This was SUPER helpful! I hope the producers I pitch to are as nice as him!
I know right? I wish all producers were as awesome as him.
I need a part 2 bad
Still love this movie
Thank you Ela! I have really enjoyed these conversations you've done with Nicholas Tabarrok... very helpful and motivating! 🙏
Filmmaking isn't so much about making art, is it? Is there too little need for self-expression?
Super duper real. Love the nube AND Polishing advice. Thank you
Yes, Ela! Thank you for sharing this with your community -- also having Nicholas to explain com.
What an amazing lesson. "You're planting seeds, not hunting.". Im working on the "why now" question right now. 🙃 Gotta be ready for that for sure. Thank you both for this teaching.
Ha ha! That inane question deserves an inane reply! 😂
"You're not a carnival barker." Hilarious! That's a great analogy. Thank you for this, fantastic presentation.
😂
Fun and useful interview with Nicholas. Thanks so much!
thank you!
A lot to chew on - all GOOD advice. Would love to meet one of these fellows in an elevator (more likely than a cocktail party!). THANKS! - Ela - for introducing Mr. Taborock (sp?) and is work.
Timely... I've got a proposal being looked at by a producer (it's an idea he pitched to me!) and am waiting to hear back from him. I'm getting my info together for his and my next conversation and, although it's based on a script of mine that he read and wanted me to rewrite it for him, I am approaching it like it's a pitch session. And, checking my email (to see if a bullwhip maker got back to me about my custom order--yeah, I got hobbies, what of it?), I see I got your email with the link to this video. Heck, I can take a break and watch!
:) Good luck!
Thanks, Ela for sharing this 🙌
I love your channel, thank you lots!!
Thanks for the useful information. Now I can apply this to my films
@05:23 I was laughing hysterically! Wonderful instructions. Thank you!
Best!
Helllooooooo!
I Ela. I loved your film, Tomorrow Ever After and I found this video really helpful. Thank you!

Brilliant!!
A big block a marble, you gotta make a shape. ☕️ challenge and being intimate. Love that. Thanks Stephen for all your insight. It was very informative. Thanks Ela!
Camera epileptic accident on the graveyard scene of Steel Magnolias where Sally is screaming and yelling and running away from the people. The scene was so intense that I was sure it was a little too much for me camera operator who had to go actr her and the whole thing went down horribly as a trendy way of filming (which was the nerve wracking Blair Witch
The most emotional and surprising moment in my entire movie history was a scene where Albert Finney was in a black and white horror film . It was the last scene that he was submerged in a tub with blood swirling around his head full of water. The mistake that the camera man made was being too close to his submerged head ,eyes wide and so violent, he laughed and water splattered on the lens . It felt like I was there in danger. He was in New Orleans at the time of Millers Crossing shooting and I was in a restaurant with a group that had been in the filming. I think it was serendipitous that he started talking to me and I had never seen that old movie and searched for it. He said that it was banned in most places but he said he was going to do that again and he did it in “Big Fish “
Ella, you are so generous. Thank you so much. Dealing with rejection is like learning to fall before you learn to ice skate. There is an art to handling a setback and picking yourself up by your suspenders and dusting yourself off for something better. Sending love. ❤❤❤
Thank you
So then every time I buy a director's cut I'm buying an invalid version of the film? It's like this, everyone has an opinion. If you have too many cooks in the kitchen you get something unrecognizable. Movies that are made for the masses are commercial and not artistic. If they're meant to please everyone then they'll be watered down, cookie cutter, typical.
I agree, mass produced films aren't interesting. You should definitely watch "Flora & Son", the film that Stephen O'Connell edited, for an example of an exquisitely fresh and beautiful film, if you're looking for a break from cookie cutters :)
Thank you both! Loved the take on cinema's reminiscence of sitting around the campfire telling stories. An ember glowed in my mind's eye from 30 years ago. A true and miraculous story was told round a campfire on a beach at night. And I wrote about it. I think it's a good time to relight that fire.
😂not packed _air port😮
Wow. This film was amazing. It made me laugh and cry, and touched me deeply. Thank you for sharing it. At the end it said, "To be continued"... I will look out for the sequel, and check out more of your work. It was absolutely beautiful. heartwarming, and heartbreaking. It is intelligent how you designed it to make people living in our time feel seen, heard, understood, loved, encouraged, and empathised with. Which in turn can bring out our kindness to others, self-empathy, understanding of ourselves and our situation, and look to a vision of a better plan and act in alignment with creating this. I only fully realised at the end what you had done. The innocence and tenderness that you embodied, the confusion, the way that 'crazy' people can be more open to truths but are sometimes more vulnerable to harm, how your loving nature is mistaken for weakness and stupidity, yet she shows great intelligence and adaptability, the way that you spark self-awareness in some other characters, how they begin to open up to what they realise they need and want. It was all just so incredibly beautiful and simultanerously heartwrenchingly sad... the innocence, fear, pain, isolation, the way that people don't even know how isolated they are. It touched the most tender place in my heart, the place where I store all of my love, loss, hopes and dreams... the softest, most vulnerable place. And at the end, I saw the meaning that you want us to take from it, and it is extremely effective. Also... Best robbery scene that I've seen. "You have to pay to live... ?" Wow... this just says so much. I feel that by creating a vision of a better plan, a better way of living, and combining this with such empathy, understanding, and recognition of the hardships of society, it bridges the gap between these two ways of living, and makes it feel more possible for us to see the way forward and act on it.
