Hopefully, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill type of bass fishing channel.
Crappie in December /// Lake Carlyle, Illinois
After years of missing out on all the fun, I finally decided to get on the bandwagon and get forward facing sonar. I am glad I did!

I spent a day on the lake in mid-March trying to go about it without any preconceived notions and just work off of what the day was telling me. While it certainly wasn't a massive bag, it was an effective day.

On the last day of our trip, we decided to hit up this lake. We had never been to it before nor did we know much about it. I was told it had spotted bass so it sounded like fun!

Getting Dialed on Guntersville /// Early March Bass Fishing

Some friends and I met up at Guntersville for a few days of fishing. While the weather didn't exactly cooperate for the first few days, we did manage to catch fish and get some clues as to what we should be doing. That all culminated in this video when we finally got some stable weather.

After messing around with the punching bite the day before, I decided that I really wanted to dive off into in today. While it was a grind and I didn't get a ton of bites, it was well worth it!

what was the water temp?
I’m not sure now. Maybe around 48 or so?
I have also fished Carlyle lake recently if you could make a video on some of your spots or names of the best coves you have had luck at would be pretty cool.
That is a great idea. I’ll try to film that next time I’m out on Carlyle.
Crappie videos or bass videos… which one do you like to see?
I guess I sorta like em all
crappie
Crappie!
I have Shimano reels that I bought in the 90s that I still use every time I go fishing. Shimano reels last if you take care of them.
I believe that! My dad has some from that timeframe (and they were the cheap ones, too!) that still work just fine today. That being said, any of the newer shimano reels that are entry level priced have not held up well for me.
Hello , Can it be used for 2oz baits?
I don’t see why not.
I been fishing smith 35 years and have never caught over a 30 lb 5 fish BASS LIMIT but once and there was a 11lber in that limit and it was in the spring on a Monday sight fishing I knew this was click bait but good day men..
Ha! I’m glad you liked it. I figured the title would at least get some engagement. That is quite the lake you have there. We went back down to G’ville again over the summer and dang near audibled and went to Smith instead.
Great video ! Thanks for sharing! Is that a 1oz weight on the punching rig ? Ive been fishing Guntersville a good bit since Spring but haven't tried punching yet but have been doing pretty good on the frog lately. Thanks again
I’m pretty sure it was a 1 1/4 oz weight but I’m not sure.
8lb 15oz world record spotted bass was caught from Smith in 1978
That is a beast!
15 to 18lbs is a good bag of spots on Smith lake. I caught a 6lb 2oz spot in December 1993 on Smith. A couple of 6lbers are caught each year on Smith. This lake held some world record spots and they took our spots and stocked them in California and now they hold the world record.
I did not know that. That’s incredible!
Sweet Home Alabama,,,,,Alabama does Fishing and great Music..,,,,nice video yall..
Thanks!
Dude………. Awesome video 👍🏻
Thanks!
a little bit of punching....like only punching...my man!
I mean… there were a few frog catches in there!
I mean, you really can’t get upset when it turns into a topwater day!
When it comes to punching I’ll admit I’m a noob! Done a lot of flipping and pitching. But since I’ll be joining you and Wes on “G” as someone else put it, let’s fricken go! Gonna get learnt on some thangs haha! The tip about not using natural colors in punching thick grass is a new one for me.
We are gonna have a good time! I’m sure of it!
Hey partner, what kind of knot are you tying with the straight shank hook?
I used to tie a palomar knot but I’ve been using a snell knot exclusively for the last few years. Honestly, I never had a problem with the palomar. I just decided to give the snell a try and never went back.
The flip bite on G is getting goooood. You'll have a good trip
I’ll be down there in about 2 weeks! I can’t wait!
Thank you, extremely educational
Thanks!
Great explanation! Very useful information!
Thanks!
Great video bro 👊🏾
Thanks!
Boom! I’m back and ready to go!
I need to get me a couple of those
I caught a couple on them yesterday too!
The juice!
Ha!
45 lb. record striper was caught in Smith Lake... (but I didn't catch it... sigh...)
Geez! I couldn’t imagine!
Wat was that crazy looking lure u were fishing?
Which one? For most of them, I was using a white Burner Craw from Gambler Lures.
