The Gentleman Farmer
Канада
Добавлен 2 сен 2013
Kirk Fell Farm is a 143ac permaculture farm in Northern Alberta, Canada. The farm is owned by the Metcalfe family, who started their unconventional homesteading journey in 2017.
The farm is named after Kirk Fell, a prominent mountain in the Pennine range that overlooks Stan’s childhood home in the UK Lake District. The purpose of this RUclips channel is to help educate others about applying permaculture principles to common agricultural and horticultural practices, to improve the foods we eat, and inspire people to reduce their carbon footprint by growing their own food.

I’m not looking forward to that weather. I think we are about a month behind you, and the only equipment we have with a cab and heater is the skid, but it sucks to plow with until I find or build grousers.
At least you don't have son to blame for the lost items and then realize you put it there! Whoops! You have a place for everything and everything is in that place. It makes the day go so much better. We got the shrink from the local grocery store, That is what they call expired inventory here, and it was a job, cooking this, composting that, feeding a bit of this now. I was so glad when we went there on our pick up day and they told us they were giving it to the Salvation Army food bank now. I was starting to worry about pesticide and herbicide load from these vegies we were feeding the chickens. I can't get broccoli and lettuce to stay fresh that long. So I am glad we don't get it all the time. When ever I am in the store I ask, sometimes they have some and sometimes not, perfect. At least most of it is staying out of the dumpster!
You’re a trooper. Lol. Plowing snow without a cab. Been almost 20 years since I’ve done that. Can’t say I miss it. Heat in a cab is way nicer.
A bit bizarre that old girl still starts without that tuneup kit
Nice day today. No north wind. Walked the cows up the road to their winter feeding grounds. Make some room around here for the 65 bred cows we bought. Getting cramped here with the culls, heifer calves and main herd of breds. Got a few hundred bushels of peas/oats rolled for the goats and calves too. With weaning, preg testing out of the way and cows bought, things will slow down around here again.
Lol! Where did I put that top link? It gets more fun when you start asking yourself "why am I standing here and what was I doing!"
Oh I did that today. Six things going wrong at once and I’m staring into my shop not knowing what I’m even looking for.
We had a foot of snow one fall early, but they were on good clover/fescue. They’d paw open big areas, wouldn’t even come up for hay. Had nanny goats mixed with them 400 ewes, they’d kick the ewes aside and eat what they’d pawed open. Got a couple weeks extra graze that fall. They were very fat going into breeding. Didn’t even grain them.
There’s no grass under that snow. Just a burnt crust where there used to be grass. Maybe next year will be better.
Might have only had 6 inches so far of snow. Haven’t even had to plow snow yet, cattle truck even made it in and out easily yesterday.
Today was my fourth time plowing in as many days. Got my old Chevy stuck today where I plowed two days ago.
Burr! I would rather keep my hat on, than hanging out in a chicken poop, I mean coop!
Might need an umbrella 🤣
Better open a door up. Lol. Looks smoky
The ol Perkins was chugging like a diesel
Getting greedy with the snow there. We only have maybe 3 inches or so.
It would seem that way. I couldn’t buy a drop of rain this summer, so I’d better not complain.
A snow fence properly placed will often blow your driveway clear. Did she offer to put the kettle on for you?
Oh no, by the time I’m done chores in the evening, everyone is usually in bed.
Good morning Stan ☕️☕️☕️👍
Good Morning Chad!
@ north wind is still blowing here.
Yoda on shoveling snow. Mountain water. You should consider area farm water management. I guess after you said No, the light didn't get re-pointed? :)
Once it melts it will sit properly. Tie a rope from a roof rafter and to the handle? Use glass instead of plastic (no fuel for a unregulated electrical arc) Jacket tea cozy is a great idea. Sonne Farms (S. Dakota, howling blizzards) just installed unheated, air-barrier insulated, water-ers that just need a wind break to stay free and clear.
They were actually good about it and moved it right away.
Too rough outside in that wind today. More of a shop day besides doing chores.
Ya that was awful. I wanted a few more days in a light jacket without the woolly hat.
Barn looks great!
My dog started messing with the neighbours chickens when I was a kid, we had to put him down. I think got the taste for it while we were away for a whole day and he killed two of my goose. Lore is, they never unlearn the bad behaviour because it's soft-wired into their behaviour. I was 15 so I could handle the truth - might have to come up with a Santa story for the little ones :/ .
Good idea with the tire. Perhaps a wind wall for all the usual directions - at the extent of that radius?
ear chew - that sounds like a rat
Caught him in the act. On a separate note, there are no rats in Alberta.
I’m going to set it up on the leeward side of the house so that he’s out of the elements, and can still get under the covered deck.
We’ve had a couple dogs that unfortunately “went to the lake” and never came back. Sometimes sadly they just can’t seem to break the habit. The temptation and taste is too much for them. We put a lot of effort into imprinting them with the other animals while they are pups, but it’s not always successful.
