WS Podcast EP. 92 - Hidden Gems ~ Ouachita Mountains
Welcome Back to Wayward Stories!
It’s been a long six week hiatus, but we’re back! Life has been crazy and I’ve been running like a maniac trying to keep things on track, but excuses aside it’s time for a new episode. This week we’re going to talk about some truly hidden gems…since modern travel writers don’t seem to know what the term “hidden” actually means. We’re going to explore the Ouachita Mountains…the Ozarks much less known little sister.
Listen in now to hear all about it!

Hiking the Gilbert RailTrail - Buffalo National River
Просмотров 1173 месяца назад
This is an experiential video of my afternoon hike down the Gilbert RailTrail, a 4-mile round trip hike down the abandoned grade of the Missouri & North Arkansas Railroad along the beautiful Buffalo National River. There are several extant remnants of the railroad that halted operations in the late 1940’s, including stacked stone culverts built in 1901-2 and the enormous, monolithic bridge pier...

Welcome Back to Wayward Stories! This week…well, we all know what happened this week. It was the much anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse, and it scurried its way right over my head in this great state of Arkansas. This week’s episode details my adventure to find a wilderness setting in which to experience and capture it. This experience truly moved me, and I think it’s evident in tonight’s sh...

This video is a little long by my experiential vid standards, but the event…and the human experience it captures…warrants it. Timelapse of totality over the beautiful valley below my vista perch at the very end.

WS Podcast EP. 88 ~ Arkansas Backcountry Byways
Просмотров 233 месяца назад
Welcome back to Wayward Stories! A little sidetrack adventure a few weeks ago inspired an idea within me…more of a question really, at first. Why doesn’t Arkansas, with all of our glorious forestry roads and backcountry trails, have designated backcountry byways? A short fact-check indeed confirmed we have none so designated, so your ever-benevolent host (mòi) decided to designate a few of my f...

Greetings !!! Had me think'n about check'n on you as well. Good to hear ya back online.
Wayward Stories, a hidden gem 💎 which I am thankful to have found
@CMDoreOTR awww. Thanks 😊😁😁
Yes, you are correct, you review was one of the best as you took it out. Thanks for that
blisters I still follow standard protocol. Cover with let's Jam extra hold, pour over isopropyl alc. 91% and lightly wipe VOILA. Blue gel scab that left on dissolves into it painLESSly. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS carry some let's jam extra hold and iso. alc. 91% :) patriot
I destroyed my ankle in a motorcycle accident and fixed it using barefoot shoes. Get into barefoot shoes and you'll never have ankle issues again. The huge platform created my those massive soles is the reason people twist their ankles. I know only wear sandals and low tops in warm weather.
Two years later and the price doubled
Whats the average depth of the river below the dam? Do the guys with power boats use jet drive motors?
I was in Job Corp back in the 90s and we used to hike ALL over that area.
You only used 1 bag?
Me and my Brother were just up there recently(5-24-24) it's been about 15 years since the last time, Him and I were up there, exploring the old mining town of Kelly, NM😎
Heck yea I want to go back someday myself with more time. I’d like to explore more around the area for other shafts and ruins that are supposed to be in the area.
Spot on with "most comfortable" I do have those boots but never trusted them in water. However ; I have found the sole style on boot in the video are not lasting ; especially the Keen ''Men's Targhee III Oxford Low Hiking Shoes Dark Earth Mulch'' are the most comfortable shoes I have worn in many years for my rather board feet; BUT SADLY; the soles do not last (12 months) even if not used on stony/rocky/hill country and I'm very close to 71 years --- most dog walking and photography plus some bitumen/concrete . I'm on my second pair in something like 2 years! Keen Australia have actually sent me a "good will" pair I would love hear your thoughts on how long the soles actually last
Sir thanks you
OMG your cold opens kill me 🤣
Great concept, and you pulled it off beautifully
Thank you so much! How have you been?
Rockin' a 4.0 myself! Hit up the Bufflehead Bay Trail a few weekends back. Found my first snakeskin!
the intermediate and bivy kept me warm at -14° F in Korea I slept all night. I had on a bunch of warming layers though!
Choctaw brother checking in.. Just Sub’d.
Welcome aboard my friend
Ah Texas hill country!
Square cement box looks like a cistern for water for the trains.
Man, if I had a river rat tube to float that!👍🏻
I’m gonna hike some trails at white rock eventually within a few weeks
Such a beautiful scenery my friend! This looks amazing! Absolutely amazing!
Inspiring podcast. It took me back to watching the eclipse fron the overlook of the little Grand Canyon just south of Jasper AR. It started out with about 5 cars that swelled to over 50. Everyone was feeling the spirituality of the event. Everyone was respectful and we made new friends as well. Thank you for documenting your experience with such feelings. I will come back to listen to this podcast when I need a lift.
Thank you so much Cindy! Sincerely I appreciate your words. And I’m glad you got to experience it as well! Truly an incredible experience
Ineffability - image what more God can share with those who love Him

