Tie the Cyclops Baitfish - A Hook-Point-up Fly for Everything From Bass to Redfish to Baby Tarpon
The Cyclops Baitfish is a multi-purpose minnow pattern that slides through snags easily and can be made to sink at varying rates depending on the bead or cone used. It has great action and catches a wide variety of fish in both fresh and saltwater. The fly is a combination of Mike Craycraft’s Epoxy Zonker and a Clouser Minnow with a bead substituted for the lead eyes. The action is different from a Clouser, with the balance point further back.

Painting Eyes on Beads for Fly Tying
Просмотров 819Год назад
Beads are most often seen in coldwater trout flies but also make a great addition to warmwater and saltwater flies. Beads are easy to tie on and don't snag on vegetation and other structure like dumbbell or beadchain eyes. While lead dumbbell eyes are available in many colors with painted on eyes, beads are typically available only plated or painted in a solid color. If you want painted on eyes...
The Foiled Again Minnow: A Fly That Catches Big Fish Feeding on Tiny Minnows
Просмотров 693Год назад
About the Foiled Again Minnow The Foiled Again Minnow is a simple fly originally tied to catch crappie and American shad feeding on baby mosquitofish. It has since caught plenty of each of those species along with largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, and lots of panfish. Although it mimics the smallest of baitfish, it is tied on an oversized hook capable of hooking and landing large predators....
Tie the Gamboozler, a Small Baitfish Fly for Largemouth Bass, Panfish and Other Predators
Просмотров 6182 года назад
About the Gamboozler The Gamboozler , as the name suggests, was initially tied to mimic gambusia, or Mosquitofish, that are prolific in freshwater all over Florida. It’s an excellent choice when largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and other predators are feeding on mosquitofish or other small baitfish. The fly is basically a variation on the Crazy Charlie, adapted to fish midwater and made to lo...
Tie the Pad Crawler, a Weedless Bass Fly for Thick Vegetation
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
About the Pad Crawler The Pad Crawler is a largemouth bass fly designed specifically for fishing heavy cover. The folded foam head causes the fly to dive when stripped and, more importantly, acts as a weed guard. It can be thrown into the middle of lily pads and other vegetation and, if stripped steadily, usually comes through without getting snagged. Pad Crawler Recipe Hook: Mustad 91768BLN Ji...
Tie the Chewbacca for Snook, Redfish, Baby Tarpon and Largemouth Bass
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.2 года назад
The Chewbacca, a knock-off of Pinczkowski’s Bad Hair Day, is one of my favorite flies for working mangrove edges, oyster bars, docks and other structure. It’s easy to cast, has great action in the water, and is relatively weedless. It is an excellent fly for snook, redfish, smaller tarpon, largemouth bass and anything else that eats larger baitfish. Chewbacca Recipe Hook: Mustad 91768BLN 28° ji...
Tying the Clouser Minnow: easy to follow instruction for a popular and productive fly
Просмотров 6852 года назад
The Clouser Minnow, originally designed by Bob Clouser in 1987 for smallmouth bass, has likely caught more species than any other fly in existence. He took the best attributes of a bucktail jig and modified them for the fly rod. The lead eyes, the key to this fly, turn a Clouser over in the water so it rides hook-point-up and give it a jigging motion when it is stripped through the water. Becau...
Tying the Seaducer, an All-Around Saltwater Fly Suitable for Newer Tyers
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.2 года назад
Commercial snook fisherman Homer Rhodes is credited with creating the Seaducer, originally the Homer Rhodes Streamer, in the 1940's. The fly was ultimately given a more colorful name by a popular fly-fishing writer in the 1980's when "Sea" and "Seduce," were combined to form "Seaducer." The Seaducer is a simple yet versatile and productive fly pattern. It is generally considered a saltwater fly...
Fly Fishing Florida's St. John's River for American Shad. What you'll see and how to get started.
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.3 года назад
Florida’s St. Johns River is home to the southernmost American shad migration on the east coast of the United States. The annual shad migration, during the winter months, is eagerly anticipated by the local fly fishing community as well as by many visitors from out of town. These anadromous fish, whose life cycle is remarkably similar to salmon and steelhead, run up the St. Johns to spawn. Duri...
Tie the Fleeing Crab, a Simple Crab Pattern that Redfish Can't Pass Up
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.3 года назад
The Fleeing Crab is one of of our favorite patterns for central Florida redfish. Attributed to Lenny Moffo, the pattern is a modification of Del Brown’s classic Merkin Crab. It is one of the few flies I have seen a spooked redfish stop to pick up. It is a great choice for not only redfish but bonefish, black drum, and any other species that appreciates a good crab dinner. Fleeing Crab Recipe Ho...

