Preliminary Data Analysis: Efflux Mk. III
Просмотров 8111 месяцев назад
Looking at how the plane and I performed during its first few flights. Top speed was around 33m/s / 75mph, and max loads were around 4/-6g. It seems a combination of ungodly roll rate / PIO, dutch roll, and wing rock near stall produced the adverse roll characteristics on the maiden flight. I definitely could've done better on countering the spin and putting it down at the end as well. Roll cha...

Two steps forwards, one step back. I added drooped cuffs to the outboard of the wing to add wash-out, along with some wingtips to add a titch of roll stability. I also drastically decreased the roll control rates, which are still too high. It flew a lot better this time, though canard flutter cut the second flight short. A canard strengthening/redesign is in order, as well as making my mods per...

    • @Pieliker96_
      @Pieliker96_ Месяц назад

      It's a very primitive system, all passive. The tow lines are spooled around drogues which helps them unravel on launch and keeps storing and transporting them manageable without tangling. The other end of the tow line is attached to a chute which is just friction fit into a tube attached to the aircraft. A plane catches the line, gets yanked, and yanks out the parachute. Works often and well enough

    Insane power on tap there. I feel like even once you're out of snag chutes, with some careful maneuvering via FPV you could probably bring down one of the flitefest signature "raid boss" giant combat builds by just merging up against a wingtip or tail and power-shoving it into an unrecoverable flight attitude! A bit like RAF pilots used to do to the V1s in the Battle of Britain with the ol' wingtip nudge.

    That's a lot of control surfaces. Is that just for redundancy?

    • @Pieliker96_
      @Pieliker96_ 3 месяца назад

      I started out with the center ones separate because I wanted them to be able to deal with the massive amounts of propwash, and also because that's where the sweep angle of the wing changes so I can't carry the hingeline through there. When I got done building a wing I thought it looked a bit too much for one servo so I did some calcs to make sure it was then subdivided it for two servos. Redundancy is a side effect of that process, I guess.

    • @Pieliker96_
      @Pieliker96_ 6 месяцев назад

      I originally wanted to get this thing to do a burnout but the weight distribution just wasn't having it. It's possible, but you'll need lots of ballast in the front and/or a big tire compound difference between the front and the rear. The 4x4 chassis may be more conducive weight-distribution-wise if you pull the driveshaft

      I'm keeping it relatively stock for now, don't have much need for long travel since it gets driven on the street most of the time. During the initial planning for the build I was considering a solid rear axle conversion chassis but decided against it for parts availability / cost / durability reasons - may still be cool to do, but it works just fine as is

    Just one thing. Your flaps are not accurate. The ailerons droop along with the flaps the first 10 or 12°. At which point they stop and the flaps continue down. I know I've flown them.

    • @Pieliker96_
      @Pieliker96_ 10 месяцев назад

      Cool to have a Caribou pilot reply! I think I should be able to adjust it in programming if I hook my ailerons back up to the mixer - I disabled the flap function for troubleshooting purposes and never re-enabled it. From what I can gather the flaps are full-span-ish with the aileron acting as the trailing flap element of the outboard section, and the leading flap element acting in conjunction with the other flaps. I'll have to see what I can do since I joined the two for simplicity's sake

      I was certainly fortunate that didn't end the flight. At the end, during landing, it looked like it had stopped fluttering and just diverged upwards, which is why I remarked I thought that canard servo was gone. Glad I got metal-gears all around.

    I think it is flying too much on the canards, which explains the unstable flight and penduling during turns - the main load seems to be in front of the delta wing. Balance.
