Old, unhappy, far-off things, & battles long ago.
Glenn Gould's U.S. Television Debut: Bernstein Conducting Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor
Performing the first movement of Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052, with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic. Gould's performance begins at 18:03.
Originally aired on January 31, 1960 on CBS Television as part of its Ford Presents series, this program was entitled "The Creative Performer." The entire show is actually three performances - by Gould, the soprano Eileen Farrell (singing the "Suicidio!" aria from *La Gioconda*), & Igor Stravinsky (conducting the last three scenes of his ballet *The Firebird*) - punctuated with scintillating musicological lectures by Maestro-Professor Bernstein, who is arguably the star of the show.

I ripped this straight from the only existing videotape copy of this astonishing and historically crucial interview. It needs to be shared with the world, not only those with high-end WorldCat accounts. Let the chips fall where they may. This interview took place on October 8, 1970. Glenn Gould: Concert Dropout (1968) 6/6

I stumbled upon this astonishing 1968 conversation between Glenn Gould and John McClure about ten years ago at the Village Discount thrift store here in Chicago (the one on Clark north of Lawrence). "Why the hell am I leafing through this stack of LPs?" I would've thought, if my thoughts came in annoyingly self-reflective & grammatically correct sentences. "It's the same shit every time I come ...

At Home with Glenn Gould (1959) 8/9

A stunningly intimate conversation between a world-weary Glenn Gould and the CBC's Vincent Tovell, conducted on 4 December 1959, two years after Gould's triumphant tour of the Soviet Union, five years prior to his final concert. Who do we have to thank for this treasure? A native Torontonian, fellow Gouldian RUclipsr who answered my call for the full version of Glenn Gould's Toronto and who thr...

Grew up in North York, right near the streets he was driving around. It was a good place to grow up in those days.

I remember sitting with my parents watching at fourteen & being enthralled by Glenn Gould's incredible dexterity & interpretation of Bach. His seated position & fingering, far different from my Toronto Conservatory piano instructor. The other fascinating part of maestro Bernstein' s program was Igor Stravinski's The Firebird suite. I was already a fan of his later work, The Rite of Spring, and seeing him conduct his own interpretation of Firebird was exhilarating. How wonderful that the girl of 14 is able to revisit this memorable program as a 77 yr old.
Thank you for posting!
El vídeo demuestra filosóficamente y empíricamente que no existe un solo Dios... porque en el mismo, aparecen varios!
I think this may be the only deep footage available of John Berryman. It should not be understated the cultural significance of these videos. Listen, he's piss drunk smoking like a chimney and not breathing in and out enough so his O levels are depleted and when he turns to the right he begins coughing. The flem in his lungs must have dropped suddenly and he began coughing to lift the flem off the bottom of his lungs. He's doomed by his own mind. But here it is: John Berryman.
He is genius, clearly
Thanks so much for this!

This TV shows clearly beats The Kardashians...... We are going down the drain
What a TV show! I was expecting Bach to show Up at the end.
A NOTA NEGATIVA, SOBRE A SINFONIA No. 3 "EROICA" DE BEETHOVEN, É QUE NO SEGUNDO TEMA NO INÍCIO DESTA SINFONIA, EXISTE UM PLÁGIO QUE BEETHOVEN COPIOU DA ABERTURA DA ÓPERA "LÚCIO SILA" DE MOZART. BEETHOVEN, NATURALMENTE, UTILIZOU A ORQUESTRA EM UNÍSSONO NA APRESENTAÇÃO DESTE TEMA QUE QUE É PREPONDERANTE DURANTE TODO O PRIMEIRO MOVIMENTO. ISSO PROVA QUE BEETHOVEN ESTUDAVA E COPIAVA IDÉIAS MUSICAIS DE MOZART. ESSE PLÁGIO FICOU BONITO, MAS É LAMENTÁVEL PARA QUEM CONHECE A REFERIDA ABERTURA DA ÓPERA "LÚCIO SILA" DE MOZART.
You can love or dislike Gould's take on things, but in hindsight anything that keeps this music alive for the current generation should be welcomed. Certainly even the biggest Gould detractor would prefer Gould's recordings be popular than none at all.
The greatest interpretion of Bach.❤

bernstein seemed unable to grasp that bach's keyboard works were composed for the HARPSICHORD, which has little to no dynamic range. the piano, much less the modern piano, did not exist in Bach's time.
I wondered the same thing at first, but now I wonder if he's looking at the orchestral score, which would include dynamic indications.
Magnificent, We are so lucky to see this today.
The city may change but the ferries @ 1:40 never will
Glenn Gould's Bach is unreachable
Notice that Mr Gould never seems to look at the conductor’s instructions ( the wand ). How can he be so accurate in the tempo ? I used to walk by Mr Gould’s apartment building on my way to school RS. Canada
Absolutely fabulous !!
Wonderful use of the Internet RS. Canada
Great Bill Bell is at his seat!!
C'è tutta la Sassonia di Bach in questo brano, spettacolo!!!
@18:03 The blah blah finally ends.
There was an era in which the TV broadcast was actually educational and was worth watching.
I want more passion and more brio to go with the crystalline intellect that is Bach. This is a little too cerebral for the ‘volcano’ that Casals called Bach.
in an odd way, he was also a beatnick, like kerouac and ginsberg and the whole gang
A wonderful bygone belle epoch
I don’t like Bernstein terming the performance instinct as a demon. Unless, that is, you subscribe to genius musicians the quality of Lucifer- the musical angel that fell out of favor of God. Bach didn’t view music makers in this light. He said the aim of all music ought to be done to the glory of God.
Mr.bernstein is more interested in his hairdo.he knows more about beethoven than beethoven himself. He is the boss. Gould knew this
Glenn was so beautiful here!
07.07.2024 восхитительно волшебно проговаривая каждый звук. Глен Гульд- великий пианист. Спасибо всем кто хранит такие бесценные записи.
It's like everone in the orchestra and the conducter know they are in a special moment in history bringing genious composer into life at that very moment. An historic moment.
The discussion after the most-watched part of it is very interesting.
So, we have the greatest pianist who ever lived here, but ya'll insist on playing this revolting disco music throughout?
1:54 That SAM store... that was a record shop, right?
Television is great for some things
