I was SHOCKED how DISGUSTING this Lake had Become. Stay Away!
We are experiencing some rather warm temps over the next few weeks at the end of summer and into early fall here in south-western Ontario. I set out hoping to have an enjoyable and fun evening on the water at my local lake/reservoir, only to find out that the water was overrun with giant algae plumes and slicks. It was disgusting!
I've been paddling this lake for several years now and have never seen the water this bad. Yes, there have been areas where algae would congregate, but nothing like this. I don't know if it has anything to do with the warm temperatures we are having, in combination with the lower water levels? Although the reservoir begins to drain down in September, I found it u...

Wow, where does the time go, and where the hell have I been? It took me until Canada Day (July 1) 2024 to get out into my kayak. The spring weather in our area of Ontario just sucked this year, in my opinion. Lots of rain, cold temps and less than ideal paddling weather haunted me on my days off. If you want to know if it's going to rain, just ask me when my next day off is! Today, I'm out in m...
I Follow My "Spirit" Duck Up The Thames River to Explore Areas I've Never Reached Before!

On this adventure, I am getting lost on the Upper Thames River just out on the west side of Woodstock, Ontario. Not only do I encounter a number of large Blue Herons and Canada Geese, but I am lead on this trek through the winding river by my new found spirit guide, err...spirit duck. I've never had a duck lead me up a river, almost telling me to follow him. Even when I went in the wrong direct...

Tonight I take to my local paddling spot on this Summer Solstice. This is the longest daylight of the year and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to get the kayak out for a late evening paddle. With the summer season here, it's time to begin new adventures! I love summer, but I tend to get what I call my seasonal "summer anxiety". In Canada, we only have a limited window of time to get out t...
Unusual Discoveries: What Happens When a Reservoir Drains? I Can't Believe I Did This!
Просмотров 107Год назад
Have you ever wondered what's at the bottom of a lake? Every autumn, our local reservoir drains down before the winter freeze approaches. This draining allows for greater capacity in the lake as the anticipation of rain in the fall, and melting snow runoff in the spring approaches. On this rather unseasonably warm day in November 2022, I head out past the deep muddy banks and into Pittock Lake ...

All I can say is WOW! Although it was a cool, rainy, overcast day in March, this end-of-winter paddle through Florida's Shingle Creek was spectacular. This was my first time kayaking in the winter, in Florida, and first time paddling through a forest,... a Cypress forest nonetheless. (Video Note: Unfortunately my GoPro failed to record a good portion of this trip and I had to edit part of the b...

It's a warm mid-August Saturday in 2022 when I decided to take a drive due south to Deer Creek Conservation Area located between Langton and Long Point, Ontario. Now I was here when I was a kid, maybe 12 or so years old, which was around 36 years ago at the time of recording this video. That's a long time and my recollection of this area was pretty fuzzy at best. I've read several different com...
I Went on A Summer's Eve Paddle and Wasn't Disappointed! The Lake was Alive with Nature!

I find going for a paddle in the summer evening hours provides for better nature viewing than during the hot and humid afternoons. Tonight was no exception. It was a warm night with some fluffy clouds hanging overhead and a bright sun beginning to set behind them. A New Season & New Ramblings - April 2021
My 2 largest bass were caught in shingle creek, twelve years apart.
With my luck I'd snag a gator and it wouldn't end well for me.
Hey Jay I could explain why reservoir’s look like that but it would take too long lol Those comorants and geese don’t help and farmers fertilizer that they have been spraying plus no rain for quite awhile Time to come back up north again to cleaner waterways 😀👍
It's sad to see the lake, and any waterways for that matter, look like this. I will be up again for a visit! Wish I could have made it there this summer. Missing the clear waters of Georgian Bay!
Yuk
You guys are terrible fisherman !!
I've been called a lot of things, but "fisherman" was definitely never one of them.
This could be a video editing video about how choosing the wrong music can ruin a video.
You aren't the first one to comment on the music in this video. I'll have to take a look at it again and see if I can change it up. Thanks for the constructive criticism!
@@getlostwithjay it's really a beautiful video. Just has the wrong music. Doesn't fit the calming beauty of the setting.
that beaver dam is no longer there there are only two rather short and easy portages now to get into smokey lake
Thanks for the update! I hope to get back there very soon to check it out. Happy paddling!
Get to work on the Dollars lake video. Andrea and I wanna see it. It was a good trip, was good for both of us!
It will be a short one, but I can piece something together.
Hi Jay. Thanks for the shout out. I am glad you're back doing videos. Love your content. Keep'n it real. I'm away on trip a lot the next few weeks but let's plan a fall outing. It would be awesome to paddle with you.
Funny part...I am just editing my canoe trip to Lac Kipawa and I DO have a sun burst in it. LOL
@@TheHappyCamper Oh poor Kevin, you don't know what your infor. I am the long suffering Brent. Jason says he still needs me to carry the canoe so I am happy Ha!
Hey Kevin! Wow, that was quick! Let's definitely cook up something for the fall. You can contact me through the email I use for RUclips... getlostwithjay@gmail.com and we can go from there. Have a great trip! Now I just have to look to see where I left my speedo.