It's known as a war mouth all over the country
I have since learned that. However, I can promise you that they don’t call them that where I’m from.
I like that Big Bite trailer.
It’s a good one!
Great video Steve, I definitely want to make it to that place someday.
Let’s go this July!
Love flipping and punching grass
Like getting in a fist fight!
How heavy was that first big one???
I don’t remember now but almost 5? Pretty sure I weighed it but can’t remember if it made it to the video.
I’ve always wanted to go to Kentucky lake also, such a big lake to break down. I also heard that Kentucky lake is coming back.
The results are looking that way. It’s also turned into a good smallie lake.
Nice vid it’s crazy we spend a whole bunch of money on our boats and equipment for a 2-3 min fight then we release em gatta love bass fishing
Money well spent!
20lbs is a good bag on smith
Is that all spots or a combo with largemouth?
Great frog. We don’t walk them here in Florida. Just pop the frog to make that “bloop” and pause it….they usually crush it on the pause.
Florida is one of the few unique places I’ve never had the chance to really fish. But based on your comment and what I’ve kind of pieced together, would I be correct in guessing that the bass seem to like a slower presentation more often than not there?
My buddy went into diabetic shock and I had to extract him out of the wilderness witch consisted of a 2 mile boat ride then 10 miles to the highway then a 3 hour ride to the hospital he then spent 3 days in ICU
Holy cow! Hope he made it through ok!
did you move down by the ozarks cuz ive fished against you at okoboji in iowa.
I moved down to Illinois, actually. However, LOZ is the best lake remotely close to me so I try to get over there a few times a winter/spring. Hoping to go again this weekend.
But I do really miss Okoboji!
I like Lews
Me too!
Thanks for not just doing jig's I understand it's a mostly a good jig lake but you Fish my style of fishing. I love cranking..
Ha! Considering the times of year that I go there, it’s rarely great for a jig. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always a good jig lake. But winter and early spring, it’s really hard to beat a jerkbait and then a crankbait a little later.
Nice video! I love watching you set the hook on them while fishing a jerkbait! Get's me amped up to throw it more here in central Iowa.
Should have re-read that post. Laughing at my awesome grammar?
I do miss Iowa fishing! You guys got some good lakes there.
@@stevebasingerfishing I have yet to crack the code on 12 mile and brushy but their are lots of good ones
I never fished Brushy and very little on 12 Mile. Green Valley was always my favorite to go to in that area. I’ve also heard that Viking is incredible right now.
@@stevebasingerfishing Might have to check that one out! I've heard there are big ones in there.
dude that looked like so much fun!!!
I mean, topwater is never a bad time!
Bro kept all his fish but none of dudes
👍
Little froggy fun time!
The best time!
Rapala Ripstops are excellent for beginners for jerk baits, sadly being discounted in favor of the new Rapala PXR Mavrik 110.
I never did throw a ripstop. I was never a big fan of Rapala jerkbaits from way before that. But maybe I should have gave it a try?
New viewer.....I'm headed down to LOTO in 2 weeks...planning on using wacky worm and jigs around docks....wadda you think?
I would expect that you’ll get bites on both of those. Bass ought to be on beds by that point, if not really close to it.
That’s cool you ran into Mikey Bawlz. I had to do a second take and then I recognized his voice 🎣
He’s a riot! I spent a little time with him over that weekend too.
Was it Wheeler that gave you the waypoints??
Ha! I ain’t that important!
I love catching them on a jerkbait. For me it’s like playing with a cat. When you play with a cat you have to sorta entice them into attacking the toy. You have to watch their body movements and see what’s going to entice them to attack. Jerkbait fishing is like that in my mind. Also glide baits kinda works that way too.
I’ve been wanting to get on the glide bait train. I tried a few years ago but I have such a hard time to convince myself that I’m fishing for one good bite.
Dang that biggun swallowed that crank! You know she wanted it.
Just like I drew it up!
Gettem!
👊
I do love me some spring time bass fishing!
Yep that's why I don't listen to other petty fishermen who cry when I cross lines or crowd them. Nobody owns the water right? Got a problem don't fish 😢😢 can't have it both ways.
To each their own. I’m not a fan of crowding folks but you are correct. It is public water.
