NORWAY SALMON FISHING, RIVER GAULA, JUNE 2024
Join us on our quest for early season silver on the mighty Gaula river in Norway. We arrived to find the river in full flood - whole trees floated past the house and landslides echoed through the valley. Initially the river was unfishable and we started out with our biggest flies, fastest sinking heads and up to 18ft sink tips on 10 weight RJC fly rods. By the end of the week we were on floating lines and dressed flies in some places as the water dropped away and cleared to the green tinted clarity the Gaula is famed for.

A fantastic days fishing on the Rio Gallegos, Argentina. Some long awaited rain in the upper reaches, mixed with gale force wind which stirred up the silt created spate like conditions. The resident fish perked up up and our Argentinian friend Gustavo found a pod of running fish in a shallow run. Fish measured 85cm by 54cm. My trusty RJC 13' #8 fly rod did the business again. www.jpsflyfishing.com

Beautiful fish, river and sunset, angling heaven, cheers Peter.
Incredible scenery,! The landscape looks barren but yet so beautiful. Looks like an amazing place to fish!
Your Spanish needs work
Ahí estuve. Grandes truchas. Un sueño
i were fishing at orkla 2 summers ago i lived in the same cabin. its a really nice place to fish down there
Great stuff. Can't beat the sunray there just as it's getting dark.
Thx for trash video
What a fantastic place to fish Alex well done catching some massive trout. Great video. Are you coming up to the wee highland river this year? If so hope to catch up with you.
Brilliant James, looks like an amazing trip and equally amazing fish! Thanks for sharing! 👏
Hi Robert, James is my brother and couldn't make it on this trip, it was amazing though thanks, Alex
@@jpsflyfishing ah apologies Alex. Well done on those fish, incredible stuff 👍
That's my dream 😑 but unfortunately, I dont think I'll ever afford to go to such a magical place to catch sea run browns . Those people are so fortunate in life.
Also my cousin has fished down there a number of times and had some successful trips. What an amazing place!!.
Well done what a fantastic fish, we need some of the offspring of these sea trout transported to the UK!!😎😁
Thanks Peter, the funny thing is the trout were eggs transported from the uk in the first place! Interesting story worth reading in to
@@jpsflyfishing yes I am familiar with the story of how the sea trout were introduced to this part of the world. Paul Young did a great video down there and caught a sea trout of around the 20lb mark, well worth a look!! Given the dearth of Atlantic salmon here in the UK now, wouldn't it be great if the compliment could be returned!! Cheers and tight lines, Peter.
Mate, what a fish! Well done, it looked like you were pulling a car out from the river 😂 Amazing place to fish as well, good for you 👊
Great video. I am planning to go to Orkla for the first time this summer. I'm curious about the beat at 9:30 in your video. I would appreciate it if you could let me know. It is scheduled for late July to early August. I plan to travel the same way as you.^^
It’s on a beat called Forve, tickets are available at the petrol station next to it. Enjoy your trip
Where on the Eden is this please?
Lazonby 👍🏼
Great video, what a memorable day for you & your brother brilliant stuff! well done
Thanks mate, it was a day to remember!
I've watched several of JPS's videos in appalled disbelief. He's a bloody effin' butcher. Please don't anybody adulate this cretin nor adopt his methods. As a rule: It's quite a rare thing to find a salmon fisherman this immature and disrespectful - these types *should* have a guide or ghillie on hand to SMACK them or otherwise adjust their bankside behaviour. OTOH, maybe he has a rich daddy that purchased a stretch on this beat, and boyo wanted to milk it for social media. Here's two simple universal salmon river rules: Do NOT fish with a tippet so strong that you can't snap the fish off with a brisk tug, and NEVER play a fish longer than one minute per estimated pound of weight. Fail fail fail. So achingly sad to see. But easy fix: get the GoPro kids off the river; if the dirtbags can't record/upload it, they won't bother doing it.
Absolutely fantastic for your mum great video mate
Glad you enjoyed it, she's catching more fish than me nowadays..
Great video
Thanks!
Seemed like a fair size fish lost there ! Always next time.
Yeh, I think it was a decent size, we are off again but to the Gaula this time in June so fingers crossed for more chances..
Excellent, congratulations and well done both!
Thanks, it was a day we won't forget in a hurry
The first pool with all the people and the main shelter was ruined by the spring flood 3 years ago and is basicly no longer holding fish wich is a pity since it used to be pretty good. The end of the season when you where there brought another huge flood so it will be interesting to see if the fish wil hold there again this year.
That's interesting, I'm guessing some of the deeper holes were filled in during said flood. Here's hoping for some decent catches this season
Not really, the deeper part out from the whitwater moved a little and changed the current in the entire pool and the salmon didnt like it. The huge stone between the shelter and the rapid wasnt like that earlier and that caused the problem imo. We couldnt see it earlier and now it's above the surface @@jpsflyfishing
its very frustrating losing fish especially when you've been bent into them for 2 or 3 minutes and done nothing wrong, but we just have to hope the next one stays on! lovely video on a beautiful water 👍🏼
That’s salmon fishing, I think if you get half the fish you hook to the bank, you’re doing ok
Just hand the net to the dog, Knows exactly what's required. Well done your Mum, good skills !
The dog would love nothing more haha
Awesome video! I was fishing there the same week as you, just a little further downstream. It was similarly slow, but such a great experience nonetheless. Losing all track of time under the "midnight sun" and casting into the early morning is an experience like no other. Thanks for sharing!
Ah brilliant, which beat were you on? We are heading back this summer but on the Gaula this time..
well done with the video (and Hi from the banks of the Findhorn!). I mostly use 12-13’ rods on the Lower Findhorn, 14’ when the river is up, and i prefer fast and medium fast rods. - are your rods fast, medium fast, or medium in action?
Hi there, what a place to be! Those RJC rods flex right in to the handle yet still manage a tight loop, we mainly use them cause they're awesome to fish with rather than out and out casting machines.
Nice one .
Cheers Mike, hope your well, have you seen any fish spawning by you?
@@jpsflyfishing all good up here. Not came across any salmon spawning yet but hope to. Tight lines for 2024 James and Alex . All the best .
I really love how there’s no music, the setting sun, the sound of the fly line on the cast, the water - perfect perfect perfect
Thanks James, easier to edit like that as well haha
@@jpsflyfishing Thank you for taking us to the river with you. Can’t wait for our next adventure together :)