Basic Tying: Which Direction Should You Wrap Thread when Tying a Fly?
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.3 года назад
The direction in which you wrap thread around a hook doesn’t necessarily matter, but make sure you are consistent. Typically, materials should be wrapped around the hook in the same direction as the thread. Most right handed tyers wrap clockwise around the hook (when viewed from the eye end), with left handed tyers wrapping counter-clockwise. This video is part of our “Basic Fly Tying” playlist...

This is exactly the right way to tie a Seaducer. Great looking fly!
Thank you very much!
You make tying in those feathers look way easier than it is. Props to you sir!
Thanks! It definitely gets easier with practice. However . . . what you didn't see is the edited out attempts when the feathers weren't quite straight or were a little uneven.
🤝
Thank you! I have watched a bunch of videos and this one was the best! I finally can do all these techniques.
You're very welcome! That is exactly what we were hoping for when we put together these videos. Thank you for your comment.
Great series!
Thanks! We're glad you're enjoying it.
nice guerilla bug
Thanks! Glad you like it.
Great stuff! Thanks for putting the work in!
Thanks! We're glad you enjoyed it.
Very helpful. tyvm!
Thanks for your comment! We're glad you found it helpful.
Nice video. Very informative. I never knew the shad ran so far south. I’ve had fun fishing them in the Hudson River of New York in the past.
Thanks for your comment. We're glad you enjoyed the video. The St. Johns shad fishery is definitely unique! If you ever get the urge to come down and catch a shad in Florida, hit us up for a report.
Anand 3rd vid that doesn't start at the beginning.
If you want help learning how to get thread started on a hook, or even how to put a hook in a vise, we have a video focusing specifically on that. Like the video you just watched, it is part of our Basic Fly Tying Class. The class is made up of a series of short skills videos leading up to fly tying tutorials for several saltwater and warmwater flies. Here's a link to the playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLbZGtaw7OzRiNti24IlUnO1SZxLmc0ZlK
2nd vid I've started watching that doesn't show starting the thread on the hook.

