My articles on film and culture have been published in The Atlantic and The Huffington Post. In addition to being a writer, I'm also a filmmaker. I acted in and produced the epic WWII women-led sci-fi short film UFO Diary. UFO Diary has VFX by artists from ILM & Weta Digital and was featured in American Cinematographer magazine. You can see UFO Diary on Vimeo at the link below. I'm married to Jason Apuzzo, a filmmaker and writer and I have a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Yale University.

Book Review: The Marble Faun by Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Marble Faun (1860) by Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most fascinating works of classic 19th century American literature. In this book review, I discuss the major themes in Hawthorne's novel and some of the history and culture that informs his story. Hawthorne wrote The Marble Faun after spending a year and a half in Italy in the late 1850s. He was especially inspired by a famous statue of a marble faun that he saw in the Capitoline Museums in Rome. This enigmatic statue, also known as the Resting Satyr, is the best-known ancient Roman copy of a much older, 4th century BC statue by the renowned Greek sculptor Praxiteles.

BOOK REVIEW: Patrick Leigh Fermor's epic travel memoir A Time of Gifts

One of the most extraordinary travel books I've read is “A Time of Gifts” by Patrick Leigh Fermor, an epic account of his journey on foot across Europe in the 1930s. Setting off from Holland on a cold night in December 1932, the impoverished 18-year old Fermor plans to sleep in barns and fields along the way. Fortunately, kind strangers - from humble farmers to elegant barons - take him in, giv...
