    This is the 2nd full year with my miscanthus "little zebra" it was suppose to be dwarf. I am happy its not, but it got huge and very floppy this year. Its opening up in the center allowing sun to get through and bindweed is starting to weasel its way through and trying to spiral-up around the stalks, furthur pulling them down. Im afraid of snakes, but i got beneath it anyway 3 times this summer so far and pulled the bindweed and fluffed it back up (without snake encounter thank God). Should i cut the outer stalks (that are flopped to the ground) off? Is it because Little Zebra or certain grasses are notorious for flopping, or the sequence of extensive dry spells then heavy-pounding rain-bombs this summer, or something (feeding, pruning, etc) i should be doing? I never would think its already time to start dividing it. I worry about getting older what kind of trouble i will be in for planting these but i needed quick growing attractive barriers that can take anything nature or man can throw at it. AND INDEEDit was, esp in winter backlit w the streetlight 🤩. But its losing the beauty & barrier advantages. Do you have any tips or tricks? 🌱 Note: I can't do the fire thing bc it closely borders the neighbors house.

    • @upatgrassybottom9859
      @upatgrassybottom9859 11 дней назад

      Hi, firstly are you sure it's little zebra? This one only reaches around 5foot. The rain will definitely cause problems, but it should be fine once dry, miscanthus zebrinus is notorious for flopping. Have you been feeding it ? This can cause a fast, floppy growth and never burn any grass back . Just cut it back to the ground around February (uk). Are you in the uk?

    I don't want to use wet cement so I am interested in your dry screed option. How deep should the screed be? Should it be compacted before laying the tiles? Any tips on levelling? I assume the cement/sand mix hardens over a period of time so do I have to wait before laying the tiles?

    • @upatgrassybottom9859
      @upatgrassybottom9859 16 дней назад

      Lay the screed approximately 4 inches deep, put down enough screed to do a couple of rows at a time, only compact it gently with a spirit level, lay the tile on in rows using the spirit to make sure it's level, use a rubber mallet to get level, lay the tile immediately don't wait, the screed will set hard over the coming days, avoid walking on it for a couple of days. Hope that helps.

      @@upatgrassybottom9859 Thank you for your quick response. Any particular reason why I should only lay sufficient screed for a couple of rows at a time? • @upatgrassybottom9859
      @upatgrassybottom9859 15 дней назад

      @Peter-r2s I actually did four rows at a time, the reason is you work backwards to avoid treading on the tiles or bricks and you need to be able to reach to lay them , the screed needs mixing dry so don't add water.

It came to me at about 7ft and is already 9/10 ft tall. Although it's staked at the base I still panic in high storms as it bends backwards and forwards and Although I'd love it at a decent size, it frightens me as its less than 20ft away from the house and about 5ft from next doors fence. Betula Trinity College is small to medium. Early pruning will greatly help, and don't be afraid to remove larger branches at a young age. If you're in the uk, it's better to do this once the leaves are on so late spring. Look up pictures of your preferred shape and use it as a rough guide. Make sure it's anchored in until its roots settle, they are shallow rooted so shouldn't cause a problem to your property, make sure it is well watered in its first couple of years , don't overwater it either. If you check out some of my videos, I explain how to prune without compromising the overall shape. Hope this helps...

      Hello Davena, the sap will have stopped rising once the leaves are fully formed, you can remove the leader, your tree will use another main branch as a leader but you can cut this down by a third, keep checking it every month or so and keep trimming in any that may become the next leader. • @upatgrassybottom9859
      @upatgrassybottom9859 Месяц назад

      Hi , there are lots of things to affect the grass, and wind will damage some of them. The grass goes through different looks as the year turns. They are prone to rust on the leaves in damp environments. The seed heads go through different phases but eventually turn to a straw colour, at which point the leaves will fall away, leaving a stiffly upright look to the clump, any breaks should be removed, there should be plenty of stalks so it should look better, each season gives a different look, this is what gives this superb grass a long season of interest, my calamagrostis is tidied up when needed, please don't be put off by its look as it sounds like your planting is relatively new, it needs time to mature, I'll do a filmed explanation in my next video to help you out.
