How I Approach a New Set in Teamfight Tactics | TFT Guide
I've noticed that some of my friends are often discouraged by TFT essentially hitting a reset button every few months, so I wanted to share how I personally handle learning new sets in the hopes that it helps someone make the leap.

How I Won My First DDR Tournament

I played in a DDR beginner bracket at my school and did a little gameing. I started practicing DDR about 2 weeks ago on a soft pad when I heard about this event. Before then, I had next to no DDR experience, but was able to clear a few 9s on Pump. About 20 minutes before it was run, they decided to split into beginner and advanced divisions, but I still thought I was going to get destroyed. It ...

Thanks for creating this
thank you for watching!
Awesome vid! I think it could benefit from some very slight background music throughout it. Not as loud as the intro background music tho lol Also adding little sound effects goes a long way for making the edits feel higher quality. Like a pop sound when an image pops up on screen or a whoosh sound when you're changing scenes. Keep it up!
o yea thanks for the advice! ngl i know like almost nothing about audio and ihni how to actually balance stuff lmao
I appreciate the in depth guide. You are right about, every video just assuming you already know the basics. This was amazing. Thank you!
🥺 thank you
I gotta say, there's a lotta guides out there on RUclips but the google slides version is possibly the greatest thing I have found when it comes to learning this near-inaccessible to new players game. Thank you so much.
Wow thanks! I will say some parts of the guide including the google slides are a bit outdated due to updates and system changes (such as bag sizes). Most of the conceptual stuff should still hold tho.
I just downloaded TFT because I heard they added my wife to the game. Perfect video to get up and playing. Unfortunately, I'm gonna be losing because I have to ignore all of this advice and just try to go for Mel comp every game. The things we do for love... Fyzzl the GOAT.
ayoooo cb!! fortunately for you, mel should be able to fit well into almost any board, the hard part is gonna be finding her. have fun with tft man feel free to hmu whenever as well
Ok so this is how you initially learn the traitweb. Do you also have a strategy on how to learn the meta or improve fundamentals once you are already pretty good?
My process for learning the meta generally involves looking at stats, patch notes, and watching streams. Aside from that, it's mostly a matter of putting in the reps to feel comfortable on a given meta line. Sometimes things just don't click for me tho, and depending on how I'm feeling I'll either keep forcing it until I figure it out or just give up. If I can find a guide on it, then I might watch some content to see what I'm doing wrong. Sometimes you'll see videos like "Top 5 comps to play on patch 14.23b" or whatever and if its from a player I recognize I'll usually watch it. Twitter is also actually a decent place for finding stuff about the meta or random tech but I stopped using Twitter a while ago, up to you if its worth using that shit website for that. I think once you get used to the process though, most metas will start to click after a day or two but some are also simpler than others. As for improving fundamentals, I watched a lot of analysis content on youtube and slowly picked up more and more stuff as I watched. My favorite channels for analytical content are Kai and Learning TFT. Admittedly, I didn't watch much in Set 12 cuz I was kinda getting tired of how bad the patches were (also Kai didn't upload lol). Watching streams also helped but you'll probably see bigger improvements in doing vod review, either your own or challenger vods. I'm just really bad at vod review tbh so I don't really do it but I think vod review is kinda op for improving so I should probably just force myself but oh well. As you pick up fundamentals, you'll start to create a lot of rules which is good but it's also important to understand the reasons for the rules and the limits of them. For example a lot of people starting out have a big realization of how important early game gold is but then they might take it too far and refuse to go below 50 gold even on one life. A bit of an extreme example but I've also seen people like that (not flaming them btw, everyone has to learn somehow).
sorry for wall of text lmao
@@fyzzl670 Thanks! This might also make for an interesting video. There is lots of content out there (Stats websites, streamers ect.), so it might be hard to get noticed when doing similar things. However I think nobody did a meta-analysis (in the sense of second level analysis) of how to learn with this stuff, so this could make for a unique video
@@abcdefgh5808 thanks for the suggestion!
Bro literally I was new to the game when u uploaded last video and im chall now. Greatest inconsistency in yt history (no flaming just thought it was crazy not uploading for 8 month and coming back as nothing happened)
sorry boss im ngl this might be the funniest shit ive ever read LMAO congrats on hitting challenger! youre better than me now lol hope my last vid helped you somehow unfortunately, i had/have other priorities and also wasn't enjoying tft as much for a while and kinda made this video on a whim. i have ideas on other videos but actually sitting down and making them is another question on top of juggling life stuff
tocker's trial is also a good place to check units, item changes, and to field test comps at different power levels.
oh yeah true I hadn't thought of that
wow

😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
Nice vid, hope this vid helps other newbies tho (like me). Also I had a couple of questions because of me being new to TFT, what's PBE? What's the difference between PBE and normal match? What would you recommend for a set that's for countering KogMaw carry (just like the last enemy you just fought on that vid)? Seen a lot of them recently And lastly.. Do you think playing a meta set/comp is based on what item I get at the start of the game? This is the story from the last ranked (the very bottom rank) match. I got a B.F sword and the bow item, then I proceeded to build some traits and I went with the *Twitch Experiment Comp* because at the start of the game I got the same item I got in the game. Long story short I got all of the champions but I don't have the perfect augments and item (I only got the same item for Twitch, then some random tank item that doesn't match on the web), but I managed to get 2nd place. This is the first time I got second place on ranked (I might be lucky because of the new Set) Also, why did I get a second you might ask? Because I lost to that damn KogMaw with a 2 golden border item and a purple sword with red border item, he only has 1 gold rarity trait and bronze on the rest. This is TFT I guess (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`)
Thanks for watching! PBE stand for Public Beta Environment and its how Riot tests stuff before they go live. This can include previews on balance patches, reworks, or entire new sets when applicable. I probably should have explained the acronym in the video, sorry about that. Something to counter Kog'Maw would either need an incredibly strong magic damage tank or some form of backline access. This can be a champion that dashes to the back or a long-ranged ability that has a chance to target backline enemies. Not every champion with one of these features will be a carry though; it still depends on balance. As an extreme example, a champion that can dash directly to Kog'Maw that doesn't actually do damage to Kog'Maw isn't going to counter Kog'Maw. In your specific case, it sounds like the Kog'Maw had 2 radiant items and a Wit's End which is probably one of the strongest artifacts for Kog'Maw. Realistically, you probably couldn't have beaten them without a 3 star 4 or 5 cost or some other equally perfect setup. Sometimes people just get luckier than you, and getting 2nd place in TFT is still a good chunk of LP. In general, you want to keep your options open at the start of the game but you can start to lean towards certain comps depending on the items you get. For example, if I start the game with a sword, bow, and glove, I'm generally going to favor playing an AD comp, but It's possible I will play AP instead a small percent of the time depending on what units I find naturally in stage 1 and early stage 2. Hope this video and comment can help you out on your ranked journey!
Oh another counter I forgot to mention btw would be stuns. Kog'Maw relies on casting to ramp up his attack speed and range so if you can stun him, it can prevent him from snowballing out of control too quickly and might buy you enough time to get through the frontline.
good guide i think i understand the game now
@@saafa7221 thank you!
Another banger vid as usual. Really like the point about picking one unit at the start to build your team around, definitely helps break down the learning process into more natural segments.
thx goat
Heyo So you still stream or play tft?
Hi! I do still play TFT but I have been taking a bit of a "soft break" (idrk what to call it lol). My enjoyment of Set 12 has been fluctuating a lot so I only play a few games each week to avoid hard-grinding a game I'm not having fun with. For that reason, it's been hard to stream and I also don't feel comfortable making more videos when I haven't really been playing, even if I have ideas for topics.
@@fyzzl670 All good. I feel you. But I'm emerald, I know I won't get diamond this season so I trying to learn fundamentals so I can push next season. Watching grandmaster is too much to really understand. So when you're back I will watch you :), but for now take what you need and just HF.
@@michaelchivers3080 congrats on hitting emerald and good luck on your journey to diamond!

