Handel: "Eternal Source of Light Devine" from Ode for the birthday of Queen Anne, HVW 74.

"The Ode calls for three voices and Orchestra, and contains this most exquisite Arioso featuring soprano and trumpet. Immediately we are plunged into a magical sphere where melody grows over slow harmonies, first in the voice and then answered by the trumpet. The two entwine in places, but Handel ensures that the singer is given all the space necessary for her symbolic utterances about "divine ...

    Wonderfully played, with enormous verve and accuracy. The suite, however is written with the inclusion of trumpets, timpani and oboes except the Air. The notes Bach wrote for these instruments are independent of the string parts and add the colour I'm sure Bach intended, so why leave them out?

    • @ww0yrr
      @ww0yrr 2 месяца назад

      All the right notes but the verve and splendor is absent. Leaving out the three trumpets and kettle drums is like preparing a banquet ~early without any spices or sugar. This ensemble could have properly played the 1st suite and would have won rave reviews. Reminds me of the Alice Springs Accordion Band playing Ravel's Bolero.

      @@herrickinman9303 I have a Lea pocket score of the four suites that come without explanatory notes. My score contains the full orchestration of all four suites, and have always known the third suite as being scored for trumpets, drums, oboes, strings and continuo. I have never seen any reference to an original version in all my seventy years as a musician. Just because the original version is for strings only doesn't make it the best. Authenticity in reproducing an original idea that then becomes something fuller is not always a good idea. It is like the popular performing edition of Handel's 'Messiah' compared to the rather bland versions based on the first London and Dublin performances.

    • @herrickinman9303
      @herrickinman9303 2 месяца назад

      @@user-xh4nq4vt5y Well, people of your generation want everything orchestrated, with 10 or 20 players to a part and trumpets, timpani and crashing cymbals. I much prefer this suite without trumpets and timpani. I've always found the trumpet and timpani annoying and unnecessary. The Netherlands Bach Society, under Lars Mortensen, also performs this suite without oboes, trumpets or timpani. In the last 50+ years, we've learned a lot about Bach's music and Baroque performance practice, thanks to musicological research. I'm surprised that in your 70 years as a musician, you're unaware that this suite was not conceived with trumpets and timpani in mind. The string parts, in J.S. Bach's, hand date from not later than 1731, while the oboe, trumpet and timpani parts, in C.P.E. Bach's hand, date from 1734 and 1738. (The technique for adding trumpet and timpani parts to a finished work was taught in the Bach household.) I suggest you listen to the Netherlands Bach Society's performance of BWV 1068 and also to "Mortensen on Orchestral Suite no. 3 in D major BWV 1068 | Netherlands Bach Society" -- both on You Tube.

    Beautiful music. A wonderful voice. This is somewhat unusual. I am delighted with Purcell. This is music little known to us: we all grew up on the Bach family and Viennese classics, and here is something unusual. I work as a cellist in the city opera theater of Lviv, in Ukraine. In our country, Purcell is known only in the circles of chamber music. I would really like to have one of his operas staged here.

    Max Riebl (Australian countertenor) died at the age of 30 (30 April 2022). The news comes four days after the singer took to Facebook to notify his fans that he has incurable cancer. He said, ” Hundreds of solo shows around the world. Orchestras, Operas, Renaissance ensembles, Evensong, cabaret and theatre. Spectacular venues. Thousands of hours of practice, radio interviews, photoshoots, extraordinary musicians. Hundreds of hours of travel, uncountable pieces learned and sung. Dozens of competitions. Thunderous applause. Silence and contemplation. Recording sessions. Sleepless nights. Hotel rooms. Loneliness. Laughter. After parties. Tension. Freedom. Bach, Monteverdi, Vivaldi and all things contemporary. Airports. Sacrifice. Sets, costumes, suits worn to a thread and stained with sweat. Difficult to quantify. Difficult to comprehend. An intense, unbearable and mesmeric series of experiences and memories. Some of the greatest and most honorable people I have known. You know who you are and I’ll never forget you.” He continued, “To those unaware, I have been diagnosed with an incurable cancer. The fight has been brutal and relentless and current symptoms make performing and touring impossible at this time. Nothing is set in stone, miracles happen, but for now, thank you for your support, your kindness and appreciation. May the music go on and may the musicians of Australia continue in their brave pursuits, against the odds. With Love. Max” (operawire com)
