Stravinsky Pulcinella Suite for 2 flutes and piano - COLOURS
Antique textures with little dabs of neon: one tends to think of Igor Stravinsky as modern and dissonant, but here he borrows from18th century Italian composer, Pergolesi, (1710-1736). An additional flute (Judy Dines!) adds brilliance and bustle to the seven baroque-themed movements of the suite.

Happy New Year 2022 to you! I made this at the end of 2020, when it seemed appropriate to give the year a little PUSH off the cliff...This has nothing to do with flute playing, but it features a snippet of original music, also composed in 2020.
The New Daily: Simple 3rds

Here's a technical exercise that would make a good warm-up. In the video I suggest singing the starting notes of each pair of notes (the starting note of each 3rd) using Solfege syllables. Or, you could say the scale degrees ("1,2,3"...). Or name the pitches using their specific letter names. (I call this Say-And-Play). The pattern is simple and silly, but provides a good technical workout, wit...
New Daily Exercise "A La Rachmaninoff"

A warm up exercise for high register articulation and chromatic patterns. I demonstrate how to "stop the air with tongue/end notes with the tongue as a way to keep the air speed consistent throughout the passage and keep the groupings crisp and neat. This will become part of a daily exercise book that I am creating.

Wow! Wonderful Aralee and Corin! Happy Anniversary!
Always a pleasure to hear your music
Colours is a very apt title, so many subtle hues in here.
I just found you through the Make Weird Music interview. Great stuff. You will now be part of my playlist for evening walks 🙂
Wow! Thanks!!!
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!! You played this sonata beautifully. I love your sound. What brand flute are you playing? Just brilliant. 🎉
Thanks much!!! I'm playing a silver Powell .014 wall Flute built in 1983 with a silver Drelinger headjoint made in 1989
Very beautiful!
Nice! I think my dad also recorded a version of this with Frank Martin on piano.
Yes!
Why straight angles? There is a reason no wind or brass instrument has 90° angles in the tubing. Interesting concept, but not being a curved tubing in headjoint shows it is still in prototype phase. The recording sounds nice, but would probably sound better with better air flow.
The reason for the late Sandy Drelinger's design, using the mitre* joints, is as follows. Flute headjoints have a parabolic curve (vs. being cylindrical) .Using the angled joint preserves this parabolic curve, whereas curving the tubing would change all the dimensions. Doing it this way makes this headjoint equal in size and curvature to a conventional straight headjoint, virtually the same accoustically. Although it looks weird, the "angles" don't created unwanted turbulence -- at least not at the airspeed of flute playing. If it were a pipe filled with fast flowing water, it might have an impact. It's not a prototype, but rather, hand built, and true, not many were made . Sadly, the inventor, my friend Sandy, passed away in 2021.
@@araleeflute thanks for the info on the design. As I said, it sounds good, but the mitre joints seem strange. I have seen 2 other flute headjoint designs that are curved and not mitred, but not sure of the parabolic nature of them. Regardless, I appreciate the information and the innovative approach to design.

Thank you!!!
Your flute tone is so mesmerizing and hauntingly beautiful…I literally teared up with the emotions conveyed from this excerpt. Thanks for posting this!

Hi Connie, Aralee here, sitting with Colin. He is thrilled to hear from you!
🤍... lovely, Aralee!
...And the final flower... just adorable! 🌺
bravo
Thank you for sharing this video!! Please how can I buy the headjoint to play vertical? Excuse my English.
I'm sorry to say that the headjoint maker, Mr. Sandy Drelinger, passed away, so there are no more of these being made currently. There may be some other makers who have a similar design, but I have not tried any of them. I'm glad you liked the video.
@@araleeflute What a bad news. Excuse me. I'll search it by another way. Thank you
Wonderfully done. I am a huge admirer of Thea Musgrave.
Thank you Robert!!!!
Go back to the Rubank books and learn about the fundamentals of music.
What a brilliant contribution to music. Floutists can now avoid many of the injuries sometimes resulting from incorrect practice positioning. Arily you're playing as beautiful as always. I don't know if you remember me, so many years ago at the Portland dojo. I am so sorry for the passing of your father as he was such a wonderful man and contributed so much to the world of music as you have. Thank you for your music!

Thanks for all the marvelous comments! It's very gratifying to know someone likes this music! Doing this project with Markus has been a musical highlight for me. What a brilliant flutist she is my god what tone!
Thank you so much, Ron!
The only thing missing, dear, is a simple basic explanation that flute-vibrato is created by gently pulsing the airstream using the throat, as you clearly do. Not by rolling in/out, and not by pulsing the abdominal muscles, and it's not necessary for long detailed explanations and drawings, really. We have little beginners with less than a year experience starting nice vibratos just by practicing the "hissing" exercise at varying speeds while placing a hand gently on their throat to feel the subtle activity there. Flute vibrato will then automatically encompass both variation in volume and pitch, without any extra effort. I have great respect for wonderful advanced "legit" flutists like yourself--I'm just a "jazz-doubler" who's self-taught on flute. Fortunately as a performer and recording-artist I was able to learn proper vibrato for flute, sax, trumpet, and vocals by trial and error plus lots of observation and listening. Now mostly teaching, I have tons of frustrations with my own multi-wind-instrument playing as well as singing, but thankfully VIBRATO isn't one of them.
Good for you! Please don't call me "dear".
hola me gusta el sonido que sacas a la flauta
Thank you very much! Gracias!
So haunting! Markus' "smokescape" sets the tone for a tour-de-force from you! This video gives an up-close view of your absolute command of your instrument. The music is breathtaking as it is; seeing you playing it adds another dimension entirely. Thank you for all of this stunning music, Aralee!
Aralee and Markus seems an odd combination until you actually listen to the music. I find myself torn between just letting it relax me as a background and being compelled to see where it's going next. Speaking of "next", more recordings, please. (How did I not subscribe to this channel already?)
Thanks, Kevin, for writing this awesome comment! It makes me so happy! I have another video similar to this one, in progress--using the footage I got during recording. Hopefully you already saw the short Voyage of Blacwyd "trailer":ruclips.net/video/E1Q7P1GgCBQ/видео.html
