Firman Generator... It's Not a Honda!

We try out a Firman dual fuel 3200IE generator to see how it compares to our Honda EU3000IS. Some of the results surprised us and some did not. We were looking for a smaller option to take up less space than our Honda in the truck bed and to potentially mount on our travel trailer hitch. #hondagenerator #honda #firmangenerator #firman #offgrid #ncsn #outdoorsrv #rvfulltime #rvlife #curtisanddeb...

Cave Adventures ...Adventure or Nightmare?
Looking forward to your winter adventures.
Nice shirt. we are from Sylvan
Sylvan is a beautiful area…we hear the snow has landed, hopefully it will bring up the lake levels for the spring. Thank you for watching 😊
Welcome to the elite 55 class Curtis
Yes, 55 plus is good. I don’t mind the discounts at all. 🤓 Have a great week Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
You want to be more stationary, you purchased the site. Setup is not difficult, but it's a pain if you move a lot. I am a 2-3 week minimum, which gives me time to explore and relax too.
Thank you for watching and for your comment, we're looking forward to a few months in the same spot to really enjoy the area! This will be very different for us. 2-3 weeks minimum is a good number to explore an area. Have you been traveling like that long? Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Great video Awesome content !! Thanks again for sharing your channel Love it
Thank you so much for watching and your comment. Have a great weekend. Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Your "forklift" is actually what is called a hay squeeze. It is used to load and unload stacks of hay onto semi trucks.
Thank you! We had no idea! We’ve only ever seen tractors loading and unloading hay.
S.Bend,In.here,..I feel the U.S. …SHOULD HAVE A DUAL CITIZEN SHIP POLICY FOR;Canadians, British and Irish,may come &go when they want !…welcome ! !
Thanks for watching and that would be fantastic! We always look at it as being a privilege to be able to come soak up the sun for the winter…very thankful! 😎
Glad you got away from the snow. Enjoy your sunny adventures!
Thank you for watching and your comment, we are loving the change. Have you escaped? Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
OMG leave that stste
Thank you for watching and for your comment.
See you at the ORV meetup at Q!
You bet! Looking forward to seeing you!
Always exciting to head south! We are in Kelowna BC so we totally understand!!😊
Canadian (especially Okanogan) summers are beautiful but the winters are just way too long. We always joke that our last time we ever snowboarded was the last day we liked winter 🥶
We put that same inverter and 2 lithium batteries under the bed in our Jayco 24RL. The cooling fan and the cycling of the inverter make noise and generate heat, so we’re planning to move them somewhere else. Maybe you don’t have the same issue.
Thank you for watching and your comment. We have a vented area under the bed, it’s still warm but we are looking at moving it soon as well. Let us know how in works out for you.
Is there any electrical outlets under the table?
Thank you for watching and your question. Yes on electrical plug and a 12 volt cigarette style plug on the drivers side (left side). Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
130 k awesome ! Nice truck , ill have to check out agrimotive , my usual repair shop hanged ownership and i'm not so impressed anymore. thanks happy trails
Thank you for watching and your comment. Agrimotive has been really good to us and has done great work. They will treat you well. Happy Trails to you as well. Have a great weekend Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
We have a very similar system installed in our Jayco travel trailer. Same inverter and BattleBorn lithium batteries. In the video you heard the fan that comes on to cool the inverter whenever it is running. What you will find is that this will cause heat buildup under the bed and the noise of the fan will be disturbing. We are planning to relocate the entire system to a rear storage area in the spring.
Thanks watching and for sharing your experience with the inverter fan, we appreciate your comment. We have it vented to the storage bay; however, it is still warm. We are thinking of moving it to the storage bay and adding a fan to vent the bay. Do you have any pictures to share on your build? Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
We would never have a in RV washer dryer unit again. The loads are small, the dryer is 120V and dry slow. It heats up RV in the summer. For $4 today we washed king size blankets in one load!
Thank you for watching and your comments. All very true, all good points. Debbie is done with laundromats, we have ruined so many good clothes over the last two years from grease and whatever else may be in the washer and/or dryer. Plus some very interesting individuals hanging around them. Not the best, but we are liking it so far. Cheers, 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Wonder if ORV is getting any tips from you guys? :-) Amazing transformation you’ve done to your rig. Hope to run into you sometime. Take care.