Haha, this tickled me.. very true!
Only...."did you bring lots of whiskey" ?
Great fishing on a lovely river 😊
Nice looking river James. Great video.
Memories of tales told at the Coilacreich!
The ladies again- it's all so unfair....!!
Haha, so true... first cast as well
Brilliant James, some nice fresh fish there 👏🎣
Thanks Robert, they were few and far between but good fishing at times
Hello..., Nice fishing, beautiful Fish, i'm from Brazil, I also like fishing, my RUclips Channel is " fishing and enjoyig nature, ( pescar e curtir a natureza) , good luck ! 🎣🤓
Brilliant video really enjoyed that well done 👏
Thanks, great RUclips name (last cast any method) btw, made me chuckle 😂
@@jpsflyfishing lol thanks mate it’s just something every angler say right last cast lol and I’ll do fly , spin, bait anything that catches fish 😂thanks 👌
What does a week like this cost?
I think it was around £1200 per person all in. Organised ourselves and some shared costs like rental car and accommodation.
Nice fat silvery fish, good stuff:)
Yeh, there weren’t so many this year but some great condition fish when they did get caught..
Lot less here in Norway too but the big trains like the Orkla and the Gaula wich are my home rivers had very little dip in catches compared to most other rivers so i am still happy even if concerned about the deminishing stocks in general.@@jpsflyfishing
Too bad you caught only small toddlers but the sea trout was deacent so good stuff:) I havent been on Rokkones but i have been to Eggan several times and i like it on different waterlevels from small to rather high, it wasnt small when you where there and it looked quite good i'd say but i guess the local worm anglers had been busy there on the higher water:(
Yes, it was great and the level seemed ok to us, although we were told it was considered low water. We are both hoping to catch a famed Norwegian monster but will have to wait until next season 🤞🏻
It was a bit less salmon this year and VERY few big salmon as the year before was a grilse year, this year was a medium size year so next year we are supposed to see a lot more 20+ salmon so time will show if the cycle is normal or not.@@jpsflyfishing
@@MrKveite1 I hope we get better seasons all round next year, 2020 was a good one so we should start to see some returning Salmon from that over the next few 🤞🏻
Great video guys thanks! I have been fishing that pool in 2019.
Thanks mate, it’s great fishing, can’t sit to get back there next season!
@@jpsflyfishing Have you ever tried Stjørdalselva? That is my river of choice since 2020. Extremely good deal per number of pools vs. price. Plenty of salmon.
@@paweltt no, I’ve only fished the Orkla abroad and most of the UK Salmon rivers.. I would be keen to visit more rivers in Norway though, the quality we’ve seen so far is brilliant. Where do you get tickets and info, Elveguiden?!
Thanks for sharing another great film James - good fishing in fantastic surroundings...
Thanks Richard
Nice looking river James. Great video.
Thanks Mike, the Dee is worth a cast if you ever get chance although it’s had a poor run of fish this year. I hope you’ve been getting a few fish and are making the most of the final weeks of the season. All the best
Great video ! What is your rod ? And the number of the fly line ?
Thanks Romain, most of this is using a Mackenzie 7 weight rod with a gale force equaliser line, fantastic line - I really rate them.. the rod is brilliant too 🙂
Is that the Eden near st Andrew’s
Hi Bob, it’s the Cumbrian Eden. James
Mum chucks a good line a can say that....Nice fish well deserved all the best Taddy
Awesome video mate
Thanks man!
You should include the part of the "take" from now on if you can, thats always the best part onwards
Yeh, I agree.. the take is always the best but these videos are often 10 hours of fishing condensed in to an hour of filming and 10 minutes of video so I usually miss the take. I’ve got a few decent videos of the take of fishing on the Dee but will try and get a few more. Tight lines, James
Fantastic stuff James, great to see your Mum getting another fish! Well done.
Thanks Robert, she’s having a great season! Hope you’re getting amongst a few fish too? Tight lines, James
@@jpsflyfishing nothing yet, heading up to Deeside again in a couple of weeks so fingers crossed for a fish or two 👍
What size rod were you guys using?
A few different rods featured from 13'6 to 14'9 but think the smaller of those were the main ones we used on this trip.
well done your Mum.. again! And she had a very good ghillie who very ably assisted, hope she tipped well :). You both did well to hook fish as it looked like it was still pretty coloured, well done :)
Thanks Andrew, she’s having a great season after only starting fishing in ‘21.. massive black and yellow Snaelda doing the business, I was also surprised she caught one as I was thinking at the time it’s border line fishable, it did clear later on a touch but the day after was probably the one to be out on ideally.