nice video!
Thank you, very knowledgeable video.
hey, im a challanger player and after watching the video i must say this is very informative for a person that is in diamond. Great video
wow thank you! im sure this video was super helpful for a challenger player like you lmao
as a complete tft noob (i usually place 5-8, and have only played like 10 games) i think #2 is the most helpful since from lvl 3-4 i would usually level up even if i didnt even have 4 units, just because i only needed 4 exp to make it to lvl 4
cool to hear! hope you're having fun with the game :)
still no info on how to pick units
I didn't want to recommend specific units to pick because not only does that vary from set to set, but even patch to patch. At the end of the video, I recommend resources like tactics.tools and tfthandbook that have lists of comps that are updated each patch. Since this video's creation, there is now also tftacademy.com created by Frodan and Dishsoap. If you want to follow a less rigid gameplan you can identify the important carries and tanks of a comp and fill out the traits as you see fit based on what you hit.

Now that you mention it, I am also one of those people who has been running into tutorial ,guides, ticks and tips videos that is suitable for players who already know the basics. Thank you for this video.
thank you :)
Very well made video so kudos on that, I'm sure these tips will help a lot of people! I think I'd disagree with the last point depending on what you're rolling for. If the unit you're rolling for would be a big spike, then it's going to be worth buying it even if you lose out on some interest gold (especially if you're rolling down just to 50), so you might as well roll down to 50 rather than 54. If it's just a trait-bot or something really unimportant then I'd agree you don't need to roll all the way down to your threshold, but then at that point you have to ask why you're rolling at all lol.
appreciate the kind words! i definitely see your point, and i do agree that in cases where you get a big spike, rolling to 50 gold is probably better. thanks for watching btw :)