Lots of water snakes hanging from the trees over the water when we went ,,, we didn't bother with them
I don't blame you. I'm not very keen on making friends with water snakes either.
There’s a museum where those planes you hear are kept and I think you could get a tour I’m not sure
Unfortunately, it looks like the Kissimmee Air Museum was closed in 2021. They must still house them and fly out of the local Kissimmee airport. It's great that they have been preserved and still flying.
any time someone says "hidden gem" the place gets ruined and overrun!
It’s Kissimmee. It’s already overcrowded here. Shingle creek is on the side of a interstate, most people go to walk the park or kayak.
I hear ya'. Shingle Creek is already a well known paddling spot for locals but I think the guides and Shingle Creek park staff do a great job of keeping this waterway a real gem. Florida is blessed with an abundance of water to paddle.
When's the canoe comming?
Sometime in May! 😃
@@getlostwithjay Have to drive to Toronto to pick it up?
What year did you film this?
That was summer of 2022.
@@getlostwithjay I found that place not long ago someone has torn down the lower walls for some reason
I was back there around August to do another video (forthcoming) and it looked liked no one had been there in a while, overgrown around the banks, and like you said, the walls were down. Someone spent a lot of time building that structure. I didn't attempt to climb on top of it though.
Stupid noisy music doesn'y fit
The music is distracting
Paddle on!
Just a head's up to anyone planning this, my wife and I did this portage from Big Gull to Shoepack on July 9 2023. There was a section about 100 metres long blocked by a swath of fallen trees. I cut away the smaller stuff for an hour and we managed to get the canoe through, but even after all that cutting, it was a real challenge. Hopefully, the park people clear it, otherwise, it is passable but needs 2 people to pass the canoe over and under piles of trees. The start from Big Gull had no portage sign, but it had some flagging tape and starts with a steep uphill.
Thanks for the update! Nothing like a blocked portage to get the blood pumping :)
That looks amazing; thanks for the video. I was wondering if it is safe to paddle board in there?
Yes it is! Paddle boards can be rented out right at the Paddle Center. I recommend taking one of the tours they provide. Check them out at www.paddlingcenter.com/ for more info. Thanks for watching!
such a slay of a video if I do say so myself
Im in canada i agree happy canada day
Coleman canoes are almost indestructible! Road portages are the best 😂
Can you get around pittock damn with the kayak?
I've never done it. The short answer is not really. However, I think the safest way would be to take out at the Roth Park launch on the south shore (east side of dam), then up the walking/biking trails to the west side of the dam. It would be a lengthy portage, though. There is a parking lot at the dam, so you could load your canoe or kayak at Roth Park and then drive it over to the dam. The west side has plenty of sandy areas where you could launch from. Just be careful of all the aspiring shore "fishermen." 🤣
Ha yes I've seen them! Thanks for the answer!
I subscribe your RUclips channel
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Cormorant crap kills the trees they roost in!
They populate these trees every summer at the east end of the lake. There are a lot of them too.
I would have told him if it wasnt for those planes he wouldnt be hanging out on his plastic boat lol
I hear ya. I think he was more kidding about the noise of the planes when paddling through a serene cypress forest. I love seeing and hearing those old planes still flying. I live in the area of the Canadian Harvard Association that restores and flies old Harvard trainers. The sound of these aircraft is unmistakable. Check this out if you like that sort of thing... ruclips.net/video/7UtzQFGSdVI/видео.html Thanks for watching!
An probably speaking GERMAN OR JAPANESE, and doing what he is told.
Looks like fun. I was down in that area in February with the family. I didn't have time to try anything on the water but this looks like an interesting tour. Glad a gator didn't get you!
Hey Dave! It was a fun tour and a good break from the busy amusement parks. The fear of gators kept my wife and kids in the hotel this time. I was quite happy to have a knowledgeable tour guide that explained where the gators hung out and that they pretty much keep to themselves unless you are harassing them or getting in their space. We only saw the baby gator on this day. We were told momma gator was "shy" of people and was below us, keeping warm in the river bottom.
That is an interesting place to go for a paddle!
It was a fun paddle. I'd love to do more like that in Florida. So many waterways to explore.
First visit this year today with my boy. Lots of fish:) Deer creek is my favorite place on earth Our family is often the only family swimming! Often times we are completely alone there. Blessed to live 5 minutes away:).
Glad to hear you enjoyed it, we had great weather this weekend! Deer Creek is definitely a nice paddling spot for families. Unfortunately, when I went it was so chaotic and loud at the boat launch that I think it must have left a bad taste. The lake itself is excellent to paddle. Thanks for watching!
