Not Just Yesterday: The Ballad of Tam Lin Revisited

Happy Roddy day everyone! In honor of what would have been Roddy McDowall's 96th birthday today, I felt it was fitting to revisit episode 6 of Not Just Yesterday and cover Roddy's single directorial effort, starring his friend Ava Gardner and Ian McShane, "The Ballad of Tam Lin." This project was so close to Roddy's heart, and I hope you will enjoy hearing of all the ups and downs and ins and o...

IMDbios Episode Two is here! This week our star is the magnificent Ava Gardner. This episode was made with information from Wikipedia, johnstoncountync.org, and recorded information from Ava's friend Roddy McDowall, due to a lack of information on Ava's actual IMDb biography page. So, this episode is a wee bit longer than planned, but I feel it does Ava the justice she deserves. This bio was ma...

Hi Y'all! I wasn't originally planning on posting this here. I made it for instagram. But since May 23rd was Rosemary Clooney's birthday, and she meant so much to me, and since she is part of Old Hollywood, I figured; why not? Its not a bio, but it's a good song and I love singing it so much. Hope you enjoy it, and your holiday weekend! Be well, and all the best! -Nasha

This video has a dual purpose, in the beginning there's a life update; but primarily this video is a memorial tribute to my grandmother and the extremely positive influence she was on my life. She would have been 101 years old in May, and her presence in my life was so important to me, so I felt I had to make a video commemorating her. I've called it "Unforgettable", because that is my grandma ...

WHAT A WONDERFUL VIDEO!! i never expected to find such a heartfelt and well-researched biography on someone as (unfortunately) niche as Roddy McDowall, but i'm so glad i did!! I became a fan of his around a year ago now and have been slowly chipping away at that enormous filmography of his, and my motivation's exceeded tenfold with this video!! Thank you so much for such a comprehensive video on his life... he truly was underrated and underappreciated during his time AND now, so i'm glad there's still love for him even nowadays! He may be an 'unusual' actor for someone my age to like, but i think that's just what makes him all the more special to me. Great video once again!! 🤩🫶

Wow thank you so much for your extremely kind words! I’m bowled over with gratitude! I truly am! I’m so glad my video accomplished what I had hoped for in making it. I’ve loved Roddy deeply since 2017, and at the time that I fell into his work and discovered him, there was very little of his filmography available online. It was so difficult to find his films, and mentioning his name almost always brought responses that consisted of “who?” Or “what’s a Roddy McDowall movie?!” Broke my heart. I wanted people to know how amazing he was and how important he was and still is in regards to his influence in the film preservation movement. We wouldn’t have half the movies on dvd today that we have if it weren’t for him. He was a titan of his time and I deeply miss him! I love meeting and talking to other people who are his fans. He truly left an indelible positive mark on the world, and everyone I know who was touched by him in their lives, be it in person or through his films turn out to be truly beautiful and warm people! I love how he brings so many people together! Thank you so much for watching my video, I’m so thrilled you enjoyed it. It meant the world to me to make it and put it out there for people to enjoy. The responses have all been so positive and I’m just so happy that so many have enjoyed it. Thank you again so much! 🌹🌹🌹🌹

My Father would see Cary Grant in movies and say to himself "I know him, but how and where from. They keep on saying he was from Bristol and I am from Southampton". Once they said his actual name was Archibald Leash, my Father recognized that he really did know him while growing up in Southampton. In all the years that I have seen and read about Cary Grant, yours is the first mention of Southampton. Thank you for confirming that what my Father said was accurate.

Ingrid Bergman possessed the type of beauty that was matchless, unparalleled. This Oscar-winning actor had a thriving career in the 40's till the early 50's when Stromboli happened and the trajectory of her career took a beating. Things happen not as we want them to, but according to a pre-ordained scheme of things, over which we have little or no control. Ingrid had gone through a whirlwind of many different phases and weathered many storms with a roller-coaster of emotions. But she returned triumph to the USA with the film 'Anastasia' in 1956. Ingrid is no longer with us, but has left a legacy of her great films that are even enjoyed to this very day. All things come to an end, yet each ending is it's own beginning, while in others, sadness often comes from this perennial rhythm of nature. In an interview Ingrid once advised : "Be yourself, the world worships the original".

@@NashaDean I was born in the early 50's, but my folks were huge movie-buffs. It is through them and the many DVD's that we possessed that I learnt in depth of her life and career. Ingrid is truly irreplaceable. She was very much a real human-being with no airs or false pride. To sum her up best as " A very down-to-earth respectable human being, despite her world-wide fame, glamour and wealth"

    • @NashaDean
      @NashaDean 6 месяцев назад

@ianedwards4400 wow that is such a wonderfully apt description! I love that! I’m an elder millennial (late 80s baby) but my grandparents were movie buffs, or rather my gramma was. And she raised me on the classics, a lot of which featured Ingrid. I remember the first time I ever saw her in Casablanca she literally took my breath away. I thought “wow! What a beautiful lady!” She immediately captivated me, and I wanted to see every film I could get my hands on. At the time, all that was available was gaslight, Casablanca and notorious. So of course those were the films I watched constantly. To this day, Notorious and Gaslight are my favorite films. Notorious is a comfort movie for me, I put it on when I’m cleaning or have a project I need to do. I’ve seen the film so many times, just listening to the audio as the movie plays in the background, I can see the film in my head. So I can concentrate on what I’m doing while enjoying the film at the same time and never having to look at the screen to know what’s going on. And even then, Ingrid’s beauty radiates. Her voice is like music. I really really love her.

