Go back with a standard compass and an em meter. Electromagnetics can effect both. You could have encountered a magnetic anomoly because of a fault line with magnetized basalt. In the olympic mountains near me, there are three places like that, and they do the same thing.

The very amateur scientist in me would love accompaning you, to take various readings and collect some geological & water samples. Record air samples, barometric readings, etc. Of course I would record all readings on video & audio and transfer to hard copies later. Wouldn't wanna bore the crap out of you.
