all the way up to the pro level stuff(I have a few pro 20s) 12:52 They spot weld reeds on some models. They use rotary engravers and files on the reeds, if you're thinking of the harmonica mastery factory walkthrough, at three minutes in they show a woman using a file and rotary engraver. Every Easttop I have(from t003 to the pro 20) has distinct rotary engraver markings on it. It's a tiny spinning ball with diamond coated surfaces and leaves a little round mark elongated along the reed.
Been looking at one of these to replace my old 1997 vintage Hohner Pro Harp MS, feels too unethically cheap to buy in my honest opinion. makes me wonder what they dont pay their workers for.
Apology in advance...I enjoy all of your vids, man, but not all the melody notes here are correct. Great voice!
I like the Easttop but I do have an on and off issue with random reeds sticking on me for some reason. At least my C one anyways. I just bought an A one so we’ll see how that does. I bought an Amazing 20 in C just to compare. I guess I’ll find out. But I like having some budget harps and love the feel and sound of the Easttop. I think it’s definitely a lot of bang for $25.
16:56 that’s me…😂