You are fantastic. Your tone and projection is perfect. I can’t stand singers these days who just seem to scream and strain their lungs. Your voice is effortless. But of course, kids today want noise and rap crap, and don’t appreciate or understand real quality music. Xx❤

My favorite actor since I was a child of 7 years old. I was taken in by his boyish looks even in the adult role I saw him first. I’ve seen every movie he made and watched all the TV shows as well. I own many of his films on DVD and watch them often. Roddy was very intellectual and grew up fast having to leave London at an early age and became a successful child star. Then Roddy went on to stage and television and transitioned near perfectly but not easily into an adult actor. Not many were able to succeed from child to adult star. ⭐️ I wrote to Roddy in 1976. He sent me a personal postcard from Universal Studios and I still cherish that today. Roddy was in the short lived Sci-fi series Fantastic Voyage and my cousin called the studio where he was filming. I had the phone numbers for him to try and reach him on the phone. Whomever answered the phone put him on hold and Roddy was not working at the moment between takes so Tony (my cousin) said Hello, this is Tony Garofolo (KDKA Pittsburgh) Radio host. Then put me on the phone and I was so shocked to hear his voice on the other side. I cried “I have been watching you for years and just love everything you do”. Roddy was very nice and seemed easy to just say hello to. It was the thrill of a lifetime for a 14 year old girl. 💜 Then, years go by, it’s February 26, 1996 and I finally got to see Roddy McDowall on stage. It was Dial M For Murder in Philadelphia. My family and I went to see the play and when he came on the stage the applause was loud enough and long enough for him to take a quick bow. I was in awe when I saw him on stage and it was a very memorable show. I enjoyed this mini biography of Roddy McDowall very much. Rest in Peace 9/17/28-10/3/98 🩷🙏🩷

Wow what a sweet memory! Thank you so much for sharing that! I can relate to your story so deeply, tho I never met Roddy or saw him in person in anything, (I was only 10 when he died and lived on the other side of the country). I grew up watching Roddy’s movies and I too have every single movie he ever made with a couple of exceptions. I’ve been seeing Roddy‘s films and TV shows since I was two years old. He’s literally been part of my life since infancy, and I just adore him so deeply. You were so fortunate to be able to speak to him and to see him in dial m for murder. What a treat that must have been! I’m so glad you enjoyed this bio. It was a delight to make 😊❤️❤️❤️

@@NashaDean Thank you. I am 61 years old and still watch Roddy all the time. He was such a talented actor in various character types he could play anything convincingly. I love his role in Fright Night 1985. The name of his character is Peter Vincent. To pay homage to Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. I recently watched a Fright Night convention and was wondering if someone would ask how it was working with Roddy. They all had nice things to say about him. Most had said his professionalism and friendliness to everyone being he was such a distinguished actor by 1984/1985. The young actors in the movie learned a great deal from Mr. McDowall and Mr. Sarandon. Chris Sarandon became very emotional when the question was asked because he and his wife were very close to Roddy even before they made Fright Night. He was close to Roddy in his final days and saw him not long before he died October 3, 1998. I could talk about Roddy all day. 💜✨

It's amazing what the human spirit can endure and overcome. It is heartbreaking to realize the depth of his childhood trauma. One would never guess that the Cary Grant in film had demons. I am so happy to know that he rejoiced in being a father and that in his later years, his life ended happily. He had indeed become Cary Grant. What he put Ms Cannon through was chilling and her forgiveness and understanding speaks highly of her. Thank you for this excellent presentation.

Thank you so much for your kind comments! And I completely agree! He went through so much. It’s just a shame that his therapist wasn’t any real help. And it’s even more of a shame that there were no words for abuse or mental illness at that time. Not to diagnose anyone as I’m not a psychiatrist, but he screams borderline personality disorder to me. Which, would fit perfectly because he was both abused and neglected as a child and never had his needs met. Hence his strong abandonment issues. When BPD goes untreated it gets worse and can cause the sufferer to change drastically, which explains why he was sweet to one wife and awful to the others. The situations of his life and stressors at the time seem to have added to his mental struggles. With the right therapist and proper medication today, Cary probably would have healed so much sooner, and hurt no one. Maybe his first marriage could have worked out. It’s a true tragedy. He just wanted to be loved but he didn’t know how to love back. And yes Dyan does seem an incredible woman. I absolutely would not have forgiven cary after treatment like that and would have gone no contact, burnt bridges forever. And would have kept the child from him. Cary was fully dangerous during his marriage and divorce to Dyan, not just to Dyan but also to himself. Its truly miraculous that everything worked out well in the end. I’m glad you enjoyed the film, it was truly a roller coaster 🎢 to make but I enjoyed creating it and learning what I learned. Even tho it made me cry a lot lol

@NashaDean Thank you for responding. I agree with you about Ms Cannon's ability to forgive and that what CG probably suffered was BP. I too, most definitely cried over quite a bit of this. It's amazing that he was able to 'pretend' to such a high degree on film. Remarkable, really.
