Hey @Thesupermachine2000 the U.S. signal is actually fairly simple. Typically, I would only see like 5-6 of those simple signals. But overall they are super simple to understand.

@@larryjanson4011 howdy Larry, unfortunately you can not buy those from off store shelves or any shelves for that matter. I earned these cards due to me being a UP Conductor and with all of my other conductor training I could get all the fancy books and what not.

Hey @johnbrogan6583 unfortunately, to only get these cards. You have to apply for the train crew position and then they will provide these cards.

@@WIPEOUT_Trains In the Netherlands only one signal, sometimes with a number signal for a different speed than the standard track speed. For example: after a station the train can go 2 directions. One direction max speed 120 Km/h, the diversion route 80 Km/h. If the train goes strait, only green signals. If the train goes the other route, first a orange signal with number signal shows 8, indicating reduce speed to 80 Km/h, followed by a green blinking light with a number signal showing a 8 indicating passing allowed with a max speed of 80 Km/h. After that a green signal indication that the train can go to the max track speed. The track speed is given by a sign.

@@kaasmeester5903 From what i read, a main signal acts as a distance signal too. But on some places there is a separate distance signal which can only show green and orange. I am not an expert, so it is possible that i am wrong about some information. There is a site which goes over railways and contains detailed info over rules and signals too (pdf file).

Hey @j-bird1778 so the “diverging” signals are basically to tell us that we are going from 1 line of track to another and we have ti correspond with the speed limit of that crossing. It’s just something that we have been taught. Also proceed and prescribed speed is something that we are given in our time table that is our speed limit for any length of track that we run on.

The NORAC and later modified Conrail/ NORAC signals, were speed signals. Approach Limited would be to approach the next signal at Limited Speed. The Limited Clear would indicate Limited Speed through the turnouts until the last car clears and then Normal Speed. There is a caveat for Cab Signals. The NORAC signals have a much shorter and succinct definition. NS signals aren't speed signals and the definitions are similar to the UP signals. I rarely had to run on the NS signals, since I was prior right Conrail and could hold the assignments on the ex-Conrail lines. Retired now for over a year and don't miss it, really.