Those were some decent tips but some more you could of added, been playing double up with friends that just either are super new or just not really good and i see them do a lot of small mistakes that probably a lot of beginners do, some of them u talked about in this video like rolling early / chasing unnecessary 3stars. Some others ive seen is chasing BIS only, they usually look at some tierlist or guide and see their bis and go for only that, getting bis every game is just not realistic especially if ur not on a losing streak, slamming items that might not be best but still good will often save a lot of hp and even help you get winning streaks easier, ive seen a lot of ppl either be super low or lose their streak just because they had 6 components laying around trying to chase bis. Dont level/roll right before creep rounds, you just lose eco for no reason unless youre really forced to spend to stay in the game. Try to balance combat and eco augments, usually having 3 combat or 3 eco augments isnt ideal, not always something you can do since you might just be super unlucky but if ur first 2 traits were eco augments, you should probably try to get a combat augment next. Do just a very little bit of scouting, you really dont have to analyse every single board and but you should always check a couple things, if ur playing duelist and see 3 other people that have either tristana or volibear, maybe try a different comp. Sometime ur stuck in ur comp due to ur augments, like extended duel, if ur getting contested either wait with ur rolling until the others are dead and if that wont happen you can just level and try to play a different carry like irelia instead of staying 7 and rolling all game. Scouting on augment rounds is also very important, if you get any hero augment like Midnight Siphon scout if anyone else got that augment, otherwise if 2 people just take the augment without scouting each other both will end up contesting each other. Dont choose your comp before the game starts, there has been so many games where my duo just said im going comp x, and tried to force it no matter what. That is not how you play the game, you might win some games where you end up just hitting or maybe ur playing a strong meta comp and no one is contesting but play what you hit, not what you decided before the game.
Oh for sure I agree! This is by no means a comprehensive list (I plan to make more when I have time in fact), but this was just to list (in my opinion) the ones that are both common and easy to fix. Things like scouting and greeding for bis does require further game knowledge, even if only a little bit. On the other hand, not rolling on stage 2 or not rolling down to exactly 50 gold is sort of just you know it or you don't. Because of that, it's also hard to find resources on those topics because no one would search for it (why search if you already know) and it probably feels too "obvious" for a dedicated resource which was part of my motivation in making this. The stuff you mentioned is definitely important too, and I've seen a lot of friends make them too, so I appreciate the feedback. Also, thank you for watching! Especially since it sounds like you really had no reason to LOL
I notice generally the top challenger flex players let their items dictate most of their decisions (what comp to play, whether to play for winstreak or losestreak, what augments and units to pick up). The game is heavily weighted on your items. You have a very limited selection of items compared to amount of units you see.
@@another7674 yup I'd agree. The components you get more or less determine what comps you can effectively play. This is probably a weird analogy, but it almost reminds me of mahjong (even though I hate mahjong and love TFT LOOOL). Your starting hand in mahjong already tells you what sets you are able to form, so trying to "force" a certain hand or comp will be less effective just by the nature of the odds. I have no idea if this analogy makes any sense to anyone that isn't me tho lmfao
@@fyzzl670 I get that the video isnt supposed to be every single thing ever, just wanted to leave a comment for ppl that might be looking for some more tipps. Also i might not need the guide myself but theres always the chance that you mention things that i didnt know yet especially since i really dont play a lot and the last/only time where i actually played ranked to actually rank up was back it set 6 so there probably some things that got changed that i might not know yet, and i just like to watch random videos that i get recommeded.
3 combat is bis 90% of the time tho
Good stuff
Thanks for watching! Hope it was helpful :)
Tip Clarifications: #1: The point here isn't to "never spend any gold on stage 2." You obviously still need to buy units, but spending gold on rolls is extremely low-value because you don't have much direction yet. Let your free shops give you direction on what to play. #2: For some comps (including Senna reroll!), level 7 is not very impactful, but level 8 is. The question there is whether you're strong enough to make it to level 8 safely, since it is pretty expensive. #3: The specific wording of "CHASING" 3-stars is important here. If you happen to see many copies of Kindred for example as you are still searching for Yone 3, there's nothing wrong with holding them just in case you continue to get lucky (provided you have enough gold to do so). However, if you already have Yone 3, there is no reason to continue dumping gold to find Kindred 3, since Yone is significantly more powerful in the comp, and reaching those higher levels will yield greater board strength. #5: I only talk about rolling to/above 50 here, but the concept still applies if you choose to roll to lower thresholds such as 30 or 40, especially since you won't make back a full threshold without a streak bonus (e.g. 40 gold + 5 passive gold + 4 interest + 0 streak = 49 gold). General Clarifications: 1) All boards shown are just meant to be examples. They are by no means meant to show optimal positioning or items (although I did my best wrt items). Don't try to greed for the exact items I show, since there are lots of other options that will still work just fine. 2) The examples were written during patch 14.7, which had a very different meta than 14.8. I can't make any guarantees that the specific boards will remain particularly powerful (although the relative power differences of the options I discussed should still be similar). 3) I'm sorry about the inconsistent audio. I had a bit of a stuffy nose during one of my recording sessions and it was a lot more obvious than I thought it would be LOL

By far the best TFT beginner's guide that I've found - thank you!
aaaaaaaa thank you so much 😭😭im glad you found it helpful! hope you're having fun with the game :)
I started playing in the very beginning, but didn’t stick around. I learned the basics of the underlying mechanics going on, but that’s it. Came back for a super short stint a while ago, didn’t learn the game really, just played one specific reroll comp and got bored. Now I’m picking it up but for real this time, and yeah, true beginner resources are so scarce. Everyone seems to give such meta specific advice, I really just want the basic fundamentals. Thanks for this.
yeah, its a real shame for sure and thanks so much for the kind words it means a lot since this is the exact reason i made this guide! I'm actually currently in the middle of creating more guides for beginners that I plan to release at the beginning of Set 11 🤫🤫hope you enjoy TFT in the meantime!
