    Had a good laugh at you thinking cards wouldn't be harder than ttgs. Modern design philosophy usually ensures you know which principles are going to be important, like, within the first hour, no matter what game you're playing; cards will keep even the faintest outline of what optimal play looks like hidden from you for years.

    • @beaver_warrior
      @beaver_warrior Месяц назад

      Modern games are intentionally designed so the rules encourage certain strategies/playstyles. Older games are designed with simple rules that give rise to emergent properties and strategies. Modern games are designed to have most of the player skill progression achieved within the first dozen plays because that’s as long as the average gamer will play it before moving on to the next hot game. Classic games will continue to be rewarding for years and it’s the reason they’re played to this day. If chess was designed today you would gain victory points for capturing pieces or forming pawn chains or controlling the center, and have other fundamental strategies given as objectives to be completed.

I lived with Stu Horn, one of the noted practitioners, and it was amazing how art would just arrive every single day, and we would take the responses down to the box. It was a vibrant conversation, worth remembering and revisiting... and reviving.

    "I have a different way of working" .. when the map in ARCS completely changed, and the gameplay is NOT the same as originally shown, don't backers get disappointed? His "best version" of it might not be what the backers wanted. I dislike his way of working, and his games should be bought only after they are done.

    • @EricKuha
      @EricKuha 8 месяцев назад

      I think the final product of Arcs is exactly what was originally described. The only thing that's different is that the map looks different. But functionally, it's basically identical to the original pitch. Have you even played it yet?

      You do know that Cole is one of the most successful board game designers… right? His games are all extremely successful. His Kickstarters earn massive amounts of money because people believe in his vision as a creative. I think a thing that not everyone understands about creatives/artists of all kinds is that we don’t always know what a finished product is going to look like. Ideas evolve. Plus, KS adds a layer of “if we raise more we can do more” which allows for someone like Cole to create the best gaming experience possible. Does that mean sometimes visual designs change throughout the process? Definitely! Because they may have realized something that works BETTER and can give it to you without asking you to buy the game again 3 years from now when it needs to be redesigned or updated because it didn’t work exactly as planned. The thing about KS is that you don’t have to back a game if you don’t like a designer’s process. I also think a lot of people forget that crowdfunding comes with an element of risk. Maybe the game takes 5 years to complete instead of 2. Maybe the components need to be replaced because there was a pandemic and supply chain logistics have thrown a wrench in the game. I myself, tend to only buy crowdfunded games once they are in the fulfillment stage because that’s what works best for me.

    • @okkiebok
      @okkiebok 6 месяцев назад

      If any of their kickstarters looked like the initial version when they shipped I'd be intensely disappointed. They clearly communicate that the game is in active development and that some of it will change.

    • @Exozik
      @Exozik 28 дней назад

      @@biffybeansNot because a designer is successful or trendy means that his approach on everything cannot be criticized. I think the person having expection based on what he saw early on during the campaign and what he received been different disapointed him is fair. He have all the rights to feel this way just like someone been excited that the changes happened too. Kickstarter canpaigns are used in so many different ways that it is hard to know what to expected from it. Some campaign start very early in the creation spaces while some others are pretty much finished and the campaign is more about getting public attention than anything else. Most campaign are in between these points but knowing exactly what to expect is something quite hard to do. Also, some people are new to crowdfunding and it can be hard to realize how all of this work since most campaign are focused on what will sell more copies rather than transparency on the process.