@angelkaterose thank you so much! Makes my heart go pitter patter when someone sees in the film exactly what I was going for. Thank you for sharing that with me ❤
@@elathier Thanks for your kind words, Ela. I feel that this film is a candle lighting other candles, and each of these in turn lighting many more, and on and on. It's one of my favourite films ever and I'm recommending it to everyone. I'm so glad that I found your work! Thanks again. ❤
❤Thank you Ela Thier..., and Mr. Bill.. Horberg !for your appreciated time. What a true blessings. Great teaching..🤗 Humbling beginnings.
Can I get the replay for the training classes?
Ela, could you please address this question in an upcoming video: What are considered the top screenwriting contests in terms of exposure for the work and the quality of feedback?
Great advice, Ela! Consistently great. When I hear characters speaking in monologues, I think of Aaron Sorkin. He pulls it off. Others not so much. I'm glad I signed up for your course.
I always have this problem coming up with a great opening.
Thank you Ela. I have a question. How do you write de set at any location. Example. Int. Ela´s house. Bedroom - day. Something like this. How is the correct form
@sojusapinos1 check out my (10min) video on screenplay format. I explain it there: ruclips.net/video/0hqvbKZPn68/видео.htmlsi=9m0HszqI5QfdMXKG Happy writing!
Thank you Ela! I'm a novelist looking to turn one of my books into a script. I've taken half a dozen classes and webinars, and read script writing books where they talk about plot, characters, story, etc. The one thing I've been searching for is exactly THIS!! ⬆ Since I've not been to film school, I've been struggling to fully understand formatting and how to use it. You provide and excellent concise message here.
Bon Soir. Which would have been mon vrai vie/ real life at 18. I'm decades beyond such actions.
This series was excellent.
I've never been so amused to have my bad habits so personally attacked.
😂
Int. Ferdinand's apartment - Day Ferdinand watches a RUclips video, absent-mindedly vaping.
I learned so much. Thank you.
Great video! Thanks so much Ela!
Terrific video, thank you!
Hi Ela!! You're a great angry teacher😅. THANK YOU❤
😂
This is exactly what I wanted to know how to do and why! Ela, you're the best.
Unbelievable! I took a screenwriting class in school that focused more on characters and dialogue. I feel like I grown some wings! Talk about the missing link. And it's done so effortlessly at the speed of light...you think you're not keeping up, but you are absorbing it all. Effortlessly.
Thank you very much, Ela. I love your presentation, you take me to my first step to learn proper formating, thanks
Yup, these are great and the same things that DRIVE ME NUTS when reading scripts that friends send me to. I hate when most of my comments are on formatting and not the story! You hit the big ones right on the head! a few others that make me crazy are the overuse of "CONTINUOUS" at the end of a slug, (when most of the time it's actually NOT continuous.) Or LATER (bc well, duh)
yeah when is "continuous" supposed to be used? I'm unclear on that! thanks for bringing it up!
@@singdancing8 a good example is when you're moving to a new location but the conversation/scene doesn't end yet. Like when 2 people are INT. CAFE - DAY and they leave the cafe but are still in the same scene so you need a new slug EXT. CAFE - DAY - CONTINUOUS. A short action line bc you can't start dialogue without it:)
what exactly is a spec script? every time I think I know I hear someone use it in a way that sounds different.
Jess, it can mean two different things. One definition is that it's a script you've not been paid to write. You write it in your own time for no money, with the hope that you'll be able to either sell or produce it. A second definition within TV world is that it's an episode you write for an existing show, without being paid or assigned to write it. You're simply writing an episode to demonstrate your writing skills, and specifically the skill of being able to write a compelling story even within the constraints of writing for existing characters and worlds, consistently with the style of the particular show that you chose to write a spec for. In short: Whether you're writing something you plan to produce yourself, or something you'll try to sell, or simply as a writing sample - it's a script you took to write on your own without someone hiring you to write it. Hope that makes sense!
Your videos are succinct and clear and applicable. thank you