Took backroads in the Ouachita National Forest (east of Highway 7) and was grieving from the extensive clear cutting. Driving became challenging because a given google map route would be blocked by the locked heavy-duty metal gates.
Yes there is a lot of that. The specific routes I mentioned are open county roads though as of the time of this recording
Gen 1 was not a Vietnam bag,
Thats why you need the bivy
Perfect!
Why thank you!
Hi sir your content is very nice and interesting. I like it very much. But one thing makes me feel very sad that you are regularly uploading videos with so much effort but your content does not have enough views, likes, comments. That is because your channel has several problems in your channel due to which the right audience is not coming to your channel. If you want I can work for your channel for free for 2-3 days on test basis.
Tried to share links to videos but RUclips deletes such.
Maybe you could collaborate with Josh Cantu and turn a visit to Bend, Oregon into a business trip.

Gonna make a total solar eclipse 2024 video ???
Hope your ankle recovered along these 3 years. You should know your content is still helping others to choose a decent pair of hiking boots. I've been looking for the European ones, suffering with width. Now, I am in US for a few weeks, and had the opportunity to buy a pair of Targhee 3 for myself. Waiting for it to come, right after returning a La Sportiva Raptor II for running small and narrow toed.
Well thank you! It has gotten a lot stronger. Still aches at night when I go to sleep. Probably something I’ll carry the rest of my life lol. I appreciate your words! And I’m also happy this review helped you out! I hope you get a good solid pair. Mine lasted til just recently, and they’re still in good enough shape I wear them on archeological digs and other field work type of assignments. Enjoy your adventures and safe travels my friend!
Hi sir, I checked your RUclips channel and found your content is very nice and you are uploading content regularly. But not getting any views on the video. Your channel does not have enough subscribers. Most of them I think are fake. Your channel has several problems due to which proper audience is not coming to your channel. So improve your channel, then you can earn good income from your channel. If any help please say I will try my best.
Very informative 👏 Thanks.
very nice
very nice
Where is War Eagle Creek located? Nice review!
Thank you my friend, I appreciate your kind words! War Eagle Creek is located in Northwest Arkansas, and the closest locale you could google and get good info and some idea for orienting yourself would be Eureka Springs. Great smallmouth fishing, beautiful scenery and smaller crowds than our more popular rivers. Ozark Adventure and Recreation (OAR) is a couple of great folks that have a small campground and handle outfitting on the creek. If you scroll back into my videos you’ll find a video from that day that is an experiential video from that days trip.
@@WaywardStories I thought so. Just wanted to confirm. It was odd to look up a review on a cooler for my kayak and find a fellow Arkansan. I’m over in Springdale. I will check that all out this summer. And you have me convinced an Icemule is worth the money so thanks again!
I usually use the intermediate bag down to zero degrees comfortably. I hammock camp most of the year definitely need an under quilt or sleeping pad to keep air from coming through the hammock
You know that you are NOT a true descendant of the Choctaw tribe. Your people are all invaders who replaced the true indigenous copper toned people. Your history and so called lineage is a LIE. No disrespect to you but my heart hurts from the lies and paper genocide of the true inhabitants of this land. If you want to live in truth than start living the lies. Yall stole our lineage and identity but we are taking it back!!!
Nice. I had a similar experience working in Philadelphia, MS. I'm part of a band of Choctaws but am very European looking... I attempted to visit the cave, but didn't press further beyond that gate. The next day, I asked some of locals with whom I was working, and they said that there was a murder that took place there a few months prior, and they had closed it off to outsiders since. This was about 5 years ago (a Google Maps notification popped up on my phone today to remind me it had been 5 years.). Thanks for the video! Well done!
Well thank you my friend. Thanks for watching and commenting! Yea I really wanted to see the cave as well, but it just wasn’t in the cards. It’s a very cool site, the mound. I remember my little adventure fondly
Ice retention rating is based on the cooler being full. The air gap in your test greatly impacted your results.
What is the name of the park?
Its name when it was a National Park was Platt National Park, it is now Chickasaw National Wildlife Refuge
amazing
F it. I'm in. Subbed. Born and raised in the Ozarks.
Been wanting to do this for 30 years but never got to. This year without fail.
You Must! It’s an awesome experience
🙏🏼🪶💜 thank you for sharing
Thank you for watching and commenting!