Thank you for watching and your kind comment. It is starting to come together, Debbie is truly loving the changes and we are enjoying the upgrades. Now I just need to finish them 🤪🤓 Would be great to cross paths soon. Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Curtis is doing a great job!
Thank you so much 😊 Thank you for watching and your kind comment. It is starting to take shape. Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
i just purchased your return Firman for less than half of your new one on Ebay refurb.
Thank you for watching and your comment. That is a great deal, let us know how it works out for you.
Well done, look forward to seeing project being finished
Thank you for watching and your comment. We look forward to the finish project as well 👍🤓. It is moving in the right direction, but still lots more to do. 🤪🤔🤪 Have a great weekend Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Leaving the hood propped wide open keeps the critters from there since they will not have cover when you do that…I always do it when I am up in the remote rec spots and it seems to work.
Thank you for watching and your comment. That makes sense, I have heard of others doing that along with using lights. When our hood is open it uses a fairly bright LED, so together, that may just work. Mice are awful in your vehicle or your RV.
I have used this same firman Generator for the last three years and I run it only on Propane. It hasn't missed a beat , runs perfect and will run the AC in our 250RDS no problems , The really good thing is I don't have to carry gasoline as my truck is diesel , so one less thing to carry extra of. Also bought it at Costco on sale in the spring time and that helped with the cost. It is also small enough to fit under the slide out so I can lock it up the the frame and only have to run a short 15' 30 amp cord to the trailer making for an easier set up. I point the exhaust out to the side and that helps keep the noise down some (especially on the awning side) . Some times if I'm just a night or two , I'll even leave it in the truck box (I have a canopy) and run a longer cord to the trailer and problem solved of lifting it in and out of the truck , also quieter . PLus without gas in the tank it's a few pounds lighter. Over all we're happy with it and have no regrets and sold the Honda. Did you guys put your inverter into bypass mode when running the generator? I had to do that or the charger robed to much power . It's not a Honda but for the Money I can but three Honda's . So yes if you already have a big Honda I'd probably stick with that. Cheers
Good morning, thank you for watching and your comments. You have good points for helping with the reduction of noise. The weight is a great plus of this unit and the propane is a huge plus. Having to shutoff the charger and run only one major appliance at a time was the final piece for us not to keep it. So many good points and one of course was that price. But too many strikes against it for us. Glad you are having good luck luck with yours and it is working well. I hear from others that they are going strong without issues. Debbie returned it yesterday to Costco without any issues. We are still not sure what we are going to do long term - Honda 3000 for now, but it is too big and too heavy 🤪 Have a great day Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Great video! thanks for taking the time to make it. I'm currently upgrading my 24 ORV 250 RDS with a solar and Inverter. How did you route your AC power cable into the cabinet where the AC breakers are? I can't seem to get push rods or a fish tape through. Any pictures or advice would be welcomed!
Good morning, Thank you for watching and your comment. I dropped the underbelly- I followed the route of the shore power cable up to the panel location and installed a junction box behind the panel. Ran the new shore power cable (extension piece) to the auto transfer then the inverter charger, and then the power supply cable was ran from inverter to the main breaker of the AC panel. With the underbelly dropped I was able to run the two cables safely and securely. Hope that helps Let us know how it goes for you and if you have any additional questions. Cheers, 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Have you considered the Honda 3200. That looks like it's right at 60 pounds or running 2 2200 in parallel? We are looking for a generator solution for our Airstream and very interested in your thoughts and opinions
Thank you for watching and your comment. We have the 2000 watt Honda’s at work and I just find them sooooooo loud. Not sure on the new 2200, but the lunch box style are light but at high rpm they are very loud. Two could work, but I don’t think we would buy two. Need to see some real world testing under full load for new 3200 watt Honda. But is a lunch box style, so I am guessing that it would be loud, but not sure yet. I like the numbers on the spec sheet, will research more soon. Let us know what you find on your research as well. Cheers, Curtis and Debbie
how do you wrestle around those 100 pound generators in and out of your truck?
