As of right now, Lytle creek and big bear trails are closed due to the fires last month. I was told the closures expire Nov 1st. but the forrest service may extend it. i'll keep you posted.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Subaru make it to the end of the trail. It gets pretty rutted and rocky in parts. I’d recommend rock sliders and skid plates. Having said that, who knows how the trail will be after the fire.

the trail ends about 100 yards from where i stopped. I stopped cause the trail was getting too narrow and i didn't want any scratches.

While it might be rare. I got stuck up there while they were doing a 5 hour recovery so about 12 rigs had to go the other way. One kid in front of me almost slid off the mountain because there was still some snow up there and he was in a 2wd. 19 miles the other way through the mountains if it happens.

Hi Jim, Coldwater Canyon 3N06 is pretty rutted out but you don't need lockers. You just need to pick the right line and you'll be good. If you can disconnect your sway bar that will help you out a lot with traction when you flex. If it all fails, you can always use your winch. The trail has plenty of trees.

you don't need a permit if you're just off roading. You only need an adventure pass if you're going to overnight camp. The main trailhead is right next to the Lytle Creek Firing Line (Shooting Range) 1905 Lytle Creek RD, 92358
