    That's similar to the way that I do it Scott. Sometime I'll skip on or two segments and then go back and fill it in. I'm like you, if the pieces don't line up exactly with proper overlap, I've failed!

    When you put the pieces on the outer ring do you go back and put a face clamp or something that puts more pressure on the segments to make sure you get a good bond on the ring? I like quick and thick and have not done any like this and was wondering. Looks awesome man.

    Great looking box! Couple questions. Which plane did you use to shape the lid, and what kind of bit was in your router table when you flush trimmed the bottom of the box? It looked like a spiral uncut bit, and if so, where did you buy it?

    I see a lot of these Laguna lathes on the segmented turning videos and have to admit they are very nice with the variable speed especially. But there is one thing most people seem to think is the "hard" part and that is truing the rings. Myself, I use a really old (1950s) Blount patternmakers' lathe which has a compound table like a metal lathe, which makes flattening rings a snap. I really do wish I had more turning capacity than the 12" I have, and the variable speed but at my age I am not going to invest in more equipment. I also am very grateful for the development of the new methods for making the wedges, which is so much easier than when I started trying to make segmented turnings back in the 1980s. It actually kind of amazes me that I haven't seen anyone doing this kind of work with a patternmakers' lathe though. Here is a link to a post of images of my lathe vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/detail.aspx?id=2291 but you may need to join the group to see the post.

    • @ScottMuellerWoodworks
      @ScottMuellerWoodworks Год назад

      Sorry for such a delayed response! You can calculate the necessary angle by dividing 360 by the number of segments. In this case, I had 16 segments, so 360/16 = 22.5 degrees. I built a sled that easily reproduces this exact angle.
