      Absolutely! If you speak the names of the graphics (ex. rabbit, chick, chick, chick) to a steady beat, their syllables match up with quarter and eighth note patterns. So the one I listed here would be 2 eighth notes, quarter, quarter, quarter; or ti-ti, ta, ta, ta.

    Thank you so much for this incredibly helpful lesson for teachers! I will be starting my first year teaching music in two weeks and I'm so excited! I've taught Kindergarten and first grade for many years and I'm feeling comfortable with those ages, as far as lesson planning. But, I've been concerned about engaging lessons for the older grades. This has me excited and all of your tips about presenting clear expectations and especially how to transition from demonstrating to slowly including students is brilliant. Thank you! Looking forward to checking out your TpT store, too!

    I will admit I need a lot of help. This is my 2nd year teaching music and last year trying boom whackers was awful. The kids were hitting each other with them, and half of them couldnt or didnt care to understand the directions. I went over every rule in detail and made sure they all understood. Yet half the class couldnt do simple call and response. I stopped using them because the kids were so wild. I also have half the class as ese studets so this makes everything more difficult. 😢

    • @adifferentmusician
      @adifferentmusician 2 месяца назад

      That is very frustrating. I'm sorry that happened. I wish there were a magic formula- there are times when I feel like could really use it! My guideline is if kids can't follow my instructions and expectations, they do not use the materials. Something I had to employ a lot this year was demonstrating a concept, then inviting students up to join me in demonstrating. Not everyone was invited up. Those that were, I praised for their behavior and good choices. It's not a good feeling, though, when you've done all your prep and planning and it just doesn't work. Even when you're doing everything right. Sometimes we get thrown curve balls and need a beat to stop and think of how to respond. And often, there is no time to do that.

  • @RP-vy8st

    The xlyphones in my room dont have colored keys, how would you change that center to accommodate that?

    • @adifferentmusician
      @adifferentmusician 2 месяца назад

      I would rely on the note names (letters) on the keys then have students use a 4-circle template and write one letter in each circle. Or, you can label the keys with different colored painters tape. Maybe just in a small range, like a fifth, to keep it simpler.

  • @RP-vy8st
    @RP-vy8st 2 месяца назад

    Do you do centers every week? This sounds like a lot of afterschool work to prep centers for every grade

    • @adifferentmusician
      @adifferentmusician 2 месяца назад

      I don't do them every week. You're right, that would be a lot. I do centers maybe every 8-9 weeks (for a full class period). But I'd like to incorporate them more often for less time to practice what we've learned in that specific class period. For example, when we learn ta and ti-ti, I'd like to have kids rotate between 3-4 centers for 2-3 minutes each during the first few days as we practice.

    Great questions to ponder! And it’s interesting to think of the ever-growing movement to question the origins of traditional art, especially if it has racist origins or takes part in some kind of colonization or appropriation. “This Land Is Your Land” comes to mind.

    • @adifferentmusician
      @adifferentmusician Год назад

      Absolutely- so much to think about. As someone who chooses repertoire, it's becoming more uncomfortable to teach some traditional songs. And if a student were to question what they mean, I would feel the need to answer honestly. That usually informs my musical choices. I'll also say that it's harder to sing patriotic songs this year when I know what is happening all over America right now.