Good morning, thank you for watching and your comment. The little one with the wheels is pretty easy (I can do it myself still). That Honda is over 135 pounds according to the chart and without wheels and that lifted truck of Debbie’s, it is a beast. Every once in a while I load it myself, but it is not wise by myself (back is never happy). Cheers, Curtis and Debbie
@c1dancer we have a 2024 F250XLT with the 2k power plas package and soft starts on the Kenny. I know that wouldn't handle both a/c units but when we have more actual camping experience ming fo gor atlesdt the 3200. I know I couldn't wrestle a 130 pound generator into the truck
Heavy generators are not fun at all. My work truck has that built in 20 amp 2600 watt inverter package with the dual high output alternators; however we only use this truck in the summer. I still have a tough time in my head running a 30,000 dollar diesel motor as a generator. We run a generator a fair amount in the summer and do need to find a better plan. Keep Your Day Dream installed and Onan built in generator in their air stream (well under it), maybe that is something we will look at soon.
Wow these cars are absolute beauty 😍
Thank you for watching and your comment. They sure had some beautiful ones - always great to see. Just over 400 at the show.
you said six 190W panels, but on the roof, I only saw 5 panels. I think that 1140 watts is probably not enough for the massive battery you have. You'll comfortably run your AC but if you run those batteries down, you won't be able to get it back with a day's solar power. Thus you'll have to start the generator more often, to make up the difference. I'm thinking of a similar power upgrade for my travel trailer. I just upgraded the battery to 440Ah, and got a DC compressor fridge, but the solar is still at 680W, which is often not enough to generate a single day's energy. I plan to replace my 4x170W with 4x250W which will better meet the daily needs.
Good evening John, Thank you for watching and your comments. We had one panel get damaged in transport. It has been replaced and we have added another two panels. Go Powers new panels haven’t changed but are now rated at 200 watts and is not considered mixing panels. So total now is 1540 watts (roof is full now); however in the peak of summer we have been charging above 80 amps with both MPPT controllers. If the AC is running steady it still can’t keep up. We still like having the 750 Amp hours for more reserve, especially with the dogs in the trailer. We also find that the tilt brackets help with the solar strike, especially in later summer when the sun is low here in Canada. Cheers, Curtis and Debbie
Looks like a nice camp site, do you guys book way in advance to get a spot here. ?
It was a great site. We booked this one in March. To get a waterfront site or to get an extended stay then you need to book well in advance. There are usually lots of sites available for shorter stays.
I noticed the piano keyboard below your back window. Nice! Who plays? I have traveling with a mandolin, but am trading it for a parlor guitar. You did indeed find a beautiful spot to camp. Take it easy.
Thank you for watching and your comments. We both play some, I was practicing every day this winter, but sadly when I got back, I have been too busy, or maybe just haven’t taken the time. Music is great, and is nice to have it with you. Enjoy playing 🤓 Green Lake is an amazing place, always feels like home when we come back to this lake. Cheers, Curtis and Debbie
Happy birthday! 🎂
Thank you 😊
Looking fwd to the next video.
Thank you for watching and your comment. We hope to have much more to share next week.
I want to know if your choice of Outdoors RV was the right one. Also, I never go to the dealer to fix anything. I will do it or I will find somebody that can.
Thank you for watching and your comment. Outdoors RV makes a great product and overall are happy with the brand. For us and our needs, we wish we went with a bigger unit. Being full time, taking the unit in and waiting 2 or 3 weeks for the repair(s) is not an option. It is good when you can do it yourself, or get someone to do it for you outside of the dealership. Have a great week and enjoy the journey. Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
@@nextchapterstartsnow Do wish you went 280rks
Good morning, Sorry for the delay, for us we would want opposing slides, a full size living room and east west bed. In the ORV line, they don’t have one that would check all these boxes. The only one probably would be the 280 KVS, but doesn’t have a living room. To check all the boxes for us we end up landing with the monster fifth wheel, and that is a game changer for how we like to camp. So for now we will stay with the 250RDS with more planned changes/upgrades. However if we could go back when we ordered ours, the 280 KVS would be a better fit. How about you, what is the best fit for you? Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Good job on the furnace. That wasn't the Ft. Bragg that I know.