Winter coming??? Fvcking feels like it’s here already. 🤣. That north wind the past two days has been something special. ❄️❄️🥶
Whole raw is the way to go.. gotta get yourself a milk cow 😂
If we were a single income household, we’d definitely have a milk cow. I gotta get this RUclips thing to start making bill payments.
That metal clamp part gives way real easy too (ask me how I know 😂)
Oh they sure do. We’ve had a few pull apart.
Had chicken 4 nights in a row this week. Wife must of been mad at me. 🤷♂️🤣👍🍻. Got roast beef last night, so life is good again.
You must be out of the doghouse 🤣🤣🤣
You will appreciate good lighting in lambing season, that being said bright lighting is good all the time. Sunny days🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
I just have one string down the center of my new machine shed, 54x100’ long. Lights up pretty good. I used zip ties to tie them to the rafters. Let there be light. 🤣🤣👍🥃🥃🥃
Thanks for the hot tip. It worked out great!
You take a hanging fixture put it within 6 in of your water can and put a 40 W bulb in there would be good to go.
I’ve never had luck with that method once it gets really cold.
With those infrared thermometers you can't measure shiny surfaces but what you can do is take a piece of tape or a marker or something on the shiny it part and take the temperature reading off of that.
I think you’re right.
Good job Dad
The loft is coming along nicely there. We bought some strings of LED lights to run through the new machine shed and cow barn. Have a string running in the old sheep barn as well.
Do you find it lights it up well, or just makes it less dark?
@ lights up really well
there's building code on the gap - should go with that
we had a loft when I was a kid - good memories
That’s what I did. 7.25” rise. The run is much shorter, but it’s easy for the kids to navigate.
Us too, but ours was always full of hay. If the kids don’t use it, I’ll put the snowmobile up there.
@@KirkFellFarm Oh! I was talking about the railings; stairs look great! :)
Good evening Stan 🥃🍺🥃🍺👍🍻
Good evening Chad!
A screw identifies as a nail. Can you actually say that these days! LOL As for the dogs, run a hot poly wire where the can get shocked and from then on you don't even need to electrify it. Especially when they can't jump over it because of your other fence
Dang good looking cookie. I’d eat one of those. Good catch on those nuts before that tire works its way off in road gear.
A fella would have to wait a long time to have another day as bad as the day the wheel fell off the tractor.
What's to keep the dogs from going thru the big hole above the board??
Probably nothing, but they typically go through at ground level and don’t like climbing over and through at the same time. I’ll keep an eye on them and see what they do.
Just for fun, put a wildlife camera on the dog crossing; gives you data & video content! :)
Your 1 x 6 was done 'waddle and daub' style - the Neolithic building technology - can you use sticks from the creek valley along the bottom rows? Collect a 'faggot'* or two so have some on hand. (* ancient old English word for a bundle of sticks)
they will swing rope across to the hay. ;)
Your heat gun might be right if the warming plate is in Faierenheit? That’s just my opinion
Hey Stan, we use a heated dog bowl for the chickens and it works great. Now, here in Colorado we don’t get to -40° all that often, but the bowl works great down to -15°F for days on end. Give us a link to your podcast with Robin. We would love the check it out.
Yes we’ve tried the heated dog bowls, but had limited success. Oftentimes they would still freeze over in colder temps, and they don’t quite hold enough water for the day.
Good morning Stan ☕️☕️☕️👍
Good morning Chad.
I have thought long about keeping chicken water unthawed on the cheap and safe. I use a light bulb inside a cinder block with a steel plate on the top and bottom for fire safety and place the waterer on top. It is right along the same idea as your amazon' choice water base heater, but I think you should put the heater on a steel plate on top of your rim and you should be golden. My wife adds, put a cozy over the water container also. Make sure you write a review after you have used it for a year. Hopefully it is still working. CINEZ junk, these days and its not cheap. Thanks for the upload. One other thought is, could you not make a tray like that with heat trace?
Good evening Stan 🥃🥃🥃👍🍻
Good evening!
hahahahahah that is a good one stan...
Congrats to your daughter on her award. The chickens will love you, the dogs might chew on one of your legs this week. Lol. I really enjoy your commentary. Keep it up
Good job, Dad!
You’re gonna need a porker around there to help eat some of that produce and other stuff.
So far it’s working out that the chickens are eating most of it, and then they still eat some grain. They didn’t like the gluten free waffles. 🤣
I should send you a picture of our hay feeders we use. They are selling them just outside of grimshaw now.
They had a couple at the last Richie Bros sale, but I was busy at work and missed out.
Good evening Stan 🍻👍🥃🥃🥃
Yes, it would be interesting to see the soil conditions after molasses’s. If it is conducive to enhancing the soil, I would try it on my lawn, however, not writing my name. Lol
KFC = bad life choices. 🤣🤣🤣
Sure is. But sometimes a guy has a void that can only be filled with the worst of decisions. Thankfully fried chicken is about the worst thing for me.
very clean floor