Okay. That's for finishing. What about initially attaching thread to hook so it doesn't spin around on it while wrapping the hair, feathers etc.
We have a video for starting thread on a hook as well. Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/rhTUi0X1FP8/видео.htmlsi=ns1brBeXcX-zPzvg. These videos are both part of our Basic Fly Tying playlist, which you will find here: ruclips.net/p/PLbZGtaw7OzRiNti24IlUnO1SZxLmc0ZlK
nice stuff on your site
Thanks! We're glad you're enjoying it.
Ingenious but simple and likely effective. Thanks
Thanks! We're glad you like it.
Had a great evening of baby tarpon fishing tonight. The Schminnow was all they wanted.
Sounds like a good time! Baby tarpon definitely love it.
That's a great idea! thank you for the tips 🎣
Thanks! We're glad you found it helpful.
great name for this fly. in scotland sprog is slang for baby.
Thanks! Glad you like it. That was completely unintended but worked out way better than it could have.
Love the attribution at the beginning. An easy fly that works!
Thanks for your comment. You've got to love a fly that is quick and easy to tie and catches fish as well as this one does!
I can't find the description. Plerse tell m what style and size of hook you are using so I can get some.
Hi Ned, I use a Mustad 91768BLN Jig Hook, #2, or Ahrex TP650, #1/0. The fly also works pretty well on a standard bass stinger hook (like the Mustad B10S) and is what I initially tied the fly on before finding the jig hooks referenced above. The description is pretty easy to find on a computer web browser but more difficult on a phone. If you're watching on a phone clicking on the video title should bring up the description.
I don't know... it will always be called "TJ's Aluminium'," pronounced with a proper British accent, in my head. 😂
Works for me! I considered using the original name here but my "British" accent would have gotten some comments.
It's a Merkin variation and should be acknowledged as such!
Thanks for your comment. You are absolutely correct. We note at about the 25 second mark in the video, as well as in the video description, that the fly is attributed to Lenny Moffo and "is a modified version of Del Brown’s classic Merkin crab."
@orlandooutfitters6525 Sorry I meant in the title of the vid!
thanks...
thanks, nice looking fly
Thank you! We're glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video. Finally, fishing content that's practical, interesting, and not overhyped or ridden w/ product placements. Thanks.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. That is exactly what we were trying to accomplish.
Great pattern. Thanks for sharing! The two common problems I have with bass flies are they are either top heavy or they foul. This solves both!
Thank you very much. We hope it works as well for you as it has for us.
wow such a concise and informative video! thank you very much!
You're very welcome! We're glad you found it helpful. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Great pattern. I love to fish for bass in lily pads. I’m adding this pattern to my fly arsenal.
Thank you. That's great to hear! We hope you catch lots of fish on them.
Fishy looking pattern. Putting your lures in to heavy cover is a big part of bass fishing. This fly will get it done
Thanks! Glad you like it. That's exactly what it's for.
I think I will "tweak" this great idea a little and make an Alevin by using Orange bead as a sack!!!!
Give it a try! I'll bet it works well.
I really like the looks of this one.
Thanks! We hope you'll tie a few and see how the fish like it.
Nice tie. It has a unique way of looking like a food item of no particular type but something a fish would like. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you very much! Just like you point out, it's a generalist pattern that works for lots of species.
Looks like fun! no boat, so I guess I’m out of luck. Alas!
Having a boat does make it easier - but as long as we don't have a high water year you can still catch them on foot. Providing details on walk-in fishing was beyond the scope of our video. We sell a book by Luc Desjarlais titled "Wade Fly Fishing The Upper St. Johns River Basin for American Shad." Also, there are usually a couple of walk-in trips organized each season by the "Orlando Kayak Fishing Club" and "Shad on Fly," both of which have their own Facebook groups.
That was great cause you had explained the whip finished step by step thank you for doing that it really explaned a lot on how to doing it thank you again
Thank you for taking the time to comment. We're glad you found the video helpful!
This looks like a real fish catching bug. Thank you
Thank you! It definitely catches some fish. We hope you get a chance to tie some up and try them out.
Essa e boa pra blakbass estou a procura de uma mosca boa AQ no Brasil e muito difícil pesca esse peixe
Excellent video! You learn something new everyday! I appreciate you!
Thanks so much! We're glad you enjoyed it.
Hey there what brand are those cutter, that crimp also?
Those are the Xuron FF1 combination cutter / short nose plier. You can find them on our website at orlandooutfitters.com/collections/fly-tying-tools/products/xuron-ff-1-pliers.
what about gators in the water?..i live in california.. so i really dont know how far gators go north, and safe wading, around there
Alligators are in fresh and brackish water all over Florida. We give them space and they usually give us space. They are less active during cooler months when the shad are in but we see them almost every time we fish. We watch where we wade, generally don’t wade too deep, and are careful about landing and releasing fish. They can be more aggressive during mating season or if they have been fed. We just give them some space and move on. I don’t do as much wading in freshwater in the summer but will still wade faster water and shallow edges. When I take my small children fishing I prefer to be in a boat rather than on the shore or in the water.
Great video, love Orlando Outfitters, use to go there all the time till we moved to Jacksonville
Thank you very much! Stop by and see us next time you get down to Orlando.
Nice work. Thankyou.
Thank you very much!

Thanks! Glad you like it.
Very nice fly. Would be very effective in Florida. I am definitely going to tie some and fish them.
That sounds great! I hope they work for you.
Nice fly!
Thanks! We appreciate it.
Just made my first fly! Came out pretty good 👍
That's great! We hope you get a chance to try it out on some fish soon.
I am having trouble getting slotted tungsten beads to anchor on Jig hooks. should I glue them in? They move when I hold it to draw the clinch knot tight and it basically ruins my tied fly.
Thanks for your question. I haven't dealt with that exact issue before so may not be the best person to give advice here. I would make sure the materials directly behind the bead are tied in firmly and are bulky enough to hold the bead in place. If that didn't work I might try some UV resin after fixing the bead in place but you should be able to secure the bead without that. You could also try holding the bend of the hook with hemostats while tightening instead of grabbing the fly itself. Can anyone else who uses slotted beads with jig hooks suggest a fix?
@@orlandooutfitters6525 Thank You for even taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.
over here ( in Europe) we use this fly ( in zillion different colour combos) for trout.
Good to know. Thank you for your comment. I'll bet you call it by a different name!
great content, thanks!
Thanks! We're glad you're enjoying it.