Good morning Mike, Thank you for watching and your comment. It was great getting the furnace running again. 🥳🥂🥳 it is warm now, so not needed, but will get cold again. 🤪 The pictures were taken in Fort Bragg in on the northern California coast. Were you at the Base in North Carolina? Have not been to that one yet. Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Life happens
It sure does 😊
Which PP are you at that you show in this video. Thank you. 😊 🏕️
Thank you for watching and your comment. We camped at Stemwinder provincial park near Hedley/Princeton BC. The hike we went on was at the Swan Lake Wildlife Refuge in Princeton.
@@nextchapterstartsnow at 3:46… was that spot at the nature reserve? Is it reservable or FCFS?
Sorry for the delay in the reply (the filter missed your email) No camping available at the wildlife refuse. The provincial park is a B.C. Park and you can reserve through them online.
It looks like you guys love boondocking like we do. Canada sure is pretty. I wouldn't mind visiting one day - when it's warm. We don't use our furnace anymore since we got our mini-split heat pump. Of course, we don't camp where the temp gets below zero. We've used ours down to around freezing and it works great - very efficient. Its specs say it works down to 5 degrees F (-15C) but we couldn't tell you, as we never go anywhere it gets that cold. We are FTers with a large solar/battery system that allows us to use our motorhome off-grid the same as if we were plugged into an RV park power pedestal. We can even run our heat-pump 24/7 if needed for A/C or heat produced strictly by the sun. However, if you are looking for an inexpensive, quick heat source we have a Mr. Buddy heater that we used before we got our solar system that burns about 1/3 the propane that our furnace does, yet still kept us toasty warm when needed. We even ran a propane line from our big propane tank and have a filter on our heater, so we don't need to use the little, expensive 1 lb. propane bottles. It was 91 degrees yesterday where we're camping now, in North Carolina, so it looks like heating season is over for us till the Fall. It's nice to have options. Take care!
Thank you for watching and your comments. We use our unit when it gets cold still in Canada before we head south, so we need the main furnace to keep our underbelly heated for our waterlines don’t freeze. So fixing it is required before fall. 🙃 What is your power system? How many watts of solar and amp hours of battery do you have?
@@nextchapterstartsnow Five years ago we retired, sold everything, bought an older, low mileage motorhome and hit the road FT. We discovered we love boondocking, so designed and built our solar system ourselves, as we could afford to, on our limited budget. We started by building a 620-watt liftable solar array on the side of our National Tropical MH. Our side array makes a nice bedroom window awning too, practically lifting itself with a couple gas struts, and it's easy to clean, standing safely on the ground. Next, we built a 12v, 560ah LiFePo-4 battery using 8, 280ah prismatic cells and a Heltec 330amp (1,200a surge) BMS to start our generator. These cells fit perfectly under the steps of our MH where our old pair of golf cart batteries used to reside. We insulated the battery compartment, cut a small hole in our step risers and installed a tiny computer CPU fan to keep this space at close to room temperature, so we don't have to worry about the BMS shutting down charging due to low temperature - or their life reduced from getting too hot. Our 12v system uses an 80A Lithium converter/charger, a 1,000w Renogy inverter, a 50a Epever MPPT charge controller and a Lnex battery monitor. All this cost us under $3,500 and meets all our off-grid electrical needs except for our air conditioning, and microwave. By mounting our liftable array on the side of our coach, we left the roof free to rack 8, 550w solar panels down the length of our 35ft Class A, 15" off the roof, above our AC, vents, etc. It shades our entire roof, allowing plenty of cooling air underneath, increasing solar output and reducing the heat load on the air conditioners. Our 4,400w array can run both our A/Cs, our household appliances and charge our batteries at the same time, even in winter. We use a Sungold Power all-in-one 48V, 5,000W Inverter/100A charge controller/battery charger that saves us space as well as money compared to a system built with individual components. Our 16.4kwh 48v battery uses 16, 320ah prismatic cells and a 200amp BMS to keep it safe. Together with our redundant 560ah 12v bank, we have a total of 23.5 kwh of batteries onboard (the equivalent of 18, 100ah lithium batteries) - kept charged by 5,020 watts of solar. It's important to have a fallback position with redundant equipment so you're prepared when something fails at the worst possible time when you are miles away from civilization. We have a back-up inverter, a spare charge controller and BMS for our 12v system too. We removed our old rooftop bedroom A/C and replaced it with an EG4 28.5 seer-2, 12k btu mini-split heat pump on the upper rear of our motorhome. It's super quiet and cools as well as our 14.5k btu soft start equipped Furrion we have up front. It only draws about 1/3rd the power and heats efficiently too, reducing our propane usage. We have no need to hook-up to power pedestals or run our generator anymore, as we can now run everything in our MH strictly off the sun. The neat thing is we built our entire system, including the $1,500 mini split heat pump for around $11,500. If paid a professional else to design and build a system this size, it would have easily cost 2-3 times this amount. We travel around the US a lot, visiting National Parks, and doing the tourist thing, mostly boondocking out west. We spent last winter in the Yuma, AZ, area where we finished up our solar install. We're visiting our son in NC now, where boondocking places are pretty rare. However, we found an RV park that is letting us camp in a spacious site without hook-ups for only $100/mo., saving us $500/mo. off their FHU rates.
Okay I remember your unit now from an earlier conversation. Sounds like it works very well for you. Saving money on our journey is always a great thing. Enjoy your adventures Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
You all have one of the most complete self-contained setups I’ve encountered. All seems well thought out. Well done. We’re just starting out - 5 weeks FT in our rig. No boondocking yet as we’re still working our way from the Midwest US to the SW area. But looking forward to experiencing and experimenting with that way of setup. Take care.
Congratulations on going fulltime! It took us awhile to figure out what we needed for our system. Which, is really good to take your time as it will save you $ in the long run. We learned the hard way that fast decisions/purchases often ended up being the wrong ones! 🤨 Happy travels and thank you for watching. Hope to see you on the road. Cheers Debbie & Curtis
So much fun! 😅🐭
😵💫😵💫😵💫
LOL great video guys and the toad.
Thanks for tuning in 😎
Great information and to show that a year later it's still working, Great Vid.
Thank you for watching and your comment. Love not packing keys anymore, simple and easy upgrade. Cheers 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
if you like fishing - you need to head to the Maritimes - and check our the Miramichi River!
The Maritimes are on our bucket list! When Curtis fully retires we want to do a full Canadian road trip over several months. I will add the Miramichi River to the ‘must see list’. Thank you for the recommendation 😊
Oh bummer! Nothing worse than going from spring back to ❄️. Hang in there!
Thank you for watching and your comment. Good news is, it has been beautiful and warm during the days now. Cold nights with the clear nights, but that is okay. Summer is near 😎 Cheers, 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Gorgeous! The Utah parks are on our bucket list.
Good evening, Thank you for watching and your comment. You will love them. Cheers, 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
Have you retired early? If so, what did you do for health insurance?
Thank you for watching and your comment. Semi retired, my wife Debbie retired in 2020. I work just the summers now. We are Canadian snow birds. We purchase our travel insurance through Costco. Cheers, 🥂 Curtis and Debbie
The snow is gone here
That is good Always nice when snow leaves and spring finally arrives 👍😎
And more rocks 😎
Look rocks 😂 Awesome
Thank you for watching and your comment. Yes, lots and lots of rocks- It is such a beautiful area.
Great views. We’ll be there later in Fall.
Thank you for watching and your comment. Enjoy it when you go in the fall - we will be back.
Thanks for sharing this. It's beautiful.
Thank you for watching and your comment. It is such a beautiful area.
Additional question: Do you happen to have an Amazon link to the specific Calhoun product you use? There’s several different versions. Thanks!
Everywhere kept mentioning Calgon beads and I could only find lilac scented ones so I did some research and found this Calgon Liquid Water Softener, 32 Fluid Ounce a.co/d/cxORiSc It does the job 😊 Cheers, Curtis & Debbie