You see this.. this would make a great TikTok.
Love ur hat
Thanks for sharing the video. Planning a Crotch Lake trip this summer, and found your loop video series while hunting down info about the lake and the area. Very much enjoyed travelling along with you via the videos. Was there much power boat traffic on Crotch while you were there? I'll be going midweek and I know there's at least one active resort and a launch at the south end so I'm curious about how busy the lake actually was. Cheers!
Hey Don! We only saw a handful of motor boats out when we were there. This was a week or two before May 2-4 weekend so it likely wasn't as busy yet. We stayed one night on Big Island on Crotch Lake and there wasn't any cottages in this area. Had a couple boats pull up in the bay beside us at night to fish but they were fairly quiet and left early before it got too dark. The next morning when we left towards Big Gull, we didn't see any motor boats in our travels. I definitely recommend paddling these lakes. Have a great time!
@@getlostwithjay Cool, thanks for the intel. Almost paddling season again ... all the best for a great summer.
But are there a lot of trout in that lake ? That's the big question for me.
Check out their website. It looks like there could be some trout in that pond. ontarioconservationareas.ca/conservation-areas/deer-creek/
@@getlostwithjay thanks hope your doing well
Love it❤
I realize Deer Creek has plenty of paddlers that love this conservation area. However, on this day it just wasn't doing it for me. Maybe it was the confusion, dis-organization and chaos at the boat launch upon my arrival. It left a bad first impression. The peace and quiet found in the back areas of the lake was more of what I was looking for. Although, I was surprised that there was virtually no wildlife present. I do suggest visiting Deer Creek at least once to check out the scenery and the quiet areas...but don't go on a busy weekend.
The cormorants will eventually kill that tree with thier shit!
Just paddled kayaks down from Road 60 the other day. There are a few log jams, but all have channels cut through. A totally delightful paddle!! Recommend a 10-12 ft kayak, nothing longer, definitely no canoe.
Ayden's first back country trip was 2 nights in HHWT near Dorset, on the lake with no fish. He missed one year since and now we do 3 nights every time.
Nice work Jay. Love to see the kids getting into camping. Thanks for sharing the video.
Good day!. Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you could tell me what day this videos was shot? My wife and I just finished this trip and encountered a huge amount of blow down on the trail.
Hi Bond! Our 4 day trip was May 13-16. The only horrible amount of blowdown was on our 2nd day at Side Dam Rapids. I didn't record that portage on our day 2 video because it was such a pain to get around and our safety came first. I had heard that they had a bad wind storm go through that area a week or two later which had contributed to some severe blowdowns which may be what you encountered. I hope you otherwise had a enjoyable time on your trip. Thanks for watching too!
Did you get through on this back in summer 2022? It was only passable with a lot of cutting in July 2023. I could not find a viable way around either
Good job, still only just got it right while reading the sign HA HAA HAAAA!
Not an easy name to correctly remember.
Thanks for the video. This area is one of my favourite spots. I didn't know you could portage from Crotch Lake to Big Gull Lake. How was the portaging?
Hey Dave. Yes, you there are a few portages along Gull Creek into Coxvale and Big Gull. It might be a bit tricky to find the route to Gull Creek with all the inlets and bays along the west end of Crotch Lake, but luckily my paddle partner Brent is a good navigator. The portages themselves are fairly easy, short and straightforward. The portages on day 2 weren't great, but these were fine. Our mapped route is in the description along with links to the Frontenac North Park Lands which also has the route & portage info.
Blue Heron chick just hatched perhaps, less exciting than an Iguanadon but still interesting.
Videos like this one are so fun to make and share when the unexpected things happen. I didn't expect the high winds out on the lake, didn't know there was a shelter built on my "stealth" site, and had no idea how to set up this particular hammock. 😳 This is what makes outdoor adventures fun...the unexpected! I hope you all enjoy watching and let me know what you'd like to see here, locations, etc. Much appreciated! As always, get out there,...and get lost!
Has anyone done this trip recently? I did it years ago and lots of down trees. Spent a lot of time put of the canoe trying to get around trees etc. Is it a nicer paddle now?
Doesn't seem like such a hard day in a 25 minute video.
Day 2 on the Mississippi did not go entirely as planned. A few portages with one that drove us nuts due to the fallen trees blocking the trail along the shoreline. High winds and waves made for a thrilling ride through Crotch Lake to our campsite. The mosquitoes were just hatching over the lake that night by the thousands, driving me into my tent and making for an early bed time. Enjoy the video, more to come!
More videos of this trip are on the way!
